Sleepy Unicorn Baby Booties

Keep your baby’s feet warm in these adorable cotton baby booties. With sleepy little eyes, golden horns and pastel manes, these booties are irresistible to make and so much fun to give!

Size: 0-3 months, sole measures (3.5” / [9 cm] long

Gauge: 5 sts = 1” [2.5 cm] in hdc

Materials

Light weight yarn Yarn: Scheepjes Softfun (60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic; 153 yards [140 meters]/50 grams): 2426 (A, 1 ball)

Fine weight yarn

Scheepjes Catona (100% Cotton; 27 yards [25 meters]/10 grams): 179 Topaz (B, 1 ball), 110 Jet Black (C, 1 ball), 238 Powder Pink (D, 1 ball), 255 Nude (E, 1 ball), 522 Primrose (F, 1 ball), 392 Lime Juice (G, 1 ball), 509 Baby Blue (H, 1 ball)

Hook: US size D/3 (3.25 mm), US size E/4 (3.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker

Ch 1 at the beg of a rnd does not count as a st.

Pattern

Sole (make 2)

Rnd 1: With larger hook and A, ch 11, 5 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next 8 sts, 5 hdc in the last st, turn to work opposite side of beg ch as follows; hdc in the next 8 sts, sl st to the top of first hdc to join. (26 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *2 hdc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 8 sts; rep from * once more, sl st to the top of the first hdc to join. (36 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *(2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st) 5 more times, hdc in the next 8 sts; rep from * once more, sl st to the top of the first hdc to join. (46 sts)

Fasten off. Weave in ends

At this point the sole should measure 3.5” / [9 cm] long. If it doesn’t, adjust hook size.

Moccasin Upper (make 2)

This section of the pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining. Place the stitch marker in the top of the first st to mark the start of each rnd.

Rnd 1: With larger hook and A, join yarn at the centre back of the sole in BL, ch 1, sc in each st around. (46 sts)

Rnds 2-4: Working in both loops from this point onwards, sc in each st around.

Rnd 5: Sc in the next 15 sts, hdc2tog 8 times, sc in the next 15 sts. (38 sts)

Rnd 6: Sc in the next 13sts, hdc2tog 6 times, sc in the next 13 sts. (32 sts)

Rnd 7: Sc in the next 10sts, hdc2tog 6 times, sc in the next 10 sts. (26 sts)

Rnds 8-9: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 10: Sl st in the next st, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, sl st to the top of the beg ch-3 to join. (26 sts)

Rnds 11-13: Ch 3, (FPdc in next st, BPdc in next st) around to end, sl st to top of beg ch-3 to join. (26 sts)

Fasten off. Weave in ends

Ears (make 4)

Rnd 1: With smaller hook and A, make a magic ring (adjustable ring), work 3 sc into the ring. (3 sts)

Rnds 2-4: Work 2 sc in the first st, sc in each st around. (6 sts)

Rnd 5: (Sc, sc2tog) twice. (4 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching Ears to Moccasin Upper.

Horn (make 2)

Rnd 1: With smaller hook and B, make a magic ring (adjustable ring), work 3 sc into the ring. (3 sts)

Rnd 2: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 3: Work 2 sc in first st, sc in each st around. (4 sts)

Rnd 4: Work 2 sc in first st, sc in each st around. (5 sts)

Rnds 5-6: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 7: Work 2 sc in first st, sc in each st around. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching Horn to Moccasin Upper.

Finishing

With C, embroider some eyes with eyelashes onto the front of each Moccasin Upper on Rnd 4 approx. 3-4 sts apart.

Attach Horn on Moccasin Upper on Rnd 7.

Attach Ears to either side of Horn on Moccasin Upper (and in line with eyes) on Rnd 7.

Using D, E, F, G and H, cut lengths of yarn (3.5” / [9 cm] long for the mane, add fringe in a single line on the back of Moccasin Upper over Rnds 1-9.

Weave in any rem ends.
