Lemon Zest Tote

This bright tote bag will be your perfect accessory this summer! Worked up in an easy single stitch pattern and featuring bamboo handles and a sewn-in lining, this bag is perfect for all levels of crocheters.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Length: Approx. 13.5” (34 cm) not including handles; Width: Approx. 14” (36 cm)

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4” over single crochet

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Rico Creative Cotton (100% cotton; 93 yards [85 meters]/50 grams): #80 White (A, 4 skeins), #37 Sky Blue (B, 2 skeins), #63 Light Yellow (C, 1 skein)
Yarn: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, 2 bamboo handles medium, bag lining

Pattern

Using Yarn A, ch 41.
Rnd 1: Starting from 2nd ch, sc in each across, turn and sc in opposite side of ch, sl st to 1st st. (80 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, inc in next 2 sts, sc across 38 sts, inc in next 2 sts, sc across next 38 sts, sl st to 1st st. (84 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, inc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st, sc across next 38 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st, sc across next 38 sts, sl st to 1st st. (88 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, inc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st, sc across next 38 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st, sc across next 38 sts, sl st to 1st st. (92 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, inc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, inc in next st, sc across next 38 sts, inc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, inc in next st, sc across next 38 sts, sl st to 1st st. (96 sts)

Work in single crochet until piece measures 3.5” (9 cm) from beginning. Change to B in last sc of last round.

The next part is worked in stripes. Work all the following instructions, keeping track of the round you are on and changing color as indicated in the following Stripe Sequence:
6 Rounds with B
2 Rounds with C
7 Rounds with B
3 Rounds with C
8 Rounds with B
4 Rounds with C
9 Rounds with B

Change to A in last sc of last round.

Work 12 Rounds with A. Change to B to work scallop edging.

Scallop Edging

Ch 1, sc in 1st st,*sk next 2 sts, shell in next st, sk next st, sc in next st*, repeat from * to * around. (21 shells, 21 sc)
Fasten off B.

Handle Tab (Make Two)

With C ch 7.
Row 1: Working in back bar of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1 turn; sc in each st across.
Rows 3-15: Repeat Row 2.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

Mark center front and back of Bag. Position one handle evenly over center mark (in middle of 4 front & back scallops), horizontally on inside of Bag with top edge below shells. Sew the Handle Tab to bag along top edge, leaving short ends open for bamboo handle to pass through, then sew bottom edge to bag. Line your bag if desired.

    None of these patterns list the weight of the yarn. While we could most likely figure it out with a little research, I think it’s a serious omission of a detail that’s standard on patterns you’ll see anywhere.
