V is for Victory Tote

This V-stitch crochet bag in vintage-inspired patriotic colors is perfect for toting anywhere you go: the beach, the park, the carnival, the store and even your favorite fireworks display. The V-stitch pattern makes it expandable and breathable, so you can take everything you need in style.

Materials

Yarn: Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton (100% cotton; 99 yards [90 meters]/57 grams): Hot Pepper (A, 2 skeins), Vanilla (B, 1 skein), Blueberry (C, 2 skeins)
Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook
Notions: 2 Star Shaped Buttons, 4 Stitch Markers

Special Stitches

v-st: (dc, ch 1, dc) in the indicated st or ch sp.

Pattern

Note that this pattern starts in rows and moves to rounds.
Row 1: With Color A, ch 40, dc in 3rd ch from hook and each remaining ch to end; turn. (38 sts)
Rows 2-3: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each st across; turn. (38 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in each st across, continuing on to the ends of Rows 1-3, dc 6 sts along the side, dc 38 sts along the opposite side of the starting ch, dc 6 sts in the other end of Rows 1-3; join to st with sl st to work in the rnd. (88 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), dc in 1st st, skip next st, *v-st in next st, skip next st; repeat from * to end of rnd, join with sl st in ch-4 sp. (44 v-sts)
Rnds 6-8: Ch 4, dc in ch-4 sp of previous rnd, v-st in each ch-1 sp around; join with sl st in ch-4 sp. Break yarn after Rnd 8. (44 v-sts)
Rnd 9: With Color B, join to any ch- sp, ch 4, dc in same ch-1 sp, v-st in each ch-1 sp around; join with sl st in ch-4 sp. (44 v-sts)
Rnds 10-11: Ch 4, dc in ch-4 sp of previous rnd, v-st in each ch-1 sp around; join with sl st in ch-4 sp. Break yarn after last rnd. (44 v-sts)
Rnds 12-14: With Color A, repeat Rnds 9-11.
Rnds 15-17: With Color B, repeat Rnds 9-11.
Rnds 18-20: With Color A, repeat Rnds 9-11.
Rnd 21: With Color C, repeat Rnd 9.
Rnds 22-28: Repeat Rnd 10, do not break yarn.
Rnd 29: Ch 2, dc 2 in each ch-1 sp around; join with sl st in 1st st. Place stitch markers in sts #9, 32, 53, and 76. Lay the bag flat and make sure the st markers line up; adjust as needed. (88 sts)
Rnd 30: Ch 2, dc in first 9 sts or to first st marker, ch 30, skip 22 sts, dc in next 22 sts (from the 2nd st marker to the 3rd st marker), ch 30, skip 22 sts, dc in the last 13 sts (from the 4th st marker to the end of the rnd); join with a sl st in 1st st. (104 sts including chs)
Rnds 31-32: Ch 2, dc in each st and ch around; join with a sl st in 1st st. (104 sts)
Rnd 33: Sl st in each st around; break yarn and weave in ends.

Drawstring

With Color B, ch for 48”, break yarn. Weave cord through Round 29. Add star shaped buttons to ends of drawstring. yarn ball
