Owl Whoodie Set

Who wouldn’t look adorable in this creative hoodie, complete with pink and white scalloped feathers? Using simple stitches and assembly techniques, you can work this up in no time for any little one you know.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 6 mo (12 mo, 18 mo)

Gauge: 16 dc = 4”; 8 rows = 4”

Materials

Yarn:

Medium weight yarn Caron Simply Soft (100% acrylic; 315 yards [288 meters]/170 grams): #39783 Taupe (2 skeins), #B9604 Watermelon (1 skein), #39701 White (1 skein)
Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) and US size G/6 (4.0 mm) hooks
Notions: Tapestry needle, small amount of black and orange felt, sewing thread (black, white, orange)

Special Stitches

4-dc CL: (YO, insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hook) four times; YO, pull through all 5 lps on hook. 

Pattern Notes

Sweater base is worked from the bottom up.
When working decrease rows on sleeves, work repeat as many times as can even if does not fit evenly into number of sts for that round.
Ch 2 at beginning of each row does not count as a dc.
Feather sections are the same length and width for all 3 sizes – Can make with smaller hook for 6 mo. and larger hook for 18 mo.
All feather (scallop) and flower details are added using matching yarn and tapestry needle.
Eyes and beak are added using sewing thread and needle.

Pattern

Sweater Base

With H hook ch 73 (81, 89).
Row 1 (WS): Dc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in each st across. Turn.
Rows 3-10 (3-12, 3-14): Repeat Row 2; Do not fasten off.

Front Right Side

Row 11 (13, 15) (WS): Ch 2, dc in 1st st and in each of next 15 (17, 19) sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. Turn. (16 (18, 20) dc)
Row 12 (14, 16): Ch 2, sk 1st st, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn. (15 (17, 19) dc)
Row 13 (15, 17): Ch 2, dc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn.
Row 14 (16-17, 18-21): Repeat Row 13 (15, 17). 

Size 6 mo Only
Row 15: Ch 2, dc in 1st st and in each st across up to last st; Leave last st unworked. Turn. (14 dc) 

Sizes 12 mo and 18 mo
Row 18 (22): Ch 2, sk 1st st, dc in next st and in each st across. Turn. (16, 18 dc) 

All Sizes
Row 16 (19, 23): Ch 2, dc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn.
Row 17 (20, 24): Ch 2, dc in 1st st and in next 7 (8, 9) sts; dc2tog over next 2 sts leaving remaining sts unworked. Turn. (9 (10, 11 sts)
Row 18 (21, 25): Ch 2, dc2tog over 1st 2 sts, dc in each dc across. Fasten off. (8 (9, 10) sts)

Front Left Side

Work as for Front Right Side starting with sl st in first st of Row 10 (12, 14) with RS facing.

Back

Row 13: With RS facing, sk 4 sts after last st on Left Side of Front, join with sl st in next st; ch 2, dc in same st and in each of next  33 (35, 39) sts across; leave remaining 4 sts unworked. Turn.
Row 14: Ch 2, dc in 1st st and in each st across. Turn.
Row 15: Ch 2, dc2tog over 1st 2 sts, dc in each st across to last 2 sts, dc2tog in last 2 sts. Turn. (34 dc)
Rows 16-18 (16-21, 16-25): Repeat Row 14.
Row 19 (22, 26): Ch 2, dc in 1st and next 5 (6, 7) sts. Fasten off. Sk 19 (20, 21) sts, join with sl st to next st, ch 2, dc in same st and in remaining 5 (6, 7) sts in row. Fasten off.

Sleeves

Rnd 1: With RS facing join with sl st in a dc st unworked under arm; ch 2, work 37 (41, 45) evenly spaced dc in ends of all rows around arm hole making sure to work one dc in each of unworked 4 sts at base of arm hole; join with sl st to 1st dc of round.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in each st around; join with st st to 1st dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 2 (dc2tog, dc in next 5 sts) around.
Rnds 4-5: Repeat Round 2.
Rnd 6: Repeat Round Round 3.
Rnds 7-8: Repeat Round 2.
Rnd 9: Repeat Round 3.
Rnds 10-12 (10-14, 10-16): Repeat Round 2. Fasten off.

Feathers

Make 5 – 3 in Watermelon; 2 in White
With smaller hook ch 43.
Row 1: Working in the back bar of the chain, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in each st across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sl st in 1st st, (sk 3 dc, 9 tr in next st, sk 3 dc, sl st in next st) across. (5 ‘feathers’) Fasten off.

Sleeve Edging (Make Two)

With smaller hook and Watermelon, ch 25 (29, 33).
Row 1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2 (RS):  Ch 1, sl st in 1st st, (sk next st, 6 dc in next st, sk next st, sl st in next st) across. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Collar Edging

With smaller hook and Watermelon ch 53 (61, 69).
Work as for Sleeve Edgings.

Hat

With larger hook and Taupe, ch 54 (62, 70).
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in each st across. Turn.
Rows 3-11 (3-12, 3-14): Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.
Bring short ends together to make a tube and sew together with a whipstitch. Move seam to the center of the back.  Sew together opening at the top. Turn so Right Side out.
Find center 5 sts on each side.
Join with sl st, ch 2, 4-dc CL over next 4 sts; Ch 40. Fasten off.

Eyes (Make Two)

Rnd 1: With smaller hook and White, work 8 sc in an adjustable ring; join with sl st to 1st st.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st. (15 hdc)

Flower

Rnd 1: With smaller hook and Watermelon, work 5 sc in an adjustable ring; Do not join.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around; join with sl st to 1st st.
Rnd 3: (Ch 2, 3 dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st) around; Fasten off. (5 petals)

Finishing

Sew up front seam on base.
SC around collar edge with RS facing.
Sew on scallops to bottom of sleeves lining up Row 1 of edging with bottom of last row of sleeve.
Sew on Feathers overlapping each row using photo as a guide.
With RS facing of both collar and scallop edging and with smaller hook and Watermelon, ch 25, sc through all loops of edging and collar to join edging to collar, ch 25. Fasten off.
Cut out template for eyes and beak. Trace onto felt and sew to hat using photo as a guide and black sewing thread. Using white sewing thread sew eyes to black felt circles. Sew across base of eyelashes but do not sew lashes down. Sew pupil onto crocheted white eye with black sewing thread.
Sew both thicknesses of the beak together using a short whipstitch and orange sewing thread around all edges. Sew beak to hat using photo as a guide.
Sew flower to hat by one tuft. yarn ball
