A Note from the Editor

To any non-animal lover (and perhaps even to dog or cat people), this will sound absurd: a few months ago, I took our rescue rabbit on his first rabbit speed dating session at Red Door Animal Shelter. Dating? For rabbits? No need to re-read that sentence. You read it right. I know how it sounds, but my husband and I wanted to find a rabbit that melded well with the pet we already adored more than I ever thought possible. “Dating” made it easier to ensure that would happen, and as my husband and I worked together to slowly introduce the rabbits to one another, I found the experience so much more rewarding than I expected. Together, my husband and I helped two creatures find acceptance and companionship in another of their own kind. It made me think about those who are special in my own life: my husband, my family, my friends – that one co-worker who buys you a vending machine cookie when you’re having a bad day.

These are the people we’re supposed to cherish, and with the speed of life moving faster than air rushing past an open car window, there’s no better time to start than now. An easy way to show people just how much you care is to make them a handmade gift. To get inspired, just check out the Winter Essentials section inside this special issue. Inside you’ll find projects like the cozy Mustard Seed Fingerless Gloves, the ultra-warm Icy Blue Crochet Winter Set and the luscious Plum Raspberry Pullover.

If you’re looking for a non-commercial and straight-from-the-heart gift for Valentine’s Day, we have plenty of ideas to get you started. Try your hand at the Owl Candy Keeper to make the cutest candy bar cozy you’ve ever seen. It’ll go great with your handmade Lace-Trimmed Sweetheart Cards made with real crochet edging! No matter what you decide to make from this winter-friendly issue, you’re bound to find the perfect homemade gift for someone you love.

Happy crocheting,
