Cherry Crisp Cowl

With this yarn’s beautiful color and rich tones each puff stitch adds a luxurious feel to the center motif.  Complete with a knit-like stitch that’s crocheted to fill in the length around your neck, this striking accessory is just what your fall wardrobe has been asking for.

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch (Puff St)

[Yo, insert hook into st, yo, draw up a lp about 0.5” long] 5 times, yo, pull through all 11 lps on hook, ch 1.

Sophia Stitch 1 (Sophia St 1) – worked into a row of sc

Insert hook into next st, draw up a lp, insert hook into next st, draw up a lp, yo, pull through all 3 lps on hook, ch 1.

Sophia Stitch (Sophia St) – worked into a row of Sophia St

Insert hook into top of thicker part of st, draw up a lp, insert hook into ch, draw up a lp, yo, pull through all 3 lps on hook, ch 1.

Pattern Notes

First Flower Motif is worked and then length of scarf is joined to two sides of the motif as you go.

Lastly, a solid motif is stitched in the contrasting color and joined to the WS of first Flower Motif.

Flower Motif

Rnd 1: With C1, work 8 sc in an adjustable ring, join with sl st to first sc. (8 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, [Puff St, ch 3] around, ending with sl st in top of first Puff St.

Rnd 3: Sl st in each of next 2 ch, ch 6 (counts as hdc, ch 4), [hdc in next ch-3 sp, ch 4] around, ending with sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch-6.

Rnd 4: Ch 5, Puff St in same st, sl st in next hdc, [ch 5, Puff St (bringing lps up to be same height as ch-5), sl st in next hdc] around, ending with sl st in base of starting ch-5.

Rnd 5: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 1, sc in current ch-5 sp, [ch 6, sc in next ch-5 sp] around, ending with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st, [6 sc in next ch-6 sp, sc in next sc, 7 sc in next ch-6 sp (corner), sc in next sc] around, ending with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 7: Ch 4, *sk next st, Puff St in next st, sk next 2 sts, ch 2, Puff St in next st, ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st, now working in corner, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, Puff St in next st, ch 5, sk next st, Puff St in next st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, **dc in next st, ch 1; rep from * 3 more times, ending at ** on 3rd time, sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch-4.

Rnd 8: Ch 2, [hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next Puff St, 2 hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in next Puff St, hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next dc, 2 hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in next puff st, 5 hdc in next ch-5 sp, hdc in next Puff St, 2 hdc in next ch-2 sp, hdc in next dc] around, ending with sl st in top of starting ch-2.

Fasten off.

Square Background Motif

With C2, ch 21.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, Sophia St 1 across to last st and tch, work 1 more Sophia St by inserting hook into last sc for first leg of st and into tch for last leg of st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, Sophia St across to last st and tch, work 1 more Sophia St by inserting hook into last st (thickest part just before the ch) for the first leg of st and in tch for the last leg of st. Turn.

Rows 4-16: Rep Row 2.

Row 17: Ch 2, sc in each st and ch across.

Now working in rnds, ch 2, dc in each st across, working 2 dc in last st, working down next side, dc in side of each row with 2 dc in last row, working across bottom edge, dc in each st across with 2 dc in last st, working up last side, work dc in side of each row with 2 dc in side of last row, join with sl st to first dc of rnd.

Fasten off.

Cowl Length

With C1 and RS of Flower Motif facing, join with a sl st to “A” (see Diagram).

Ch 100, making sure ch does not twist, join with sl st at point “B” (see Diagram). Turn.

Row 1: Working in the back bar of ch, sc in first ch and in each ch across, sl st in same st as very first sl st (at point “A”). Turn. (100 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, Sophia St across 50 times, sl st in first st on side of Point B, sl st in next st on side of motif at Point B. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, Sophia St across, sl st in next st of motif (with Point A). Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, Sophia St across, sl st in same st as previous row on side of motif (with Point B), sl st in next st on motif. Turn.

Rep Rows 3-4 until reach top center point of motif.

Fasten off.

Finishing

With tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew background motif to Flower Motif around all 4 sides/edges with both RS facing up.

With tapestry needle and C1, secure rnds in center of Flower motif to background motif.

Weave in any rem ends.
