Belladonna Afghan

This flower adorned afghan features bright and dark petals that are juxtaposed on matching two-color blocks to create a puzzle appearance. Crochet this colorful blanket to add a dose of boldness to your home.

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (100% Acrylic; 170 yds [155 meters]/100 grams): 118 Midnight Blue (MC, 9 balls), 158 Mustard (CC1, 2 balls), 139 Rose Shocking (CC2, 2 balls), 169 Pistachio (CC3, 2 balls), 183 Periwinkle (CC4, 2 balls), 180 Cranberry (CC5, 2 balls), 100 White (CC6, 2 balls)

Hook: US size J/10 (6.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

Flowers are made separately and sewn to center of squares.

Squares are worked in the round, turning after each join.

To join new color, work last stitch of old color until 2 lps on hook, drop old color to WS, pick up new color and draw through both lps. Always keep dropped yarn to WS.

A hdc join is equal to a ch-2 join.

Pattern

Square (make 48)

Make 10 each in MC/CC1, MC/CC2, MC/CC3, MC/CC4

Make 8 in MC/CC5

Note: Follow color sequence above for each Square.

With MC make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 1 dc in ring, ch 2, 2 dc in ring, drop MC and join CC, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ring join with hdc to top of beg ch-3. (8 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, drop CC, join MC, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in last ch-2 sp, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3, turn. (24 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, drop MC, join CC, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, dc to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc to last ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, join with hdc to top of beg ch-3, turn. (40 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2. (56 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3. (72 dc, 4 ch-2)

Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2. (88 dc, 4 ch-2)

Fasten off.

Flower (make 48)

Make 10 each in MC/CC1, MC/CC2, MC/CC3, MC/CC4

Make 8 in MC/CC5

Note: All Flowers start with CC6 for the center and MC for the petals, ending with CC stated in the above color sequence.

With CC6 make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as first dc), 17 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (18 dc)

Rnd 2: [Ch 3, sk 2 sts, sl st in next st] around. Fasten off. (6 ch-3)

Rnd 3: With MC, *join with sl st to any ch-3 sp, (ch 5, 3 dtr, ch 5, sl st) in same sp, (sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, 3 dtr, ch 5, sl st) twice. Fasten off MC; rep from * with CC beg in next ch-3 sp. Fasten off CC.

Square Assembly

Sew Flowers to RS center of like colored squares, positioning petals to opposite color.

Afghan Assembly

Using mattress stitch in BL, sew squares together on WS using photo as a guide or in a random order.

Border

Rnd 1: Join MC with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, work dc evenly spaced around all sides of Afghan, placing 5 dc in each corner, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.
Rnds 2-3: Ch 3, dc in each st around, placing 5 dc in each corner dc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends, damp block.
