Fern Forest Table Runner

Twelve beautiful fern leaves close to form a unique beginning for each crocheted medallion. Each medallion is joined creating an ideal runner or doily for a coffee table or dining room table.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Each motif = 7”; Runner = 20”x 30”

Gauge: Each Fern Petal = 1½” in length

Yarn:

Light weight yarn Tahki Yarns Cotton Classic (100 % Cotton; 108 yards [99 meters]/50 grams: 3724 Leaf Green, 4 balls

Hook: US size H/8 (5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry Needle; scissors

Abbreviations

ch(s) – chain(s)

sc – single crochet

esc – extended single crochet

dc – double crochet

st(s) – stitch(es)

tr – treble crochet

yo – yarn over

RS – right side

Special Stitches

Esc (extended single crochet): Insert hook in designated st, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 1 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops.

Pattern

First Motif

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 13, sl st in 6th ch from hook to form ring. For petals, work sc in next ch, esc in next ch, dc in rem 5 chs, ch 7, *drop loop from hook, insert hook in beginning ring, pick up dropped loop, yo, draw through loop, ch 1, working in ch-7 just made, sc in next ch, esc in next ch, dc in next 5 chs, ch 7; rep from * 10 more times, join in last st of starting ch – 12 petals.

Rnd 2: Sl st between first and 2nd petal, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 5, sc between next 2 petals, ch 5; rep from * 10 more times, join in first sc – 12 ch-5 sp.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *work 7 sc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * 11 more times, join in first sc – 35 sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 7, sk next 6 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * 11 more times, join – 12 ch-7; 12 sc.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 8, sc in next sc; rep from * 11 more times, join – 12 ch-8; 12 sc.

Rnd 6: Ch 4, work 3 tr in same sp, ch 3, 4 more tr in same sp, ch 1, catching ch 7 and ch 8 of Rnds 4 and 5, sc, *ch 1, work 8 tr in next sc, ch 1, sc catching Rnds 4 and 5, ch 1, 4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr in next sc; rep from * 10 more times, ch 1, sc Rnds 4 and 5 tog, ch 1, join on top of ch 4 – 96 tr; 6 ch-3.

Fasten off.

Second Motif

Work Rnds 1-5 of First Motif

Rnd 6: Ch 4, work 7 tr in same sp, *ch 1, sc Rnds 4 and 5 tog, ch 1, work 4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr in next sc; rep from * 7 more times, ch 1, sc Rnds 4 and 5 tog, ch 1, 4 tr in next sc, ch 1, to join, drop loop from hook, insert hook under any ch-3 of First Motif, grab dropped loop from 2nd motif, ch 1, work last 4 tr in same sp, ch 1, sc Rnds 4 and 5 tog, ch 1, work 4 tr in next sc, drop loop from hook at 4th tr, insert hook in 4th tr of First motif, grab loop and continue working next 4 tr in sc, ch 1, sc Rnds 4 and 5 tog, ch 1, 4 tr in next sc, ch 1, drop loop from hook, insert hook under ch-3 of corresponding First motif, grab loop, ch 1, work last 4 tr in same sp, ch 1, sc Rnds 4 and 5 tog, ch 1, join on top of ch-4.

    Often when I’m crocheting, I find a chart helpful. It lets me see what stitch to put where so I don’t end up with a mess. Have you tried to chart your designs?
