Pumpkin Patch Cowl

Stay warm in this fun and stylish cowl. One side of this cowl has dots that remind us of pumpkins and the other side of ridges reminiscent of harvested fields. Combine two simple stitch patterns to create this interestingly textured cowl.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 6” wide x 33 (44)” circumference

Gauge: 18 sts and 9 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Dots Section after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Knit Picks Swish Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 110 yards [101 meters]/50 grams): 24297 Allspice, 3 balls

Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Tch – turning chain

FPdc – Front Post double crochet

BPdc – Back Post double crochet

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch – (Yo, insert hook into st, pull up a loop) 5 times, there should be 11 loops on hook, yo, pull through all loops.

Pattern Notes

The cowl is worked back and forth in rows and seamed using slip stitches.

Rib Section

Ch 30.
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across to end of row – 28 dc.

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in 1st st, (FPdc around post of next dc) twice, *(BPdc around post of next dc) twice, (FPdc around post of next dc) twice; rep from * across to last st, dc.

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, (BPdc around post of next BPdc) twice, *(FPdc around post of next FPdc) twice, (BPdc around post of next BPdc) twice; rep from * across to last st, dc.

Row 4: Ch 2, dc in first st, (FPdc around post of next FPdc) twice, *(BPdc around post of next BPdc) twice, (FPdc around post of next FPdc) twice; rep from * across to last st, dc.

Rep Rows 3-4 until piece meas 16½ (22)” or half of desired finished cowl circumference.

Dots Section

Row 1: Ch 2, dc in in next 4 sts, *dc2tog, dc in in next 4 sts; rep from * across to end of row – 24 dc.

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each dc across to end of row – 24 hdc.

Row 3: Ch 2, *dc in next 4 hdc, work Puff Stitch in next hdc; rep from * across, ending with dc in last 3 hdc and tch.

Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in each dc across to end of row – 24 hdc.

Row 5: Ch 2 (count as dc), dc in next hdc, work Puff Stitch in next hdc, *dc in next 4 hdc, work Puff Stitch in next hdc; rep from * across row, ending with dc in last hdc and tch.

Row 6: Ch 1, hdc in each st across to end of row.

Rep Rows 3-6 until Dots Section meas same as Rib Section.

Do not fasten off.

Finishing

Seam short end together using sl st.

Weave in all ends. Block.
