Babies love texture and interesting pattern designs – this blanket has both! With cute little animals all over, this blanket is perfect for a baby’s room.

Pattern Notes

The blanket and each animal will be made separately. The animals will be stitched on to complete. Tip: Using stitch markers to anchor head to blanket while sewing is very helpful.

The Penguin’s head is made from the bottom up. You will start with the white and trim in black. The eyes, nose and bow will all be made separately and added to the head with a yarn needle to finish.

The Elephant’s ears and nose will be made directly onto the head for a seamless design.

The Owl’s head and eyes will be made separately and then sewn together. The sprigs and nose will be added last to finish.

The Frog’s head and eyes will be made separately and then sewn together.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet Decrease (sc dec)
Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull back through (2 loops on hook). Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull back through (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook to complete decrease.

Double Crochet Decrease (dc dec)

Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull back through (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops on hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull back through (4 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops on hook (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through remaining loops on hook to complete decrease.

Using Elephant, ch 86.

Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each across – 85 sts.
Row 2: Turn, ch 3, dc in each stitch – 85 sts.
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch – 85 sts.
Rows 4-18: Repeat Rows 2-3, ending on Row 2.
Join Baby Pink, fasten off Elephant.
Row 19: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch – 85 sts.

Penguin

Head

Using White, ch 16.

Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each across – 15 sts.
Rows 2-11: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch.
Row 12: Turn, ch 1, sc, dc 4, hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc 4, sc.

Edging: Turn, sc down side of panel using ends of rows as stitches.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Join yarn at sc on Row 12, sc down side, sl st to last stitch to finish – 10 sts.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Black Edging

Row 1: Join Black yarn at bottom right stitch of face, ch 2, dc in each stitch – 39 sts.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Row 2: Join Black yarn in stitch 1 of Row 1, ch 1, sc 11, 2 sc in the next 3 stitches, sc 11, 2 sc, in next 3 stitches, sc 11.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Eyes (make 2)

Using Black, ch 2.

Round 1: 4 Sc in first chain, sl st to first stitch to join.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Nose

Using Tangerine, ch 2.
Row 1: 2 Sc in first chain – 2 sts.
Row 2: Turn, 2 sc in first stitch, sc in next – 3 sts.
Fasten off.

Bow

Using Teal, ch 11

Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each across – 10 sts.
Rows 2-5: Turn, ch1, sc in each stitch – 10 sts.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Wrap yarn around center of strip to cinch.

Assembly

Using the yarn needle, sew the eyes, nose and bow onto the penguin head.

Sew the head onto the blanket.

Head

Using Lilac, ch 9.

Row 1: 2 Sc in second chain from hook, sc 6, 2 sc in last chain – 10 sts.
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc, sc 8, 2 sc – 12 sts.
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc, sc 10, 2 sc – 14 sts.
Place a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of row.

Rows 2-10: Turn, ch 1, sc 6 – 6 sts.

Flower

Using White, ch 2.

Using Tangerine, ch 2.

Using Elephant, ch 2.

Round 1: 4 Sc in first chain, sl st to the first stitch to join.

Hair Sprigs

Cut 10-15 pieces of yarn approximately 4” long. Loop through the top middle stitches like fringe. Trim evenly.

Assembly

Using yarn needle, sew the eyes and flower onto head.

Add eyelashes and mini pupils to the eyes.

Sew Elephant head onto blanket.

Owl

Head

Using White, ch 16.

Row 1: 2 Sc in second chain from hook, sc 13, 2 sc in last chain – 17 sts.
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc 17 – 17 sts.
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc, sc 15, 2 sc – 19 sts.
Row 4: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc, sc 17, 2 sc – 21 sts.
Rows 5-17: Turn, ch 1, sc 21 – 21 sts.
Row 18: Turn, sc dec, sc 17, sc dec – 19 sts.
Row 19: Turn, sc dec, sc 15, sc dec – 17 sts.

Edging: Using ends of rows as stitches, sc around head but leave the bottom unworked, sl st to the first stitch of bottom row to join.

Eyes (make 2)

Using White, ch 2.

Pupils

Using Black, ch 2.

Round 1: 4 Sc in first chain, sl st to the first stitch to join.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Sprigs

Cut 3 pieces of yarn approximately 4” long in 3 different colors. Loop through the sides like fringe. Trim evenly.

Assembly

Using the yarn needle, sew the pupils onto the eyes and then the eyes onto the head. Next, use Tangerine and stitch on a triangle nose. Sew head to blanket.

Frog

Head

Using White, ch 16.

Row 1: 2 Sc in second chain from hook, sc 13, 2 sc in last chain – 17 sts.
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc 17 – 17 sts.
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc, sc 15, 2 sc – 19 sts.

Front Pupil (make 2)

Using Black, ch 2.

Using Soft Pink, ch 13, fasten off.

Assembly

Using the yarn needle, sew the eyes together from front to back and then sew completed eyes onto the head. Sew mouth in place. Sew head to blanket.

Using Chocolate, ch 12.

Row 1: 2 Sc in second chain from hook, sc 9, 2 sc in last chain – 13 sts.
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc, sc 11, 2 sc – 15 sts.

Assembly

Using the yarn needle, sew the nose onto the mouth and stitch the line down the center. Sew the pupil to the back eyes and then the sewn set onto the face. Next, sew the ears onto the side of the head. Sew the head onto the blanket.

Full Circle (make 5)

Using White, ch 4.

Round 1: 12 Dc in first chain, sl st to the first stitch to join – 12 sts.
Round 2: Ch 2 (count as a stitch), 2 dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch to complete round, sl st to the first stitch to join – 24 sts.
Round 3: Ch 2, *dc, 2 dc in next stitch; repeat from * to complete round, sl st to the first stitch to join – 36 sts.
Fasten off White.
Round 4: Join trim color, ch 1, *sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch; repeat from * to complete round, sl st to the first stitch to join.

Using White, ch 4.
