Yuletide Hat

This fresh version of the Fireplace Hat is a must have! Worked vertically it allows for great stretch, while short rows help reduce bulk. There are two sets of cables worked in the middle of this hat is easy to customize for larger or smaller head circumferences with simple addition or subtraction of rows. It is freshly updated with a simple pom-pom and a beautiful new colorway. This is a project that speaks perfectly to the approaching cold weather.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Approximately 7” tall x 21” in circumference

Gauge: 16 sts and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm]

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Malabrigo Washted medium weight (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 210 yards [192 meters]/100 grams): #886 Diana, 1 skein

Hook: US size K/10½ (6.5 mm)

Special Stitches

Back Loop Single Crochet (blsc): Working in loop furthest from facing, insert hook, yo, pull through a lp, yo, pull through lps (single crochet created).

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert hook from front to back and then to front again around post of st, yo, draw up lp, (yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) twice.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked vertically (up and down), then seamed together and the top is closed.

The last row will work the cables around each other to help continue the twisted appearance, no other stitches are worked together in this row.

Pattern

Ch 31.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 24 ch, leaving rem 5 ch unworked, turn – 25 sc.
Row 2:
Ch 1, blsc in each st across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, blsc in next 10 sts, (working around sts 2 rows below, sk next st, fpdc around next 2 sts, fpdc around skipped st) twice, blsc in next 9 sts, sc in unworked ch sts from Row 1, turn – 15 blsc, 6 fpdc, 5 sc.

Row 4: Rep Row 2.

Row 5: Ch 1, blsc in next 10 sts, (working around sts 2 rows below, sk next st, fpdc around next 2 sts, fpdc around skipped st) twice, blsc in next 9 sts, leave remaining sts unworked, turn – 15 blsc, 6 fpdc.

Row 6: Rep Row 2.

Row 7: Ch 1, blsc in next 10 sts, (working around sts 2 rows below, sk next st, fpdc around next 2 sts, fpdc around skipped st) twice, blsc in next 9 sts, sc in unworked sts from 2 rows below, turn – 15 blsc, 6 fpdc, 5 sc.

Rows 8-79: Rep Rows 4-7, 16 times.

Rows 80-82: Rep Rows 4-6.

Row 83: Ch 1, blsc in next 10 sts, (remove hook from lp, insert hook behind first post stitch in Row 3, pull loop around st, working around sts 2 rows below sk next st, fpdc around next st, remove hook from lp, insert hook behind first post stitch in Row 3, pull loop around st, fpdc around next st, remove hook from lp, insert hook behind first post stitch in Row 3, pull lp around st, fpdc around skipped st) twice, blsc in next 9 sts, sc in unworked sts from 2 rows below, turn – 15 blsc, 6 fpdc, 5 sc.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to seam.

Finishing

Seam Row 83 to beginning ch, working behind post stitches (cables).

At top of hat, this is the end that stitches were left unworked in fabric, weave yarn through every other row and pull taunt, closing top of hat.

Make a 2 ½” pom-pom

Weave in all ends.
