Librarian’s Favorite Sweater

This beautiful cardigan is worked from one cuff to the other. It follows a wonderful textured pattern that creates vertical stripes for a flattering look.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizes:
Small-Medium: 40” to fit bust size 34-38”, 25” total length, 10” armhole depth
Large-1X: 46” to fit bust size 40-44”, 26” total length, 11” armhole depth
2X: 50” to fit bust size 46-52”, 27” total length, 12” armhole depth
Sleeve Length to underarm: 20″

Gauge: 20 sc= 4″ (10 cm) with size F hook or size to obtain gauge

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Luster Sheen (100% acrylic; 307 yards [281 meters]/100 grams): #805 Natural (8 (9, 10) balls)
Hook: US size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook
Notions: Tapestry needle, 6- 18 mm (11/16″) buttons by dill-buttons

Special Stitches

Bdc: From back, dc around the pole of the dc on previous row.
Fdc: From front, dc around the pole of the dc on previous row.
2dc-cluster: (Wrap yarn around hook, insert hook into next st, wrap yarn around hook, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook) twice, wrap yarn around hook, pull through all loops on hook. (Make 1 sts out of 2)
Beg-2dc-cluster: Ch 2, dc in next st. (Make 1 st out of 2)
Dsc (Decrease sc, making 1 sc out of 2 sc): (Insert hook into the next sc, wrap yarn around hook pull through) twice, wrap yarn around hook and pull through all loops on hook.

Ribbing Pattern
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each and every ch across. Turn.
Rows 2-4: Ch 2 (count as fdc), * bdc in next dc, fdc in next dc; repeat from *. End with bdc in last ch3.

Textured Pattern
Row 1: Ch 1 (count as sc), sc in every st across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in every sc across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in next sc, * skip next 3 sc, tr in next sc, from the back of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from *. End with dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in next dc, * skip next 3 dc, tr in next st, from the front of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from *. End with dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn.

Pattern Notes

This design is worked in sections, beginning from the right sleeve cuff to the left sleeve cuff.
Read pattern instructions before beginning, making sure to note size.

Pattern

Right Sleeve for All Sizes

Ch 46 (50, 54).
Rows 1-4: Work as Ribbing pattern. (44 (48, 52) dc)
Rows 5-8: Work as Textured pattern, once.

Increase Section

Rows 9-10: Ch 1, sc in every st across. Turn.
Row 11: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in same sc, 2 dc in next sc, * skip next 3 sc, tr in next sc, from the back of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from *. End with 2 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (48 (52, 56) dc)
Row 12: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in same dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 sts, * skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, from the front of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from * until 4 dc remain. End with dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (52 (56, 60) dc)
Rows 13-36: Repeat rows 9-12, 6 times. (100 (104, 108) sts at the end of row 36)
Rows 37-44: Work as Textured pattern, twice.
Rows 45-48: Repeat rows 9-12, once. (108 (112, 116) sts at the end of row 48)
Rows 49-64: Work as Textured pattern, 4 times. Do not turn.

Body Panel

At the end of row 64, ch 73 for body. Turn.
Row 1: Work as row 1 of Textured pattern then ch 73. Turn.
Row 2: Work as row 2 of Textured pattern in all sts. Turn. (252 (256, 260) sts)
Rows 3-4: Work as row 3-4 of Textured pattern.

For Size Small-Medium Only

Rows 5-24: Work as Textured pattern, 5 times.

For Sizes Large-1X, 2X Only

Rows 5-28: Work as Textured pattern, 6 times.

Right Front Panel – For Sizes Small-Medium, Large-1X Only

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 82 sts. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in every sc across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in next sc, * skip next 3 sc, tr in next sc, from the back of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from * until last 4 sts. End with (2 dc-cluster in next 2 sts) twice. Turn. (80 sts)
Row 4: Beg-2dc-cluster in next 2 sts, * skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, from the front of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from *. End with dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (79 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in every st until last 2 dc, skip next dc, sc in beg-2dc-cluster. Turn. (78 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in every sc across. Turn.

