Amethyst Lace Cardigan

Cozy is the name of the game in this versatile cardigan. A generous ribbed collar can be secured at the lower edge with buttons as shown, or left unbuttoned so you use a shawl pin closure. Most pieces of this cardigan are worked in half double crochet ribbing, creating flattering vertical lines.

Gauge: 15 sts and 11 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Hdc Ribbing after wet blocking

Yarn:

Light Weight Yarn Universal Yarn Amphora (60% Acrylic, 20% Alpaca, 20% Mohair; 306 yards [280 meters]/100 grams): 104 Dusky, 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) balls

Hook: US size 7 (4.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, two 1” buttons

Special Stitches

Shell (Sh): (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in st indicated.

 

Shells Lace (begins with multiple of 6 + 4 chs)

Row 1: Sc in 4th ch from hook, *sk 2 ch, Sh in next ch, sk 2 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch; rep from * to last 6 ch, sk 2 ch, Sh in next ch, sk 2 ch, (sc, ch 1, hdc) in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in hdc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp, Sh in ch-3 sp; rep from * to last ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp, 3 dc in third ch of beg ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch-1), sc in first dc, *Sh in ch-3 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * to last ch-3 sp, Sh in last ch-3 sp, (sc, ch 1, hdc) in top of beg ch, turn.

Rep Rows 2-3 for patt.

 

Hdc Ribbing (any number of sts)

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in blo of each hdc across, turn.

Rep Row 2 for patt.

Pattern Notes

This cardigan is worked in pieces and seamed. The Back is worked from the center out to the Sleeve Cuffs. The Sleeves are also worked from the center Back out to the Sleeve Cuffs. Fronts are worked from the center out to the Sleeve Cuffs.

Right Sleeve

Ch 12, fasten off, set aside.

Ch 16.

Row 1 (WS): Working through top lp of each ch, work Row 1 of Shells Lace patt.

Work Rows 2-3 of Shell Lace patt 3 times. Piece meas about 3½”.

Increase for Shoulder

Next Row (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in hdc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp, Sh in ch-3 sp; rep from * to last ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp, Sh in 3rd ch of beg ch; working onto reserved ch 12, sk first 2 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, sk 2 ch, Sh in next ch, sk 2 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, sk 2 ch, 3 dc in last ch, turn – 3 Sh, 4 ch-3 sps.

Work Row 3 of Shells Lace patt, then rep Rows 2-3 of patt until piece meas 24½ (25½, 26½, 27½, 28½, 29½)” from beg, ending with Row 2 of patt.

Next Row (RS): Ch 1, sc in first dc, *ch 2, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp; rep from * to last ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc in last ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Left Sleeve

With WS facing, attach yarn with sl st to right-most ch of beg-ch from Right Sleeve.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 3, sc in same ch, *sk 2 ch, Sh in next ch, sk 2 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch; rep from * to last 6 ch, sk 2 ch, Sh in next ch, sk 2 ch, (sc, ch 1, hdc) in last ch, turn.

Work Rows 2-3 of Shell Lace patt 3 times. Piece meas about 3½”.

Increase for Shoulder

Row 1 (RS): Ch 14, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, sk next 2 chs, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, sk next 2 chs, Sh in next ch, [sk next 2 chs, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, sk last 2 chs, Sh in hdc, [sc, ch 3, sc] in next ch-2 sp, Sh in next ch-3 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-2 sp, 3 dc in top of beg ch-3, turn – 3 Sh, 4 ch-3 sps.

Complete remainder of Left Sleeve as for Right Sleeve.

Right Back

Ch 82 (84, 86, 88, 90, 92) sts.

Row 1: Working through top lp of each ch, work Row 1 of Hdc Ribbing – 81 (83, 85, 87, 89, 91) hdc.

Work Row 2 of Hdc Ribbing until piece meas 8½ (9½, 10½, 11½, 12½, 13½)” from beg.

Break yarn, turn at the end of the last row.

Shape Sleeve

Skip next 71 sts, attach yarn to next st with sl st.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc in blo of same st and each st to end, turn – 10 (12, 14, 16, 18, 20) hdc. Work 9 (5, 5, 5, 5, 5) more rows even in patt.

Dec Row (RS): Ch 1, hdc in blo of first hdc, hdc2tog in blo, work in patt to end, turn – 1 st dec’d. Rep Dec Row every other RS row 7 (7, 6, 4, 3, 1) more time(s), then rep Dec Row every RS row 0 (2, 4, 8, 10, 14) more times – 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) sts.

Fasten off.

Left Back

With WS of Right Back facing, join yarn with sl st to right edge of beg-ch.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, hdc in each unworked lp of beg-ch from Right Back, turn – 81 (83, 85, 87, 89, 91) hdc. Rep Row 2 of Hdc Ribbing until piece meas 81/2 (91/2, 101/2, 111/2, 121/2, 131/2)” from beg, having worked same number of rows as for Right Back.

Shape Sleeve

Row 1 (RS): Work Row 2 of Hdc Ribbing over first 10 (12, 14, 16, 18, 20) hdc, turn, leaving rem 71 sts unworked.

Work 9 (5, 5, 5, 5, 5) more rows even in patt.

Dec Row (RS): Work in patt to last 3 hdc, hdc2tog in blo, hdc in blo of last st, turn – 1 st dec’d.

Rep Dec Row every other RS row 7 (7, 6, 4, 3, 1) more time(s), then rep Dec Row every RS row 0 (2, 4, 8, 10, 14) more times – 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) sts.

Row 1 (RS): Work Row 2 of Hdc Ribbing over first 10 (12, 14, 16, 18, 20) hdc, turn, leaving rem 71 sts unworked.

Work 9 (5, 5, 5, 5, 5) more rows even in patt.

Dec Row (RS): Work in patt to last 3 hdc, hdc2tog in blo, hdc in blo of last st, turn – 1 st dec’d.

Collar

Ch 218 (222, 226, 230, 234, 238) sts.

Row 1: Working through top lp of each ch, work Row 1 of Hdc Ribbing – 217 (221, 225, 229, 233, 237) hdc.

Rep Row 2 of Hdc Ribbing until piece meas 8½”. Fasten off.

Finishing

Block pieces to finished measurements. Sew back and fronts to sleeves, using diagram as a guide. Sew sleeve and side seams. Sew beg-ch edge of Collar to front opening of assembled cardigan. Steam seams. Fold back lower edges of Collar and sew a button through both Collar layers to secure.

Weave in ends.
