Peek-a-Bloom Floral Coasters

This set of three flower hotpads is a beautiful addition to any summer table. Use them to protect your table from hot dishes or simply as lovely centerpieces. Made using cotton yarn in bright colors, they’re both functional and pretty!

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Each flower = 7.5” – 8”; Leaf is 3.5” x 3.75”

Gauge: Base worked through Row 6 (in BLO) diameter = 3.5”

Materials

Yarn: Lily Sugar n’ Cream (100% cotton; 120 yards [109 meters]/71 grams): Hot Pink (1 ball), Hot Orange (2 balls), Sunshine (1 ball), Dark Pine (1 ball)
Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm) and US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hooks
Notions: Removable markers, tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Picot: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.
Triple Crochet Two Together (tr2tog): Yo hook twice, insert hook in stitch indicated and draw up loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook twice (2 loops left on hook), yo hook twice, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook twice, draw through last 3 loops.
Crab Stitch: Insert hook from front to back in the next stitch to your right, yo and draw yarn thru stitch, yo and draw thru 2 loops on hook; repeat as directed.

Pattern Notes

Base of flower is worked in continuous rounds, in back loops only, without joining.
Petals of flower are worked in the unworked front loops of the base in a continuous spiral without counting rounds.

Base

With I hook and yarn color matching the flower you plan to make, begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc into ring. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: (Working in BLO from here thru row 12) 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: *2 sc next sc, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc; repeat from * around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * around. (36 sc)
Rnd 7: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc; repeat from * around. (42 sc)
Rnd 8: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc; repeat from * around. (48 sc)
Rnd 9: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc; repeat from * around. (54 sc)
Rnd 10: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc; repeat from * around. (60 sc)
Rnd 11: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc; repeat from * around. (66 sc)
Rnd 12: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc; repeat from * around. (72 sc)

Cactus Dahlia

With H hook and Hot Pink, begin in the center of the base with the first skipped front loop.
*[Sc, hdc], [dc, picot, dc], [hdc, sc], sl st; repeat from * around the spiral working the last round in the front loops of round 12 of base, sl st in next st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Rose

With H hook and Sunshine, begin in the center of the base with the first skipped front loop.
*[2 sc], [2 hdc], [2 dc], [2 htr], [2 dc], [2 hdc], [2 sc], sl st; repeat from * around the spiral working the last round in the front loops of round 12 of base, sl st in next st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Chrysanthemum

With H hook and Hot Orange, begin in the center of the base with the first skipped front loop.
*Ch 3, tr2tog (in same st as ch & into next st), ch 3, sl st into same st, sl st in next st; repeat from * around the spiral working the last round in the front loops of round 12 of base, sl st in next st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Leaf

With H hook and Dark Pine, ch 2.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1 turn. (1 sc)
Row 2: 2 sc, ch 1 turn. (2 sc)
Row 3: 2 sc in each sc, ch 1 turn. (4 sc)
Row 4: 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 1 turn. (6 sc)
Row 5: Work 1 sc in each sc across.
Row 6: 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 1 turn. (8 sc)
Row 7: Work 1 sc in each sc across.
Row 8: 2 sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 1 turn. (10 sc)
Row 9: Work 1 sc in each sc across.
Row 10: 2 sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 1 turn. (12 sc)
Row 11: Work 1 sc in each sc across.
Rows 12-13: Repeat row 11.
Row 14: Sc dec, sc in next 8 sc, sc dec in next sc. (10 sc)
Row 15: Work 1 sc in each sc across.
Work another sc in last stitch worked and turn to sc down the side and around the leaf. You will work 12 sc evenly down the first side of leaf, 3 sc into the point, and 14 sc up the other side of the pendant (the last sc will be worked into the first sc of row 15).
Ch 1, without turning, work 1 crab stitch into each of the sc just made around the border of the leaf. (30 crab sts)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

Sew leaf to flower. Sew in all ends.
