Lodge Plaid Blanket

The idea for this pattern was born out of the challenge of making a plaid-like blanket that didn’t involve hundreds of loose ends. Introducing the brand new Lodge Plaid blanket, featuring fewer loose ends and beautifully straight edges — you’ll love the instant cabin classic!

Skill Level: Advanced

Size: Finished blanket: 53.5” / [136 cm] x 44” / [112 cm]

Strip A: 6.25” / [16 cm] wide; Strip B: 5” / [13 cm] wide

Gauge: 14 sts and 8 rows = 4’’ [10 cm] in dc after wet blocking

Materials

Light weight yarnYarn: Scheepjes Colour Crafter (100 % Acrylic; 328 yards [300 meters]/100 grams): Roermond (C1, 3 balls), Zandvoort (C2, 2 balls), Pollare (C3, 2 balls).

Hook: US size 7 (4.5 mm).

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, glass head pins to block your work.

Special Stitches

Double crochet cluster 2-dc cluster: Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Half double crochet cluster 2-hdc cluster: Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st, yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Pattern Notes

Changing colors

Start working indicated stitch as normal until you have only 2 lps left on hook. Drop current colour (do not cut it). Current colour should be hanging to left of new colour if you are righft-handed (Pic 1). Pick up new colour and finish st with new colour. Leave old colour hanging freely (Pics 2 and 3). Make sure every colour change happens in WS of work.

 

 

 

 

Strip A (make 4)

Row 1: With C1, ch 3 (does not count as first dc), fdc in 3rd ch from hook, fdc 21 sts total, change to C3 on fdc 21, 2 fdc, ch 2 (does not count as a st from now on), turn. (23 sts)

Row 2: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 20 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Row 3: Dc in first st and in each of next 20 sts, change to C3 on 21 st, dc in next st and 2-dc cluster in the last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 5 sts, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next st; rep from * 5 more times, dc in each of next 3 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Row 17: This row is worked entirely in C3, hdc in first st and in each of next 21 sts, 2-hdc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Row 18: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 20 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Row 19: Dc in first st and in each of next 20 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 1, turn.

Row 20: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 20 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st. Fasten off, cut C2, turn (end of Motif A2).

Row 21: Start Motif A1 again, attach C1 to first st, ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in first st and in each of next 20 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 22-32: Rep Rows 2-12.

Rows 33-40: Rep Rows 13-20.

Cont working as in Rows 21-40 until you have 5 Motifs A1 and 4 Motifs A2 in your Strip or until reaching the desired length. Make sure to start and finish Strip A with Motif A1.

Once you’ve worked last motif of Strip, cut yarn.

Fasten off. Weave in loosse ends.

Strip B (make 4)

Row 1: With C2, ch 3 (does not count as first dc), fdc in 3rd ch from hook, fdc for a total of 16 sts, change to C3 on fdc 16, 2 fdc, ch 2 (does not count as a st from now on), turn. (18 sts)

Row 2: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 15 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Row 3: Dc in first st and in each of next 15 sts, change to C3 on st 16, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 4-11: Rep Rows 2-3.

Row 12: Rep Row 2. Fasten off, cut C2, turn (end of Motif B1).

Row 13: Attach C1 to first st, ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in first st and in each of next 15 sts, change to C3 on st 16, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 14: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 15 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st work, ch 2, turn.

Row 15: Dc in first st and in each of next 15 sts, change to C3 on st 16, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 16: This row is worked entirely in C3, hdc in first st and in each of next 16 sts, 2-hdc cluster in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 17: This row is worked entirely in C3, hdc in first st and in each of next 16 sts, 2-hdc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 18-19: Rep Rows 14-15.

Row 20: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 15 sts, 2-dc cluster in next st. Fasten off, cut C1, turn (end of Motif B2).

Row 21: Start Motif B1 again. Attach C2 to first st, ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in first st and in each of next 15 sts, change to C3 on st 16, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 22-32: Rep Rows 2-12.

Rows 33-40: Rep Rows 13-20.

Cont working Rows 21-40 until you have 5 Motifs B1 and 4 Motifs B2 or until reaching desired length. Make sure to start and finish Strip B with Motif B1.

Once you’ve worked last motif of Strip, cut yarn.

Fasten off. Weave in loosse ends.

Final Strip A (make 1)

The last strip of Blanket is worked as a normal Strip A, but you will make 2 C3 borders – one in each side of strip. This means you will work with 3 balls of yarn at same time: 2 balls of C3, 1 for each border, and 1 ball of either C1 or C2, as indicated.

Row 1: With C3, ch 3 (does not count as first dc), fdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 fdc, change to C1, 21 fdc, change to C3 on fdc 21, 2 fdc, ch 2 (does not count as a st from now on), turn. (25 sts)

Row 2: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd second st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 3: Dc in first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 5 sts, *ch 1, sk next st, dc; rep from * 5 more times, dc in each of next 4 sts, change to C3 in 4th st, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 13 and 14: Dc in first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 15: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 1, turn.

Row 16: This row is worked entirely in C3, using first ball of C3 all the way through to end, hdc in first st and in each of next 23 sts, 2-hdc cluster in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 17: This row is worked entirely in C3, using same ball of C3 all the way through to end, hdc in first st and in each of next 23 sts, 2-hdc cluster in next st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 18-19: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Row 20: Dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C2 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, cut C2, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn (end of Motif B2).

Row 21: Start Motif A1 again, dc in each of first 2 sts, change to C1 on 2nd st, dc in each of next 21 sts, change to C3 on st 21, dc in next st, 2-dc cluster in last st, ch 2, turn.

Rows 22-32: Rep Rows 2-12.

Rows 33-40: Rep Rows 13-20.

Cont working Rows 21-40 until you have 5 Motifs A1 and 4 Motifs A2 or until reaching desired length.

Once you’ve worked last motif of Strip, cut yarn.

Fasten off. Weave in loosse ends.

Finishing

For best results, wet block each strip before sewing them together. Each strip has a C3 edge and an non-C3 edge (except for Final Strip A, which has two C3 edges). You will sew C3 edge of one strip to non-C3 edge of next. Start by joining together final strip A and any strip B. After that, keep alternating strips A and B.

Invisible Seam

Place strips flat on table with WS facing you, making sure motifs and lines in each strip are aligned.

Cut a length of C3 approximately 1/3 longer than length of strips and thread it in a wool needle.

The invisible seam uses a snaky movement as shown in the pictures below.

Since you will be sewing posts of sts together, you will need to pick any loop that is close edge and join it to its equivalent on other strip.

Border

Add a C3 border to the bottom and top of the blanket:

Row 1: With RS facing you, attach C3 to first st at the bottom of the blanket, ch 2, dc in first st, dc in each st through to end, ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn.

Row 2: Sc in first st and in each st through to end of row.

Fasten off, cut yarn. Weave in loose ends.

Rep Rows 1-2 on top edge of Blanket.

    Look up foundation double crochet. You should be able to find instructions online. Once you figure out how to do fdc, you will see that it goes faster than doing chs and then dc.

    I have never done a pattern without a beginning chain – how would you do this pattern starting with a chain?
