Retro Bookstore Tee

Everything about this tee makes us fall back in love with the retro style of the 60s. The flutter sleeves, shaped waist and high lace neckline are irresistible. Really make this piece your own by working up the join-as-you-go motifs.

Between 2” negative ease and 2” positive ease recommended.

Shown in size Small.

Gauge: 20 dc and 15 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Double Crochet after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn:

Super fine weight yarn Fibra Natura Whisper Lace (70% Wool, 30% Silk; 440 yards [402 meters]/50 grams): 115 Mineral, 3 (3, 4, 4, 5, 5) balls

Hook: US size C/2 (2.75 mm); US Steel size 8

Notions: Tapestry needle; removable marker; 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6) 3/8” buttons

This tee is worked in pieces and seamed.

Special Stitches

Split DC

Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as dc), (2 dc between next 2 dc) to last dc, dc in last dc, turn.

Rep Row 1 for patt.

Beg Cl: Ch 3, (yo, insert hook into sp indicated and pull up lp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) twice, yo, pull through rem lps on hook.

Cl: (YO, insert hook into sp indicated, pull up lp, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) 3 times, yo, pull through rem lps on hook.

Flower Motif

With smaller hook, ch 6, join with sl st to beg ch to form ring.

Rnd 1: Beg Cl, (ch 4, tr in ring, ch 4, CL in ring) 3 times, ch 4, tr in ring, ch 4, join with sl st to top of Beg Cl. Fasten off.

After the first full Flower Motif is made, join remaining Flower Motifs by working sl st after tr to corresponding trs from adjacent Motifs.

Half Flower Motif

With smaller hook, ch 5, join with sl st to beg ch to form ring.

Ch 4 (counts as tr), [sl st in corresponding tr of adjacent Motif, ch 4, Cl in ring, ch 4, tr in ring, sl st in corresponding tr of adjacent Motif) twice. Fasten off.

Fourth Flower Motif

With smaller hook, ch 4, join with sl st to beg ch to form ring.

Ch 4 (counts as tr), sl st in corresponding tr of adjacent Motif, ch 4, Cl in ring, ch 4, tr in ring, sl st in corresponding tr of adjacent Motif. Fasten off.

With larger hook, ch 90 (98, 106, 118, 126, 138).

Row 1: Hdc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn – 89 (97, 105, 117, 125, 137) dc. Row 2: Ch 2, sk next hdc, (2 dc in next hdc, sk next hdc) to last hdc, dc in last hdc, turn – 88 (96, 104, 116, 124, 136) dc.

Waist Decrease

Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as dc), dc between next 2 dc, work in patt to last 3 dc, dc between next 2 dc, dc in last dc, turn – 86 (94, 102, 114, 122, 134) dc.

Dec Row: Ch 2, dc2tog, work in patt to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in last dc, turn – 2 sts dec’d.

Rep Dec Row every row 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 7) more times – 68 (76, 82, 90, 98, 104) sts.

Work even in patt for 22 (24, 26, 27, 28, 27) more rows – 28 (30, 32, 34, 35, 36) total Armhole rows.

Fasten off.

Front

Work as for Back through Row 10 of Waist Increase section – 88 (96, 104, 116, 124, 136) dc. Work even in patt for 0 (2, 6, 1, 4, 5) rows.

Shape Left Front

Read through remainder of Left Front instructions before proceeding.

Place a removable marker or safety pin in the center set of 2 dc, the 22nd (24th, 26th, 29th, 31st, 34th) set from the edge of the piece.

Row 1: Work in patt to 1 set of dc before marked set, dc between next 2 dc, dc2tog (first leg in same sp as previous dc and last leg between next (center) 2 dc, turn.

Row 2: Ch 2, sk next dc, work in patt to end – 1 st dec’d.

Rows 3-4: Dec 1 st at Neck edge.

Row 5: Work even in patt with no decs.

Rows 6-9: Dec 1 st at Neck edge each row.

Row 10: Work even in patt.

Rows 11-20: Rep Rows 6-10 twice.

Rows 21-22: Dec 1 st at Neck edge each row.

Sizes 1X (2X, 3X) only

Rows 23-24: Dec 1 st at Neck edge each row –

All Sizes

AT THE SAME TIME, after 50 (50, 54, 54, 58, 58) total Split DC rows have been worked, shape Armhole as for Back.

After all Neck and Armhole shaping is complete, 16 (20, 23, 25, 29, 32) dc rem.

After Neck shaping is complete, work even until 28 (30, 32, 34, 35, 36) total Armhole rows have been worked.

Fasten off.

Shape Right Front

Attach yarn with sl st between same dc as last st worked from Row 1 of Shape Left Front.

Row 1: Ch 2, work in patt to end.

