Witchy Halloween Table Runner

Size: Each motif measures 5”x5”, Length of runner is 30” w/o witch; witch hat/legs that hangs down on each side is about 12”.

Gauge: 4 rows on main square motif = 2”, 10 dc on the main square = 2”

Yarn: Cascade Ultra Pima (100% Pima Cotton; 220 yards [200 meters]/3.5 ounces [100 grams]): Color #3608  Regal 107 yards/98 meters, Color #3822 Vibrant Orange 57 yards/52 meters, Color #3870 White Grape 69 yards/63 meters, Color #3754 Black 440 yards/400 meters, Color #3747 Gold approximately 5 yards/5 meters, Color #3849 Chipmunk approximately 2 yards/2 meters, Color #3718 Natural approximately 2 yards/2 meters

Black Thread – approximately 1 yard, 1 meter

Hook:  Hook F – 3.75mm

Specialty Stitches

V st: (dc, ch 1, dc) worked in one st or sp

Beg V st: chain 4, double crochet in same space

Corner: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)

Tr2tog: *Yo twice, insert hook in next st, [yo, draw through 2 loops] twice, rep from * once working into next indicated st; with 3 loops on hook, yo, draw through all 3 loops.

Pattern Notes

Rnd 1: With black yarn, make an MR. Work ch 3 (counts as a st), 15 dc in MR. (16)

Rnd 3: Attach a colored yarn to last st made, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 4, *sc in next ch-4 lp, ch 4. Repeat from * around. Join to first st. (8 sc and 8 ch-4 lps)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, sc in same st), ch 4, *(sc, ch 1, sc) in next sc , ch 4. Repeat from * around. Join to first st. (16 sc, 8 ch-4 lps, 8 ch-1)

Rnd 5: Sl st into ch-1 sp between sc sts, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, *ch 3, ([dc, ch 1] 5 times, dc) in next ch-1 sp between sc sts, ch 3**, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-1 sp between next sc sts. Repeat from * around, ending at ** on last side. Join to first st. (24 dc, 20 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 sc, 8 ch-3 lps)

Rnd 7: Sl st into V st, beg V st in same space, (dc in next ch-1 sp and next dc) 4 times, dc in next st, corner in corner, dc in next st, (dc in next st and next ch-1 sp) 4 times, *V st in V st, (dc in next ch-1 sp and next dc) 4 times, dc in next st, corner in corner, dc in next st, (dc in next st and next ch-1 sp) 4 times. Beginning Crown:

Row 1: Ch 13, sc in 2nd ch and next ch across. Turn. (12 sc)

Row 2.: Ch 1, sc in same st and next st(s) across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next sts across. Turn. (11 sts)

Rows 4-5: Ch 1, sc in same st and next sts across. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next sts across. Turn. (10)

Rows 7-8: Ch 1, sc in same st and next sts across. Turn.

Row 9: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next sts across. Turn. (9)

Brim:

Row 2: Ch 4, tr in same st, 2 tr in each of next 4 sts, dc in next 4 sts, 2 tr in each of next 2 sts, dc on next 4 sts, 2 tr in each of next 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts, tr in next 4 sts, 2 tr in last st. (22 tr, 12 dc)

Hat Buckle:

Row 1: With gold yarn, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hk and next ch, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 2 chs, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 2 chs, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 2 chs, 2 sc in next ch, join with a sl st to 1st sc. (16 sc)

Fasten off.

Hat Band: (make 4, 2 bands for each witch hat)

Row 1:  Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch and next 4 ch. (5 sc)

Fasten off.

Witch Leg: (make 4, 2 legs for each witch, work in rounds).

Rnd 1: With orange yarn make an MR, ch 1, 10 sc in MR. (10 sc)

Rnds 2-3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Do not cut yarn, carry up on inside.

Rnds 4-7: Repeat R2-3 with green yarn, leave a tail for sewing.

Repeat R2 thru R7 until each leg measures approximately 4.5” in length, alternating 3 rounds of orange and 4 rounds of green.

Witch Shoe (make 8, 2 for each witch leg – front and back)

Row 1: With black yarn, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hk and next 4 chs across. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 4 sts. Turn. (6 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st.

Row 5: TOE – Ch 10, sl st in second ch from hk, turn, 2 sc in each of next 2 chs, 2 hdc in each of next 2 chs, dc in each of next 2 chs, tr in next 2 chs, tr in next 2 sts, tr2tog twice over last 4 sts. Turn. (1 slst, 4 sc, 4 hdc, 2 dc, 4 tr, 2 tr2tog)

Row 6: HEEL – ch 1, sc in same st and next 3 sts across. Turn. (4 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in last 2 sts.

Fasten off.

Shoe Buckle:

Row 1: With gold yarn, make a ch of 10, leave a tail for sewing.

Optional Add-On Pieces

Spider:

Rnd 1: With black thread, make an MR, make ch 1, 9 sc in MR. Join with a sl st to 1st st. (9 sc)

Rnd 2: *Ch 5, sc into 2nd ch and next 4 chs, sl st into next st on spider body. Repeat from * 3 more times, sc into spider body, then repeat from * 4 times, leave a long thread to attach. Fasten off. (35 sc)

Broom Handle:

Row 1:  With 2 strands of brown yarn, ch 25, sc in 2nd ch and remaining chs. Fasten off.

Broom Brush:

Row 1: Wrap 25-30 strands of tan yarn around 3 fingers, tie around the top about ¼” down and cut the bottom edges. Fasten off.

Assembly

  1. Sew motifs together per diagram.
  2. Sew hat band and buckle on crown.
  3. Sew hat brim to crown. When completely sewn together, *sl st into next st, ch 1. Repeat from * around entire hat.
  4. Fix the gold chain into a square buckle and sew to shoe.
  5. Sew each shoe to a leg, one on each side of one end of leg.
  6. Sew 2 legs to bottom of hat brim.
  7. Sew top of hat crown, one to each end of motif runner.
  8. Lay the broom on one side of the witch and fasten in one or two places.
  9. Attach the spider from one side of the witch’s hat to dangle about 3”.

Block entire piece using water, spray starch or your desired method.
