Elsie Granny Square Tank

More than often, we are surprised to realize the newest creations work because they freshen up a classic. Granny square for example, is one of the most traditional forms of crochet, however it never gets old. With a touch of retro colors and hypnotizing lines, this granny square top definitely gives you a trendy look.

Hook: US size C/2 (3.0 mm), US size E/4 (3.5 mm)

Pattern Notes

The garment is worked flat in two pieces (front and back) and then seamed on the sides. Length is added by working around the bottom part of the joined pieces.

Straps are added on the front and seamed to the back.

Ch 3 at the beginning of the round/row counts as dc.

Change colour every 2 rows/rounds throughout the whole pattern. The change is not mentioned in the pattern.

When changing colour at the mitered part, finish the last st of previous colour with the new one. Carry along yarns of other colours by dc over them on the first st of the new colour row.

Always turn your work after each row/round, except for the first two rounds.

Pattern

Body (make 2)

With CC1 and larger hook, ch 4, sl st to first ch to make a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in next ch, *ch 3, 3 dc in next ch; rep from * twice more, ch 3, sl st to the top of beg ch-3, do not turn.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, *(3 dc, ch 3, dc 3) in ch-3 sp; rep from * twice more, (3 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp, sl st to the top of beg ch-3.

Fasten off.

Row 3: Join new yarn in any ch-3 sp corners, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, 3 dc in sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, 3 dc on sp between 2 3-dc shells, 3 dc in ch 3-sp, turn.

Row 4: Ch 3, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each of in next sp between 2 3-dc shells, 1 dc in top of beg ch-3 of previous row, turn.

Row 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in next sp, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, 3 dc in last sp, turn.

Rows 6-37 (39, 41, 41): Rep Rows 4-5.

Row 38 (40, 42, 42): Rep Row 4.

Fasten off.

Rnd 39 (41, 43, 43): Join new yarn to any ch-3 sp corners, ch 3, 2 dc on the same sp, *3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp; rep from * twice more, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, 3 dc in ch-3 sp, sl st to the top of beg ch-3.

Fasten off.

With WS facing you, the center of the mitered square at the bottom right corner, start working the underarms. Join new yarn to the sp after 5 (4, 4, 5) 3-dc shells from the top left corner.

Row 40 (42, 44, 44): Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, *3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) on ch 3 sp; rep from * once more, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells until last 5 (4, 4, 5) 3-dc shells from the top right corner, leaving last 5 (4, 4, 5) 3-dc shells unworked, turn.

Row 41 (43, 45, 45): Ch 3, *3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 3 sp; rep from * once more, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, dc in the last st, turn.

Row 42 (44, 46, 46): Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, *3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc shells, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp; rep from * once more, 3 dc in each of next sp between 2 3-dc, turn.

Row 43 (45, 47, 47): Rep Row 41 (43, 45, 45).

Size S Only

Fasten off.

Sizes – (M, L, XL) Only

Rep the last 2 rows – (1, 2, 3) time(s).

Fasten off.

Put the body panels with RS facing each other, seam the sides.

Work around the bottom. Join new yarn on the sp under the side seam

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc on the same sp, 3 dc in each sp around, sl st in top of beg ch-3, turn.

Sizes S (M, L, -) Only

Rep the last rnd 6 (2, 2, -) times.

Fasten off.

Left Strap

With RS facing you and larger hook, join new yarn in ch-3 sp on the top right corner.

Row 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in ch-3 sp and sc on each of next 9 dc, turn.

Row 2: Sc across, turn.

Work as established until Strap meas 4 (5, 5, 5.25)” / [10 (12.5, 12.5, 13) cm] long, seam to Back.

Right Strap

With RS facing you and larger hook, join new yarn on the first dc of the 3rd 3-dc shell from the right top corner.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each of next 9 dc, 2 sc in ch-3 sp, turn.

Row 2: Sc across, turn.

Work as established until Strap meas 4 (5, 5, 5.25)” / [10 (12.5, 12.5, 13) cm] long, seam to Back.

Finishing

With RS facing you and smaller hook, sc around the inner side of the neck opening.

Weave in all ends.
