Spring Baby Pixie Bonnet

Embrace the spunky feel of spring with this adorable pixie bonnet. With three different size options and a flower embellishment, this project is the definition of “sweet.”

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 3-6 (6-12, 12-24) months to fit 17 (18, 19)” head circumference

Gauge: 16.4 sts and 6.8 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern stitch

Materials

Yarn:

Medium weight yarn Knit Picks Brava Worsted (100% Acrylic; 218 yards [199 meters]/100 grams): 25707 Peapod (MC), 1 ball; 26135 Cotton Candy (CC1), 1 ball; 25706 Canary (CC2), 1 ball

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Special Stitches (if needed)

V-stitch – (dc, ch 1, dc) in same st.

Double V-stitch – (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st.

Pattern

Ribbing

With MC, ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, turn – 6 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in blo of next 4 sts, sc in last st, turn – 6 sc.

Rows 3-60 (66, 72): Rep Row 2.

Turn and work 60 (66, 72) sc evenly across the side edge of Rows 1-60 (66, 72) – 60 (66, 72) sc.

Change to CC1.

Main Bonnet

Row 1: Ch 5 (count as dc and ch-2), sk the next 2 sts, V-stitch in st, *sk next 2 sts, V-stitch in next st; rep from * across to last 2 st, sk next st, dc in last st, turn – 19 (21, 23) V-sts.

Row 2: Ch 3, sk first 2 sts, Double V-stitch in ch-1 sp of V-stitch from previous row, *ch 1, sk the next V-stitch, Double V-stitch in ch-1 sp of next V-stitch; rep from * across to last dc of the last Double V-stitch, work the last dc of the last Double V-stitch leaving the last 2 loops on the hook, yo, insert hook into tch, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook, turn – 10 (12, 14) Double V-stitches.

Row 3: Ch 3, V-stitch in each ch-1 sp across, dc in tch, turn – 19 (21, 23) V-stitches.

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in first st, *ch 1, sk next V-stitch, Double V-stitch in ch-1 sp of next V-stitch; rep from * across last V-stitch, ch 1, sk V-stitch, 2 dc in tch, turn – 9 (11, 13) Double V-stitches.

Row 5: Rep Row 3.
Rows 6-13: Rep Rows 2-5 twice.

Row 14: Rep Row 2.

Size 3-6 months only

Fasten off, leave a 15” long tail for sewing.

Sizes 6-12 (12-24) months only

Rows 15-16: Rep Rows 3-4.

Fasten off, leave a 15” long tail for sewing.

Tie

With MC, work a ch 45 (47, 50)” long.

Fasten off.

Flower

Rnd 1: With MC, magic circle, ch 2 (count as 1 hdc), 5 hdc in circle, join to beg ch-2 with sl st.

Change to CC2.

Rnd 2: *(Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st) in next st, sl st in next st; rep from * 5 more times, join to beg ch-3 with sl st.

Fasten off, leave long tail for sewing.

Finishing

Fold work in half so that the first st of Row 14 (16, 16) meets the last st of Row 14 (16, 16). Using long tail and tapestry needle, whip stitch the two halves of Row 14 together to the corner. Fasten off.

Note: This is the point of the pixie bonnet.

Attach flower using long yarn tail and tapestry needle.

Weave the tie in between the V-stitches of Row 1 of the Bonnet.

Weave in all loose ends. yarn ball

    The pattern reads: Gauge: 16.4 sts and 6.8 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern stitch. How on earth does one do 16.4 sts and/or 6.8 rows??
