Don the (Amigurumi) Donkey

Meet Don the amazing donkey! No matter if you make this little guy for decoration or for a little one to play with, you’re bound to fall in love.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 5 x 3” (12 x 8 cm)

Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this project

Materials

Yarn: Bravo Schachenmayr (100% acrylic; 145 yards [133 meters]/50 grams): #08224 White (Yarn A, 1 ball), #08295 Medium Grey Heather (Yarn B, 1 ball), #08325 Green-Chartreuse (Yarn C, 1 ball)
Hook: US size E/4 (0.5 mm) hook
Notions: Markers, tapestry needle, 6 mm black amigurumi eyes, toy stuffing

Body

Using Yarn B, ch 2 and make 6 sc in second ch from hook.
Or
Magic ring, make 6 sc in magic ring.
Rnd 1: Inc in each stitch around. (12 sts)
Rnd 2: *1 sc, inc,* repeat from * to * around. (18 sts)
Rnd 3: *2 sc, inc,* repeat from * to * around. (24 sts)
Rnds 4-8: Sc in each stitch around. (24 sc)
Rnd 9: *2 sc, dec,* repeat from * to * around. (18 sts)
Rnds 10-13: Sc in each stitch around. (18 sts)
Rnd 14: *1 sc, dec,* repeat from * to * around. (12 sts)
Rnd 15: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 16: *dec* rep from * to * around. (6)
Fasten off.

Head

Using Yarn A, ch 2 and make 6 sc in second ch from hook.
Or

Attach safety eyes in Round 8.

Rnd 13: *3 sc, dec,* repeat from * to * around. (24 sts)
Rnd 14: *2 sc, dec,* repeat from * to * around. (18 sts)

Fasten off.

Ears (Make 2)

Using Yarn B, ch 2 and make 4 sc in second ch from hook.
Or
Magic ring, make 4sc in magic ring.
Rnd 1: Inc in each stitch around. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: *1 sc, inc,* repeat from * to * around. (12 sts)
Rnds 3-9: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 10: *1 sc, dec,* repeat from * to * around. (8 sts)
Rnd 11: *dec,* repeat from * to * around. (4 sts)
Fasten off. Pinch ears at lower end and attach to head.

Legs (Make 2)

Using Yarn A, ch 2 and make 6 sc in second ch from hook.
Or
Magic ring, make 6 sc in magic ring.
Rnd 1: Inc in each stitch around. (12 sts)
Rnd 2: Sc thbl (through back loops) in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Change to Yarn B.
Rnds 4-8: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 9: *dec,* repeat from * to * around. (6 sts)
Fasten off. Sew to lower part of body.

Arms (Make 2)

Using Yarn A, ch 2 and make 5 sc in second ch from hook.
Or
Magic ring, make 5 sc in magic ring.
Rnd 1: Inc in each stitch around. (10 sts)
Rnd 2: Sc thbl (through back loops) in each st around. (10 sts)
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (10 sts)
Change to Yarn B.
Rnd 4-8: Sc in each st around. (10 sts)
Rnd 9: *dec,* repeat from * to * around. (5 sts)
Fasten off. Sew to upper part of body.

Shawl

Using Yarn C, ch 46, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn and ch 2. (45 sts)
Row 1: Hdc in each st across. (45 sts)
Fasten off.

Mane

Using Yarn A, cut straps measuring approx. 8cm (3 inch) long. Attach to head by folding your yarn in half, so that there’s a U-shape on one side and two ‘tails’ on the other side. Attach the hair to the middle stitches between the ears. Insert your hook into the stitch and pull the bend through the loop; pull the tails through the loop. Once the hair’s in place, you can feel free to style it! yarn ball
