Chase the Rainbow Baby Booties

Worked up in a luscious palette of saturated color, these rainbow baby booties take the traditional granny square and transform it into a modern gift for baby. They’re also the perfect last-minute shower gift that can easily be worked up while on the go.

Skill level: Easy

Size: Infant size 0 to 3 months.

Gauge: 28 dc = 4” [10 cm]

Material

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Brown Sheep Company Wildfoote Luxury Sock (75% Washable Wool, 25% Nylon; 215 yards [197 meters]/50 grams): SY100 Rock ’n Roll (1 skein).

Hook: US size B/1 (2.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

Pattern is written for infant size 0 to 3 months.

For larger booties use sport, DK or worsted weight yarn along with an appropriate hook.

Pattern

Ch 12.

Rnd 1: In the 4th ch from the hook (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 2, sk next 2 ch, 1 dc in 7th, 8th, and 9th foundation chain (it is easier to count backwards from the beginning slip knot to locate these chains), ch 2, sk next 2 ch, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in beginning slip knot, ch 2, working in opposite side of foundation ch, work 3 dc in each ch across from the 3 dcs on the other side ch, ch 2, sl st into the top of the  beginning of rnd, sl st in top of next 2 dc, sl st in ch-2 sp. You should be in the right-hand corner of the bottom of Bootie.

Rnd 2: (Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next 2 sps, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, ch 3) in next corner sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next 2 sps, ch 1, sl st into top of beginning ch 3, sl st into the top of next 2 dcs, sl st into corner.

Note: From now on you will no longer be working in the rnd but crocheting on three sides of the bottom of the bootie.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 3, turn work, 2 dc in corner sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in all sps across bottom of Bootie, including the 2 corner sps, ending the row with 3 dc in corner sp across from the sp at beginning of this row.

Note: The bootie will no longer be flat after this row as you start to form it to fit baby’s foot.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 4, turn work, (3 dc, ch 1) in each sp across row. After the last sp, ch 1 as usual, dc in top of ch-3 from the previous row.

Row 3: Same as Row 1.

Row 4: Same as Row 2.

Row 5: Same as Row 1.

Row 6 (RS): Ch 1, turn work, sc across the row working into the tops of the dcs and in the sps.

Finishing

To finish, look down on the bootie. Your hook and yarn will be on the left side. Fold the right side of the toe of the bootie over and then the left side on top of that. You will have folded the bootie’s toe in thirds. Sl st all three layers. Break yarn. Weave in ends.

    Thank you for allowing me to print out this pattern. I have been trying to obtain a copy of a similar pattern, supposedly FREE but when it comes to printing I have to PURCHASE. Not free but I feel a fraudulent posting. Barbara Hopwood
