Owl Candy Keeper

A simple sleeve gets all dressed up to make a special Valentine’s Day treat! A sweet heart on the belly and googly eyes make it a gift that will put a smile on their face.

Skill Level: Beginner

Size: 6” long x 2.75” wide (fits a standard Hershey’s chocolate bar)

Gauge: 16 sts x 16 rows = 4” in pattern

Materials

Yarn: Lily Sugar’n Cream (100% cotton; 150 yards [138 meters]/85 grams): Over the Rainbow (1 skein), Hot Pink (less than 1 skein), Hot Orange (less than 1 skein)
Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook
Notions: Tapestry needle, 2 20mm sew-on googly eyes

Special Stitches

Fsc (foundation single crochet): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop (ch st made), yo and pull through first loop, yo and pull through both loops (first sc made); *insert hook under 2 loops of ch st at base of first sc, yo and pull up a loop (ch st made), yo and pull through first loop, yo and pull through both loops (sc made); repeat from * until total number of fsc made.

Pattern

Body (Color A)
Rnd 1: Leaving a 6 inch tail, fsc 22; join to first fsc with a sl st to work in the round. (22 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, skip 1st st, sc in the next st, *ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in the ch-2 sp. (11 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the 1st ch sp, ch 1, skip the next st, *sc in the next ch sp, ch 1, skip the next st; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in the first sc. (11 sc)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, skip 1st st, sc in the next ch sp, *ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next ch sp; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in the ch-2 sp. (11 sc)
Rnds 5-25: Repeat Rounds 3-4.
Rnd 26: Holding sleeve flat, sc through both layers of end to close; break yarn and finish off. (11 sts)

Heart (Color B)
Rnd 1: Ch 2, then working all sts into the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc, dc, 2 tr, dc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, dc, 2 tr, dc, hdc, sl st. (16 sts)
Rnd 2: Sl st in each st around; break yarn leaving a 12” tail. Using a tapestry needle, run the yarn through the center of the heart, from back to front, over the center dent of the top, and secure in the back. Sew the heart to the sleeve as shown.

Beak (Color C)
Row 1: Ch 5, dc3tog over 3rd, 4th, and 5th chains from the hook. Break yarn leaving a 12” tail. Using a tapestry needle, sew the beak to the sleeve as shown.

Finishing

Sew eyes to the sleeve above the beak, as shown.
Cut six 6” lengths of Color A, tie three to each corner of top of sleeve to create tufts, as shown. Trim to length desired. yarn ball
