Mitered Triangles Afghan

A modern twist to create a contemporary feel. Large miter triangles meet at the center of this afghan to create a visual effect that draws the eye outward. Simple rows of single and double crochet, can be made in a variety of color band widths, to allow a very customizable design. This is a great design for both men and women, with some bright colors it can even be enjoyed by kids.

Medium weight yarnYarn: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (100% Acrylic; 170 yards [155 meters]/100 grams): #125 Taupe (MC, 5 balls), #109 Colonial Blue (CC1, 4 balls), #134 Terracotta (CC2, 3 balls), #158 Mustard (CC3, 2 balls)

Hook: US size J/10 (6.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, movable stitch marker

Pattern Notes

Throw is worked in 4 squares, with all first corners worked in the center of the throw, and then worked outward to the corner of the throw.

Insert a removeable stitch marker at the first corner of each row and moving to the next row as the square is worked.

The last 2 rows of each square will not have a corner worked, instead stitches will be worked to “fill” in the remainder of the square.

Square 1

With MC, ch 166.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 71 ch, sc3tog of next 3 ch (corner), insert marker in st just made, sc in next 90 ch, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st, dc in each st across until 1 st rem before st marker, dc3tog over next 3 sts, move marker to st just made, dc in rem sts across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st across until 2 sts before marker, sc5tog over the next 5 sts, move marker to st just made, sc in rem sts across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, dc in each st across until 1 st rem before marker, dc3tog over next 3 sts, move marker to st just made, dc in rem sts across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st across until 1 st before marker, sc3tog over the next 3 sts, move marker to st just made, sc in rem sts across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 3, dc in next st, dc in each st across until 1 st rem before marker, dc5tog over next 5 sts, move marker to st just made, dc in rem sts across, turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st across until 1 st before marker, sc3tog over the next 3 sts, move marker to st just made, sc in rem sts across, turn.

Rows 8-12: Rep Rows 2-6. Change to CC1 at the end of Row 12.

Row 13: Rep Row 7

Rows 14-24: Rep Rows 2-12. Change to CC2 at the end of Row 24.

Row 25: Rep Row 7.

Rows 26-36: Rep Rows 2-12. Change to CC3 at the end of Row 36.

Row 37: Rep Row 7.

Rows 38-48: Rep Rows 2-12. Change to MC at the end of Row 48.

Row 49: Rep Row 7.

Rows 50-53: Rep Rows 2-5.

Row 54: Ch 3, dc in each st across to marker, remove marker dc in same st, sk next st, sl st to next 2 sts, turn.

Row 55: Ch 1, sc in each st across.

Fasten off.

Square 2

With MC and RS of Square 1 facing, join to center ch of sc3tog st (corner) in Row 1 of Square 1, ch 92.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 90 ch, sc3tog over next ch and join and sc of the “short” side of Square 1, insert marker in st just made, sc in unused lps of beg-ch in next 72 sts, turn.
Rows 2-53: Work as for Square 1.

Row 54: Sl st in same st, sk next 2 sts, remove marker, dc in same st, dc in each st across, turn.

Row 55: Ch 1, sc in each st across, sl st to same sl st at the beg of Row 54.

Fasten off.

Square 3

With MC and RS of Square 1 and Square 2 facing, join to same point as Square 2 join, ch 74.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 72 ch, sc3tog over next ch and join and sc of the “long” side of Square 2, insert marker in st just made, sc in unused lps of beg-ch in next 90 sts, turn.
Rows 2-55: Work as for Square 1.

Square 4

With MC and RS of Square 1, Square 2, and Square 3 facing, join to unused lp of beg-ch of last st in Row 1 of Square 3.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 89 sts, sc3tog over next sc and join and sc of the “short” side of Square 3, insert marker in st just made, sc in next 72 sts, turn.
Rows 2-53: Work as for Square 1.

Rows 54-55: Work as for Square 2.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.
