Lacy motifs make a romantic statement in this one-skein wrap. Motifs of different sizes create a wrap that hugs the shoulders and gives ample room for the upper arms. The floral motifs are connected by eight-pointed stars while open joins create lovely fluidity in the fabric.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Sizes: S/M, L/1X; S/M: 34” across Motifs A, 52” across Motifs B, L/1X: 40” across Motifs A, 58 1/2” across Motifs B; Length from neck edging to bottom point of Motif B = 10”
Gauge: Motif A = 4 1/2” diameter; Motif B = 6 1/2” diameter, after blocking
Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (100% merino; 420 yards [384 meters]/100 grams): Black Velvet (1 skein)
Hook: US size C/2 (2.75 mm) crochet hook
Triple treble (ttr): Yo 4 times, insert hook in designated st, yo and draw up loop, (yo, draw through 2 loops) 5 times.
Ttr3tog: Yo 4 times, insert hook in designated st, yo and draw up loop, (yo, draw through 2 loops) 4 times, yo, draw through all loops on hook.
Popcorn: Work 5 dc in designated st, remove hook from work, draw loose loop through top of first dc just made to close.
In Motif A, after making ch-5 at top of petal, work sl st in top of left-most dtr to center the ch-5, picking up any convenient strand.
In Motif B, rnd 3, when working into the base of chains, make sure to line up dc stitches with the 4th, 6th and 8th of the petal stitches – the base chain can be tricky to read. The dc sts should be symmetrical on right and left sides of each petal.
In last row of Motif B, the ch-5 points may appear to be slightly left of center. This will even out when joined and blocked.
Consult the photo to see how motifs are joined.
To connect any point on Motif A or B to another motif, work joining ch-5 as follows: ch 2, sl st to ch-5 on motif where you are joining, ch 2.
When joining Motifs, make sure they both have RS facing.
Motifs need to be wet blocked and pinned to lie flat. In this design, it’s easiest to block several at a time. After completing 7 Motifs A, block them. After working 7 Motifs B and 7 Star joins, block them; they will be attached to Motif A, but you can wet only Motif B and Star Joins. Then work the last Motifs A and B, and last Star Join, block them.
Make adjustable ring
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring, sl st to top of ch 3. (24 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, sc in each dc around.
Rnd 3: *Ch 9, working into next 3 sts, ttr3tog, ch 5, sl st to top of ttr3tog, ch 9, sl st to same sc as last ttr made; rep from * around. (8 petals)
Make 8 (9), always joining the last 2 ch-5 loops to 2 ch-5 loops at the side of previously made motif. The very last motif will be joined at both sides, so it connects with the first motif made.
Ch 8, sl st to close ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 23 dc in ring, sl st to top of ch 3. (24 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same dc, ch 12, turn, BLsc in 2nd ch from hook, BLsc in next ch, BLhdc in next 2 ch, BLdc in next 7 ch, sk 2 dc in Rnd 1, sc in next dc; rep from * 7 more times, sl st to top of starting sc. (8 Petals)
Rnd 3: (See Note above) Working into base of foundation chain of first petal, sl st over next 4 ch, ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), *(sk 1 ch, dc into next base ch) 3 times, sk 1 ch, continuing around, working into stitches of petal (dc, ch 2, dc) into ch-1 sp at side of first sc, ch 1, dc in 2nd sc, ch 1, sk next hdc, dc in next hdc, ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc**, (dc, ch 1) into base of 4th ch on next petal; rep from * 7 more times ending last rep at **, sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 4.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp next to sl st just made, *(ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp) 4 times, ch 5, sc in same ch-1 sp, (ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp) 4 times**, sc in first ch-1 sp on next petal; rep from * 7 more times, ending last rep at ** sl st to starting sc.
Make 8 (9), always joining at 4 points: 2 on Motif A above and 2 joins into the previously made Motif B at the side. The first Motif B will only be joined above. The last Motif B will be joined at 6 points, connecting at the side to the first motif B made. Do the last Motif B after working Joining Stars.
See closeup photo to clarify where to join.
Ch 5, sl st to close ring. Ch 1, sc in ring. *Ch 5, sl st to join above, ch 5, sc in ring, ch 9, sl st to next join, ch 9, sc, rep from * 4 times, joining at 8 points total. You can sl st into any strand that is convenient when making join.
Finishing – Neck Edging
Motifs A have 2 petals extending up toward the neck. Join yarn in the 2nd of these 2 at any Motif A.
Ch 5, Popcorn in first ch, *ch 7, Popcorn in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, sl st to ch-5 of next Motif A first petal, ch 5, Popcorn inserting hook in sl st and same ch-5 sp; rep from * around.
It’s not necessary to block this neck edging.
I have no photo or diagrams….is there a link to said items?
Can we see a photo of the scarf spread out? Also, a diagram would be nice.
Says see drawing, where is diagram?
There is a closeup photo of the wrap, showing the points and how they are joined. Please let us know if you need some additional clarification and we’ll work on another photo.
