Pattern Notes

For every 1st double crochet of each round, I suggest using chainless starting double crochet technique or ch 2 then make a double crochet into same stitch (counted as 1st dc). So in the pattern below you’ll see I simply state dc (double crochet) instead of ch 3 for every 1st double of each round.

Pattern

Start with color A yarn.
Rnd 1: Form a magic ring or ch 2, crochet 10 dc into the ring, sl into 1st st to join. (10 sts)
Rnd 2: Inc dc x 10 times, sl into 1st st to join. (20 sts)
Rnd 3: (inc dc, dc) x 10 times, sl into 1st st to join. (30 sts)
Rnd 4: (inc dc, 2 dc) x 10 times, sl into 1st st to join. (40 sts)
Rnd 5: (inc dc, 3 dc) x 10 times, sl into 1st st to join. (50 sts)
Rnd 6: Change to color B yarn, (inc dc, 4 dc) x 10 times, sl into 1st st to join. (60 sts)
Rnd 7: Change to color A yarn, ( dc, fpdc) x 30 times, sl into 1st st to join. (60 sts)
Rnd 8: Dc around. (60 sts)
Rnd 9: Change to color B yarn, (sc, make a tc under the fpdc of Rnd 7) x 30 times, sl into 1st st to join. (60 sts)

Earflaps (Make 2)

Rnd 1: From last stitch of Rnd 15, crochet 12 dc across. (12 sts)
Rnd 2: Turn, 12 dc. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Turn, 12 dc. (12 sts)
Rnd 4: Turn, hdc into next st, 8 dc, hdc into last st. (10 sts)
Crochet the second one on the opposite side.
Hdc around the hat with color B yarn.
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Straps (Make 2)

With color B yarn, crochet a chain of 31, hdc into 2nd chain from hook, hdc across, crochet 2 hdc into last st, hdc across, sl into 1st st to join.
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Finishing

Place straps on earflaps, sew buttons on. Make a pompom with color B yarn and attach to top of the hat.
