Guava Beginner Beanie 

This is an easy crocheted hat project geared toward beginner crocheters. The bottom edge is a double ribbing double crochet and the body is worked in single crochet and chains. Get ready for chilly weather with this trendy and easy hat!

Skill Level: Beginner

Size: 22” circumference

Gauge: 15 sts and 25 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc for Body of the hat pattern after wet blocking

Materials

Fine weight yarnYarn: Kraemer Yarns Perfection Sport (70% Acrylic, 30% Wool; 400 yards [366 meters]/100 grams): 3301 Bloom (1, ball)

Hook: US size E/4 (3.5 mm)

Notions: Removable markers

Special Stitches

BPdc (back post double crochet): Dc around the dc on rnd below from the back.

FPdc (front post double crochet): Dc around the dc on rnd below from the front.

Pattern Notes

When you start working on the body part of the hat, mark the beginning of the round and work in a spiral.

Pattern

Ch 148. Make a ring with sl st into the first ch. Make sure the ch is not twisted.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, dc in every ch around.

Rnds 2-7: Ch 2, BPdc in next dc, *FPdc in next 2 dc, BPdc in next 2 dc; rep from * around, ending with FPdc in last 2 dc, sl st into the top of the 2nd ch.

Rnd 8: Ch 2 (count as sc, ch 1), sc in same st, (ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st) 36 times, ch 1, sc in same st, (ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st) to end of rnd, ch 1, sc into the first ch. Mark the first st. (75 sc)

Rnds 9-40: *Ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around.

Crown

Rnd 41: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 14 ch-1 sp; rep around. (70 sc)

Rnd 42: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 13 ch-1 sp; rep around. (65 sc)

Rnd 43: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 12 ch-1 sp; rep around. (60 sc)

Rnd 44: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 11 ch-1 sp; rep around. (55 sc)

Rnd 45: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1-sp, ch 1, sc in next 10 ch-1 sp; rep around. (50 sc)

Rnd 46: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 9 ch-1 sp; rep around. (45 sc)

Rnd 47: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 8 ch-1 sp; rep around. (40 sc)

Rnd 48: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 7 ch-1 sp; rep around. (35 sc)

Rnd 49: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 6 ch-1 sp; rep around. (30 sc)

Rnd 50: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 5 ch-1 sp; rep around. (25 sc)

Rnd 51: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 4 ch-1 sp; rep around. (20 sc)

Rnd 52: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 3 ch-1 sp; rep around. (15 sc)

Rnd 53: *Ch 1, sk next 2 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next 2 ch-1 sp; rep around. (10 sc)

Rnd 54: Ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp. (2 sc)

Top of Hat

Ch 10, turn, sc in each and every 9 ch. Hold the end in left hand and sl st into the first ch. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Block hat to size.

    Hi Michelle,
    Yes, 148 stitches are correct. First, the yarn is sports weight, so it needs to have more stitches than worsted weight. Second, the instructions begin with ribbing which contracts in, therefore, it needs more stitches to accommodate the head circumference.

    Crochet chain always stretches out more than a finished project. You cannot judge the width/circumference of the project with just one row of chains. If you work a few rounds in ribbing, as instructed, you will notice that the work will pull in considerably and will fit one’s head. Hope this helps.     I am confused. Chaining 148 stitches would fit me and my husband. Am I reading this wrong?
