Owl Crochet Hooded Blanket

When it’s naptime, cover up your little cutie with the Owl Hooded Blanket. This cozy crochet hooded blanket features an attached owl hood and feather details to give the appearance of wings. Created with soft baby-approved yarn, this is the perfect naptime accessory.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Tip to tip = 37”; Hood to bottom = 30”

Gauge: 17 rows x 14 stitches in sc = 4” square

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Soft (100% acrylic; 256 yards [234 meters]/141 grams): Off White (Color A, 2 skeins), Chocolate (Color B, 1 skein), Sea Foam (Color C, 1 skein), Teal (Color D, 1 skein), White (Color E, 1 skein), Tangerine (Color F, 1 skein)
Hooks: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook
Notions: 5-6 stitch markers, yarn needle

Pattern Notes

The blanket is made corner to corner.
The feathers are added after the base blanket is created.
To increase size, continue increasing the blanket until desired width is reached. Follow pattern and decrease until you have 18 stitches. You will need to increase the row count of the hood if you make it larger. Start the wings at corner of hood and then sew over the hood as instructed. 

Pattern

Blanket Base

Using Color A, ch 2.
Row 1: 2 sc in first chain. (2 sts)
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch. (4 sts)
Rows 3-61: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc in first stitch, sc to next to last stitch, 2 sc in last stitch.
Note: Each Row will increase by 2 stitches. You will have 122 stitches at the end of Row 61.
Row 62-116: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc until 3 stitches remain, sc dec, sc in last stitch.
Note: Each Row will decrease by 2 stitches. You will have 18 stitches at end of Row 116. This is the top of the hood.
Rows 117-140: (hood) Turn, ch 1, 2 sc in first stitch, sc to next to last stitch, 2 sc in last stitch.
Note: Each Row will increase by 2 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Do not sew down yet.

Feather Trim

Fold hood down flat and mark rows with stitch markers where hood lines up evenly on BOTH sides.
Row 1: Join Color B (Chocolate) at one stitch marker, ch 3, dc in same stitch (counts as 2 dc), using the ends of rows as stitches, * skip 1 stitch, 2 dc in next, repeat to corner, in each corner 4 dc, repeat from * until you reach the opposite stitch marker.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 3 dc down the post that the ch 3 is attached to, ch 1, 4 dc up the next post, skip 2 dc, * 4 dc down the next post, 4 dc up the next post, skip 2 dc, repeat from * until you reach the corner. In the corner there are 4 dc stitches, skip the first post, 4 dc down the second post, ch 1, 4 dc up the third post, skip the fourth, repeat from * until you reach the end of the row. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Row 3: Turn, Join Color C (Seafoam) in the edge of the feather (in the tip of the feather), ch 3, 2 dc in same stitch, *2 dc in the center of the feather, 2 dc in between the feather, repeat from * until you reach the end of the row, 2 dc in the edge of the feather.
Row 4: Turn, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 3 dc down the post that the ch 3 is attached to, ch 1, 4 dc up the next post, skip 2 dc, * 4 dc down the next post, 4 dc up the next post, skip 2 dc, repeat from * until you reach the corner. In the corner there are 4 dc stitches, skip the first post, 4 dc down the second post, ch 1, 4 dc up the third post, skip the fourth, repeat from * until you reach the end of the row. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Row 5: Turn, Join Color D (Teal). Repeat Row 3.
Row 6: Repeat Row 4.

Hood Assembly

Lay the blanket with feathers down. Flip the hood to the non-feather side. Using Color A and yarn needle, sew the hood down on each side. Tip: Use stitch markers to help lay the hood down evenly and then sew. There will be a section on each side where the feathers down not join onto the blanket. After the hood is sewn down, use Color C (Seafoam) to sew over the edge on each side of the blanket. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Eyes: Make Two

Using Color B (Chocolate), ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in first chain, sl st to the first stitch to join. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each stitch, sl st to the first stitch to join. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Fasten off Color B, join Color E (white). Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout), dc in same stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, * dc, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round, sl st to the first dc stitch (not the ch 2) to join. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: Fasten off Color E, join Color C (Seafoam). Ch 2, dc in same stitch, dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, * dc 2, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round, sl st to the first dc stitch to join. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: Fasten off Color C, join Color D (Teal). Ch 1, sc in same stitch, sc 2, 2 sc in next stitch, * sc 3, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to complete round, sl st to the ch1 to join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Weave in ends. (30 sts)
Using yarn needle, sew eyes evenly onto bottom of hood.

Nose

Using Color F (Tangerine), ch 5.
Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each across. (4 sts)
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch. (4 sts)
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc. (3 sts)
Row 4: Turn, sc dec, using middle stitch again, sc dec. (2 sts)
Row 5: Turn, sc dec. (1 st)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Using yarn needle, sew nose onto the hood in between the eyes.

Ear Sprigs

Cut strips of each color approximately 4” long. Loop through like fringe in top corners of hood. Trim evenly. yarn ball
