Sweetwater Cowl

The self-striping yarn does all the work as you create the peaks and valleys of this easy ripple pattern. Seam the short ends, nestling the peaks into the valleys for a continuous loop.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Approximately 5½” wide x 32” circumference

Gauge: 16 sts and 8 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern

Materials

Yarn: Berroco Folio Color (65% Superfine Alpaca, 35% Rayon; 219 yards [200 meters]/50 grams): #4595 Harpswell (1 ball)

Hook: US size G/6 (4.25 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Dc dec (double crochet decrease)

Worked over 5 chs or sts: (Yo, insert hook in next ch or st, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps, sk next ch or ch-1 sp] 3 times, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked back and forth in rows, widthwise, then joined in the round by seaming foundation ch to final row.

Pattern

Ch 36.
Row 1: Work 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, *(ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch) twice, ch 1, sk next ch, dc dec over next 5 chs, (ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch) twice, ch 1, sk next ch**, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch; rep from * to **, ending with 3 dc in final ch. (18 dc, 2 dc dec, 13 ch-1 sps)

Row 2: Turn, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same place, *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc dec, (ch 1, dc in next dc) twice, ch 1**, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * to **, ending 3 dc in top of turning ch.
Rows 3-62: Rep Row 2.
Fasten off leaving an 18” tail for seaming.

Taking care to not twist work, using tapestry needle and ending tail, mattress stitch Row 62 to foundation ch.

Weave in ends.

Border

Join yarn with sl st in end of any row, *ch 3, (yo, pull up a lp in same place, yo, draw through 2 lps) twice, yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook, sl st in end of next row; rep from * around, ending join with sl st in same place as beg sl st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat for second edge.

Finishing

Block lightly.
