This side-to-side cardigan uses the appearance of stripes within the lace stitch pattern to create figure-flattering vertical lines. Three-quarter length sleeves and clean, unfussy details make the cardigan versatile enough to wear over jeans and a camisole or over an elegant silk blouse.

Yarn: Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend (70% extrafine merino wool, 30% silk; 150 yards [135 meters]/50 grams): #3214 Oxygen, 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) skeins
Hooks: US size G/6 (4.0 mm), US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hooks
Notions: Tapestry needle, 1–1½″ button, stitch markers (optional)
Pattern Notes
This cardigan pattern is worked from side to side.
The back piece is worked from the center out to the sides.
Armholes are shaped by skipping specified number of repeats. See chart to identify and count repeats.
Pattern
Chain multiples of 4+2.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 5, skip next 3 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * across, turn.
Row 2: Ch 4, (counts as dc, ch 1), sc in next ch-5 space, * ch 3, sc in next ch-5 space, rep from * across, end with ch 1, dc in last sc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as sc, ch 2), 2 dc in first dc, *sc, ch 2, 2 dc in next sc, rep from * across, end with sc, ch 2 in last sc then work 2 dc cluster as follows: yo, insert hook into same sc, yo and pull through (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook into 3rd ch of t-ch, yo and pull through (5 loops on hook), yo and pull through all loops (cluster complete), turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first dc cluster, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, * sc, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-2 space, rep from * across, end with sc in 3rd ch of t-ch, turn.
Row 5: Ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), sc in first ch-2 space, * ch 5, sc in next ch-2 space, rep from * across, end with ch 2, dc in last sc, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first dc, * ch 5, sc in next ch-5 space, rep from * across ending with sc in 3rd ch of last ch-5, turn.
Rep rows 2-6 as directed.
Back
Using smaller hook, chain 110 (114, 118, 118, 122).
Foundation Row (RS): Working in back bump of ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn.
Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 5, skip next 3 sc, sc in next sc, rep from * across ending with sc in last sc, turn.
Beg on row 2, work in patt for 15 (17, 19, 19, 21) more rows ending on a row 6 (3, 5, 5, 2) then and fasten off.
Shape Right Armhole
Next row: Join yarn in 8th (9th, 10th, 10th, 11th) st rep from top edge and cont in est patt for 5 (6, 8, 10, 10) more rows ending on a row 6 (4, 2, 5, 2), then fasten off.
Left Side
With RS facing join yarn at beg of base ch. Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 5, skip next 3 sc, sc in next sc, rep from * across ending with sc in last sc, turn. Next: Beg on row 2, work in pattern for 15 (17, 19, 19, 21) more rows ending on a row 6 (3, 5, 5, 2). Turn, then fasten off. Shape armhole same as above.
Front (Make 2)
Using smaller hook, chain 110 (114, 118, 118, 122).
Work in pattern for 11 (13, 15, 15, 17) rows ending on a row 6 (3, 5, 5, 2), then turn and fasten off. Shape armhole same as back then fasten off.
Sleeve (Make 2)
Using smaller hook, chain 58. Work in pattern for 33 (35, 38, 41, 43) rows then fasten off.
Finishing
Block pieces to finished measurements. Seam shoulders. Set sleeve into armhole. Work underarm and side seams in one pass as follows: With RS facing join yarn to one side at bottom edge, ch 3, sl st to other side at bottom edge, *ch 3, sl st to opposite side in next st rep, rep from * across until seam is complete.
Button Bands
Using larger hook and with RS facing, join yarn at bottom of front opening. Work 10 rows of sc. At the same time, work 1 button hole opening 1¼″ or 3 cm or size appropriate for button located approximately 11″ or 28 cm from bottom on right hand side.
Cuffs
Using larger hook and with RS facing, join yarn at sleeve edge and work 7 rows in sc then fasten off.
Attach button. Weave in ends.

There are several unknown measurements required. Hopefully this gets straightened out. Diff to figure how many chs to get proper size.

Hi the pattern does not tell you how many chain to start. Just says chain multiples of 4+2
I cannot find where we are told how many starter chains to have, only multiples of 4 plus 2. Could you please elaborate?

The first 6 rows after multiple of 4 +2, are the pattern rows . Scroll down to where it says back. That will bring you to the construction pattern.
The section where it states “Chain multiples of 4 + 2” is there to explain how the pattern is constructed if a size needs to be altered. After you have decided what size to make, start with the BACK and chain the desired number of chains stated for that size.

for those allergic to wool: any DK weight yarn should work, as long as you get the same guage.
Amended: The mint breeze cardigan is made with marino wool and I’m allergic to wool. Is there another yarn I can use that would compare to this yarn but without wool? Thank you.
