Rocketman Bag

Get ready for lift-off! The Rocketman Bag is a handy little tote that will travel across space with your child, carrying all the supplies they need for adventures galore.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Top of rocket to bottom: 13.5”; Width: 9”

Gauge: 15 sts and 19 rows in sc = 3” square 

Materials

Yarn: Vanna’s Choice (100% acrylic; 170 yards [156 meters]/100 grams): Black (A, 1 skein), Silver Heather (B, 2 skeins), Cranberry (C, 1 skein), White (D, 1 skein), Yellow (E, 1 skein), Light Blue (F, 1 skein)
Hook: US size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Yarn needle 

Pattern Notes

The bag is made from the bottom up.
The windows, pockets and handle are all made separately and then sewn onto the bag with the yarn needle.

Pattern

Using Color A, ch 31.
Row 1: Turn, sc in first chain from hook and in each across. (30 sts)
Rows 2-6: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch. (30 sts)
Rnd 7: Turn, ch 1, sc 6 down the short side, sc 30 across long edge, sc 6 across opposite short side, sc 30 along opposite long edge, sl st to first stitch to join. (72 sts)
Rnds 8-10: Ch 1, sc 72, sl st to first stitch to join. (72 sts)
Join Color B, fasten off Color A.
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in each stitch, do not join. (72 sts)
Rnds 12-38: Working in the round, sc in each stitch. (72 sts)
Row 39: (Note: This creates the top of the rocket. You will work half, fasten off, and then work the opposite side). Turn, ch 1, sc 30.
Row 40: Turn, ch 1, sc 30.
Row 41: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 24, sc dec, sc. (28 sts)
Row 42: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 43: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 22, sc dec, sc. (26 sts)
Row 44: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 45: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 20, sc dec, sc. (24 sts)
Join Color C, fasten off Color A.
Row 46: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 47: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 18, sc dec, sc. (22 sts)
Join Color D, fasten off Color C.
Row 48: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 49: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 16, sc dec, sc. (20 sts)
Row 50: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 51: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 14, sc dec, sc. (18 sts)
Join Color C, fasten off Color D.
Row 52: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 53: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 12, sc dec, sc. (16 sts)
Join Color D, fasten off Color C.
Row 54: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 55: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 10, sc dec, sc. (14 sts)
Row 56: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 57: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 8, sc dec, sc. (12 sts)
Row 58: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 6, sc dec, sc. (10 sts)
Row 59: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 4, sc dec, sc. (8 sts)
Row 60: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc 2, sc dec, sc. (6 sts)
Row 61: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec 2 times, sc. (4 sts)
Row 62: Turn, (no ch 1), sc dec 2 times. (2 sts)
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Top: Side 2

Row 39: Locate stitch 30 of Row 39 from Top Side 1, skip 6 stitches, join Color B in the next stitch, ch 1, sc 30.
Repeat Rows 40-62 to complete Side 2.

Bag Trim

Join Color B at lower right Top Side 1, ch 1, using the ends of rows as stitches, sc around rocket top, sc 6 on one bag side, sc around top side 2, sc 6, sl st to first stitch to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Long Window

Using Color E, ch 6.
Row 1: Turn, sc in first chain from hook and in each across. (5 sts)
Rows 2-16: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch. (5 sts)
Row 17: Turn, sc dec, sc, sc dec. (3 sts)
Rnd 18: (Trim) Using the ends of rows as stitches, ch 1, crochet down the long side, sc in each stitch with 3 sc in each corner, sl st to first stitch to join.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Using yarn needle, sew onto center body of bag.

Large Round Window

Using Color E, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in first chain, sl st to first stitch to join. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch. (12 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Using yarn needle, sew above long window.

Small Round Window

Using Color E, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in first chain, sl st to first stitch to join. (6 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Using yarn needle, sew above large round window.

Window Detail

After sewing the windows onto bag, using yarn needle and Color A, sew in and out of the last row to give the windows detail.

Flame (Make Two)

Using Color C, ch2.
Rnd 1: 3 sc in first chain. (3 sts)
Rnd 2: Working in the round, 2 sc in each stitch. (6 sts)
Rnd 3: * sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete the round. (9 sts)
Rnd 4: * sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete the round. (12 sts)
Rnd 5: * sc 3, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete the round. (15 sts)
Rnds 6-8: Sc in each stitch. To finish, sl st to the first stitch of last round.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Boosters (Side Pockets – Make Two)

Using Color B, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in first chain (do not join). (6 sts)
Row 2: Working in the round, 2 sc in the next FOUR stitches (leave 2 stitches unworked). (8 sts)
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, * sc, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete row. (12 sts)
Row 4: Turn, ch 1, * sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete row. (16 sts)
Row 5: Turn, ch 1, * sc 3, 2sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete row. (20 sts)
Row 6: Turn, ch 1, working in back loop only, sc 20. (20 sts) 
Rows 7-20: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch. (20 sts)
Join Color A, drop Color B.
Row 21: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch. (20 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Using yarn needle, sew flame onto bottom.
Then, sew onto side of bag. Line up with the 6 open stitches per side so that the pockets stand out.
TIP: Start by sewing onto the bottom and then the 2 sides.

Handle

Using Color F, ch 8.
Row 1: Turn, sc in first stitch and in each across. (7 sts)
Rows 2-40: Turn, ch 1, sc 7. (7 sts)
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Using yarn needle, sew down into the rocket top on Row 54 last color change. Use the white so that the sewing lines do not show on the rocket. Secure firmly. Then, use the gray and sc around the edge so that the rocket top holds shape and helps support the handle. Do this on both sides.
Tip: I secured the handle as much as I could. It helps secure the handle and gives strength to the length of the handle. I stitched in a box, and then when I secured with the gray, it helped support the top of the rocket. Weave in ends.