For Size 2X Only

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 86 sts. Turn.

Back Panel

Row 1: Skip next 50 sts. Attach yarn to the next st, work as row 1 of Textured pattern. (120 (124, 124) sc)
Rows 2-4: Work as rows 2-4 of Textured pattern.

For Sizes Small-Medium, Large-1X Only

Rows 5-20: Work as Textured pattern, 5 times. Fasten off at the end of row 20.

For Size 2X Only

Rows 5-24: Work as Textured pattern, 7 times. Fasten off at the end of row 24.

Left Front Panel

Ch 70.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in every ch across. Turn. (70 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in every sc across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in next sc, * skip next 3 sc, tr in next sc, from the back of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from * until last sc, 2dc in last sc. (71 sts)

Body Panel

Row 1: At the end of last row of left front panel, ch 50 then join to the neck side of the back panel. Sc in every st of the last row of back panel. Turn. (252 (256, 260) sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in every st across. Turn.
Rows 3-4: Work as rows 3-4 of Textured pattern.

For Size Small-Medium Only

Rows 5-24: Work as Textured pattern, 5 times. Fasten off at the end of row 24.

For Sizes Large-1X, 2X Only

Rows 5-28: Work as Textured pattern, 6 times. Fasten off at the end of row 28.

Left Sleeve

Row 1: Skip next 72 sts, ch 1, work as row 1 of Textured pattern on the next 107 sc. Turn.
Rows 2-4: Work as rows 2-4 of Textured pattern.
Rows 5-16: Work as Textured pattern, 3 times.
Rows 17-18: Work as rows 1-2 of Textured pattern.
Row 19 (Decreasing Section): Beg-2dc-cluster in next 2 sts, 2 dc-cluster in next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 dc, * skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, from the back of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from * until last 6 sts. Dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc-clusters in last 4 sts. (104 sts)

Rows 21-28: Work as Textured pattern, twice.
Row 29: Beg-2dc-cluster in next 2 sts, 2dc-cluster in next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 dc, * skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, from the back of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from * until last 6 sts. Dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc-clusters in last 4 sts. (96 sts)
Row 30: Beg-2dc-cluster in next 2 sts, 2 dc-cluster in next 2 sts, * skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, from the front of the tr work dc in each of the 3 skipped sts; repeat from * until last 4 sts. 2dc-clusters in last 4 sts. (92 sts)
Rows 31-32: Ch 1, sc in every st across. Turn.
Rows 33-56: Repeat rows 29-32, 6 times. (44 sts)
Rows 57-60: Work as rows 3-4 then rows 1 and 2 of Textured pattern.
Rows 61-64: Work as Ribbing pattern. Fasten off at the end of row 64.

Finishing

Sew the side and underarm seam.

Bottom Edge

Row 1: With RS facing and at the edge of left front, attach yarn, ch 1, work 2 sc in the side of every dc and sc in the side of every sc. Turn.
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each and every sc. Turn. Fasten off at the end of row 5.

Front and Neckband

Row 1: With RS facing and at the edge of the right front, sc in every st. For the back neck, work 2 sc in the side of every dc and sc in the side of every sc. For the left front work sc in every st across. Turn.
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc in every sc. At the left and right front neckline point work 2 sc in next sc and at the inner corner of front and back on both right and left front dsc. Turn.
Row 5 (Buttonhole Row): Ch 1, sc in next 15 (15, 20) sc, (ch 3, skip next 3 sc, sc in next 8 sc) 5 times, ch 3, 2 sc in next sc at the right front edge, continue as row 2 to end. Turn.
Rows 6-8: Work as row 2.
Rnd 9: With right side facing, work reverse sc around the front bands and the bottom edge. Fasten off.
Block cardigan to size.
Sew buttons opposite from buttonholes. yarn ball
