Sun-Dipped Tunisian Shawl

Featuring an asymmetrical triangle shape, Tunisian crochet stitches and a bold pop of color, this shawl is definitely going to make your need-to-crochet list. To style, simply drape the short side on one shoulder and wrap the longer end around your neck. This beauty pairs perfectly with a jean jacket or your favorite lightweight sweater.

Medium weight yarnYarn: Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird (100% Merino Wool; 186 yards [170 meters]/100 grams): Color Linen (MC, 4 balls)

Caron Simply Soft (100% Acrylic; 315 yards [288 meters]/170 grams): Color Gold RHY-R170-5316 (CC, 1 ball)

Hook: US Size E/4 (3.5 mm) Tunisian interchangeable crochet hook with 8’’ [20 cm] cable

Notions: Removable markers, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

FP – Forward pass

RP – Return pass

Tss2tog – Tunisian simple stitch 2 together

Yo – Yarn over

Yu – Yarn under

Special Stitches  

Tss2tog: Insert hook under 2 vertical bars, yo, pull up a lp.

Yu: Pull the yarn toward you and in front of hook, hold with index finger as you make your next st being careful not to wrap this yu around next st.

Tunisian Smock Stitch

Row 1 (FP): *Tss2tog over next 2 sts, yu; rep from * to end, insert hook into last st (at side of work here and throughout), pull up a lp. (RP): Yo, pull through 1 lp, *yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem on hook.

Row 2 (FP): *Tss in first st, *tss2tog over next 2 sts, yu; rep from * until 1 st rem before last, tss, insert hook into last st, pull up a lp. (RP): Yo, pull through 1 lp, *yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem on hook.

With MC, ch 80.

Foundation Row (FP): Sk first ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull up a lp; rep from * to end. (RP): Yo, pull through 1 lp, *yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem on hook. (80 sts)

Rows 7-180: Rep Rows 1-6, change to CC. (20 sts)

Row 83: Tss in first st, tss in side of work (3 lps on hook), yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Fasten off.

Second Half

Foundation Row (FP): With RS facing, join MC to st at right-angle corner with a sl st, pull up a lp in first st and in each st across. (RP): Yo, pull through 1 lp, *yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem on hook. (81 sts)

Row 1 (FP): *Tss2tog over next 2 sts, yu; rep from * to end but skip last yu, insert hook into last st (at side of work here and throughout), pull up a lp. (RP): Yo, pull through 1 lp, *yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem on hook. (80 sts)

Row 2 (FP): Tss in first st, *tss2tog over next 2 sts, yu; rep from * until 1 st rem before last, sk st before last, insert hook into last st, pull up a lp. (RP): Yo, pull through 1 lp, yo, pull through 3 lps, *yo, pull through 2 lps; rep from * across until 1 lp rem on hook. (78 sts)

Border

Row 1: With CC and RS facing, join yarn at outside corner of 2nd half. Working along 2 sides of your shawl, (sc, ch 1, sl st) into each row end.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave ends in.
