Halo Hooded Angel Blanket

Wrap up your littlest angel in this precious hooded baby blanket that features its own crocheted halo. Made with soft, velvety yarn, this blanket draws inspiration from quilt blocks and features a unique angel design that appears when the blanket is laid flat.

Gauge: 11 sc = 4 inches

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Pluscious Solids (100% Polyester; 148.7 yds [136 m]/ 100 g [3.5 oz]: 25 Bluejay (MC, 1.5 balls), 14 Baby Blue (CC1, 1 ball), 16 Pinks (CC2, 1 ball), 15 Banana (CC3, .25 ball)

Hook: US size J/10 (6.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

Squares are worked in the round, turning after each join.
Half Square/Hood is worked in rows, turning after each row.
To join new color, work last stitch of old color until 2 lps on hook, drop old color to WS, pick up new color and draw through both lps. Always keep dropped yarn to WS.
A hdc join is equal to a ch-2 join.
A ch-3 at beginning of Rnd counts as a dc.

Special Stitches
Corner: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp.

Pattern

1 Color Squares – make 4 in MC, 2 in CC1, 1 in CC2.
With MC (CC1, CC2) make a magic ring,

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, join with hdc to beg dc, turn. (12 dc)

Rnds 2 – 6: Ch 3, dc in same sp, [1 dc in each dc to next ch-2, Corner in ch-2 sp] 4 times omitting last Corner, 2 dc in last ch-2 sp, join with hdc to beg dc, turn. (28/44/60/76/92 dc, 4 ch-2)
Fasten off.

2 Color Squares – make 2 in CC1/CC2

With CC1 make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring, drop CC1 and join CC2, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ring join with hdc to beg dc, turn. (12 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, Corner in ch-2 sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, drop CC2, join CC1, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, Corner in ch-2 sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in last ch-2 sp, join with hdc to beg dc, turn. (28 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, Corner in ch-2 sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, drop CC1, join CC2, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, Corner in ch-2 sp, dc to last ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, join with hdc to beg dc, turn. (44 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2. (60 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3. (76 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2. (92 dc, 4 ch-2)

Fasten off.

Half Square/Hood – make 1 in CC2.

With CC2 make a magic ring.
Row 1: Ch 3, 6 dc in ring, turn. (7 dc)

Row 2: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, Corner in next st, 1 dc in next st, (2 dc in next st) twice, turn. (14 dc, 1 ch-2)

Row 3: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, Corner in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 5 sts, (2 dc in next st) twice, turn. (22 dc, 1 ch-2)

Row 4: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 9 sts, Corner in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 9 sts, (2 dc in next st) twice, turn. (30 dc, 1 ch-2)

Row 5: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 13 sts, Corner in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 13 sts, (2 dc in next st) twice, turn. (38 dc, 1 ch-2)

Row 6: (Ch 3, dc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 17 sts, Corner in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 17 sts, (2 dc in next st) twice, turn. (46 dc, 1 ch-2)
Fasten off.

Halo – make 1 in CC3

With CC3 work 39 fsc, ch 1, sc in each st to end. Fasten off leaving a 24” tail.
Using tail, join ends to form a ring, sew ring on front of hood in an oval shape.

Assembly

1. Sew the 9 squares together on WS using photo as a guide to create the angel.

2. Position Hood on top of the CC2 square. With MC, work a round of sc evenly around perimeter of blanket, placing 3 sc in each corner and simultaneously attaching the Hood.

3. With MC, sl st on RS of fabric to outline the wings as shown in photo.

Finishing

Weave in all ends, damp block.