Row 2: Work in patt to last 2 dc, dc in last dc, turn

– 1 st dec’d.

Rows 3-4: Dec 1 st at Neck edge.

Row 5: Work even in patt with no decs.

Rows 6-9: Dec 1 st at Neck edge each row.

Row 10: Work even in patt.

Rows 11-20: Rep Rows 6-10 twice.

Rows 21-22: Dec 1 st at Neck edge each row.

Sizes 1X (2X, 3X) only

Rows 23-24: Dec 1 st at Neck edge each row –

18 (18, 18, 20, 20, 20) sts dec’d at Neck.

All Sizes

AT THE SAME TIME, after 50 (50, 54, 54, 58, 58) total Split DC rows have been worked, shape Armhole as for Back.

After all Neck and Armhole shaping is complete, 16 (20, 23, 25, 29, 32) dc rem.

After Neck shaping is complete, work even until 28 (30, 32, 34, 35, 36) total Armhole rows have been worked.

Fasten off.

Front Yoke

With smaller hook, make and assemble 54 (54, 54, 73, 73, 73) Flower Motifs, 10 (10, 10, 24, 24, 24) Half Motifs, and 2 (2, 2, 0, 0, 0) Fourth Motifs, using Yoke diagram as a guide.

Finishing

Block pieces to finished measurements.

Sew Front Yoke to Front, tacking down only the joining points between Motifs to Front.

Sew Left Shoulder seam, easing Front shoulder to Back.

Sew Right Shoulder seam along 8 (10, 12, 13, 15, 16) Back sts and Front 16 (20, 23, 25, 29, 32) sts, leaving 1.5 (1.5, 1.5. 1,75, 1.75, 1.75) Front Motifs unsewn.

Leave 4 (4, 4, 4½, 4½, 4½) Motifs unsewn for Front Neck and 36 (36, 36, 40, 40, 40) sts unsewn for Back Neck. Sew side seams.

Armhole Edging

Attach yarn with sl st to center of underarm using larger hook.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 85 (91, 97, 103, 109, 115) sc evenly around armhole opening, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Sc in first sc, (ch 3, sk next 2 sc, Cl in next sc, ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc) to end, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), (ch 3, sc in Cl, ch 3, Cl in sc) to last Cl, ch 3, sc in Cl, ch 3, dc in last sc, turn.

Row 4: Sc in same sc, (ch 3, Cl in sc, ch 3, sc in Cl) to last sc, ch 3, Cl in sc, ch 3, sc in last dc, turn.

Rows 5-10: Rep Rows 3-4, 3 more times.

Fasten off.

Neck Edging

Attach yarn with sl st to right side of Neck using larger hook.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 36 (36, 36, 39, 39, 39) sc evenly along Back Neck edge, 37 (37, 37, 40, 40, 40) sc evenly along Front Neck edge and 4 (4, 4, 4½, 4½, 4½) Motifs, turn – 73 (73, 73, 79, 79, 79) sc.

Row 2 (WS): Sc in first sc, (ch 3, sk next 2 sc, Cl in next sc, ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc) to end, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), (ch 3, sc in Cl, ch 3, Cl in sc) to last Cl, ch 3, sc in Cl, ch 3, dc in last sc, turn.

Row 4: Sc in same sc, (ch 3, Cl in sc, ch 3, sc in Cl) to last sc, ch 3, Cl in sc, ch 3, sc in last dc, turn.

Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 3-4 twice more.

Rotate work 90 degrees, do not fasten off.

Button Loops

All Sizes

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, work 10 sc along side of Neck Edging, 8 (10, 12, 13, 15, 16) sc along unsewn edge of Back Neck, 8 (10, 12, 13, 15, 16) sc along unsewn edge of Front Neck Motifs, and 10 sc along other side of Neck Edging, turn – 36 (40, 44, 46, 50, 52) sc.

Sizes Small (Medium, Large) only

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, (ch 6, sl st in sc just made (button loop made), sc in next 3 sc) twice, ch 6, sl st in sc just made, sc in next 4 sc, ch 6, sl st in sc just made, sc in next 4 (5, 6) sc, ch 6, sl st in sc just made, sc in rem sc along Neck to top of Neck edging – 5 button loops. Fasten off.

Sizes 1X (2X, 3X) only

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, (ch 6, sl st in sc just made (button loop made), sc in next 3 sc) twice, ch 6, sl st in sc just made, sc in next 4 sc, (ch 6, sl st in sc just made, sc in next 4 (5, 6) sc) twice, ch 6, sl st in sc just made, sc in rem sc along Neck to top of Neck edging – 6 button loops.

Fasten off.

 

Block Armhole and Neck Edgings.

Sew buttons to Neck Edging opposite Buttonholes. Weave in ends. yarn ball
