Countryside Pillow

The layered landscape of the countryside on a bright day inspired this pillow. Crocheted using the altered berry stitch and a smattering of different yarns and colors, this pattern can be a great stash buster to create a landscape at sunrise or sunset, fields of green or fields of wheat. Let yourself explore all the possibilities of nature with this pattern.

Special Stitches

Altered Berry Stitch (ABS): Yarn over and pull up a loop as if to work a single crochet, create a 3 ch using only the loop you have just created (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops, 1 sc in the same st, skip the next st.

Pattern Notes

  • You may wish to recount stitches at the end of each row just to ensure the number of required stitches are correct as you work.
  • You may find it useful to add a stitch marker into the first and last st of your row, moving the stitch marker up as you work.
  • The ch1 at the start of a st does not count as a st
  • Changing Color (CC): When changing to a different color, pull the new color through the last loops of the previous st to complete that st. Change colors in this manner whenever indicated on the pattern. You can either leave yarn strand to pick it up again on the next row, or cut and reattach as required.

On the last st do not fasten off but neatly work sc in each st and row end, changing colors where applicable, work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner. (326 st + 4 x ch1-sps)

Attaching the zip:

  • Turn your work so that the right sides of the panels are facing each other and pin your zip into place in the middle of each panel at the top of each edge; teeth should be a wee bit above your last row of sc; not below or even to ensure that will help to make sure your crochet does not get caught in the zipper when in use.
  • Sew the zip into place securely using – I found that a blanket stitch worked best (see photo).
  • Sew up the remaining ends of the cushion so that there are no gaps around the zipper.
  • Sew up the other sides of your panels to finish off your cushion, inner the cushion inner to complete.

Example of approximate color placement of front of cushion (please note that squares do not represent actual stitches)

This pillow is so beautiful! I would love to crochet a blanket using this pattern – have you done this and is a pattern available?
