Cavalli Poncho Vest

This open front poncho is easy to wear with its simply placed arm slits and simple texture. Worked all in one piece for a more laid-back approach to crocheting, you’ll love wearing this piece on your next autumn walk around the block.

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Lion Brand Yarn Wool Ease (80% Acrylic, 20% Wool; 197 yards [180 meters]/85 grams): 98 Natural Heather (MC, 7 balls)

Lion Brand Yarn Heartland (100% Acrylic; 251 yards [250 meters]/142 grams): 135 Yosemite (CC1, 1 ball), 125 Mammoth Cave (CC2, 1 ball)

Hook/Needles: US size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook

Notions: 4 removable stitch markers, tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Mini bean stitch (mb) = insert hook in st, yo, pull through, yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1 to finish

Pattern Notes

The MC can be carried under the CC rows when they are being worked instead of fastening off. This will bring the MC to the next row when it is needed so there are less ends to weave in.

To create the points on each end, increases will occur on row ends for the first 43 rows, then decreases will be worked on row ends in the last rows before the collar is worked.

Pattern

With MC, ch 180.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next; rep from * across. (90 sc, 89 ch-sps)
Rows 2-7: Ch 1, turn, (sc, ch 1) in first sc, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last st, ch 1, sc in last st. (96 sc, 95 ch-sps)

Rather than fastening off MC, carry MC across under the worked mb sts in the next Row. Do this throughout.

Row 8: With CC1, ch 1, turn, (sc, ch 1) in first sc, mb in next ch-sp, *sk 1, mb in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last st, sc in last st. (2 sc, 95 mb)

Rows 9-15: With MC, Repeat Row 2. (104 sc, 103 ch-sps)

Row 16: With CC2, Repeat Row 8. (2 sc, 103 mb)

Rows 17-40: Repeat Rows 9-16. Alternate CC1 & CC2 every other mb st row. Row 40 will be CC1. (2 sc, 127 mb)

Rows 41-43: With MC, Repeat Row 2. (132 sc, 131 ch-sps)

Increasing stops at this point.

Row 44: Ch 1, turn, sc in first, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last st, sc in last st. (133 sc, 130 ch-sps)

Decreasing begins at this point.

Rows 45-47: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog over first 2 sc, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last 2 sc, sc2tog. (130 sc, 127 ch-sps)

Row 48: With CC2, ch 1, turn, sc2tog over first 2 sc, mb in next ch-sp, *sk 1, mb in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last 2 sc, sc2tog. (2 sc, 127 mb)

Row 49: With MC, ch 1, turn, sc2tog the first st and mb st (not the ch-sp of the mb st), sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across until 1 mb st remains, sc2tog the mb st and last st. (128 sc, 125 ch-sps)

Rows 50-55: Repeat Row 45. (122 sc, 119 ch-sps)

Row 56: With CC1, Repeat Row 48. (2 sc, 119 mb)

Row 57: With MC, ch 1, turn, sc2tog the first st and mb st (not the ch-sp of the mb st), sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across until 1 mb st remains, sc2tog. (120 sc, 117 ch-sps)

Rows 58-59: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. (118 sc, 115 ch-sps)

Armholes

From each end of last row worked, count 16 ch-sps in, place st marker in 16th ch-sp, count 14 more ch-sps, place st marker in 14th ch-sp.

Row 60: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog over first 2 sc, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * to first st marker, ch 27, sk the sts between the first and second st markers, sc in ch-sp with the second st marker, rep from * across to third st marker, ch 27, sk the sts between the third and fourth st markers, sc in ch-sp with fourth st marker, rep from * across to last 2 sc, sc2tog. (91 sc, 86 ch-sps, 2 ch-27 sps)

Rows 61-63: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. (114 sc, 111 ch-sps)

Rows 64-87: Repeat Rows 48-55. Alternate CC1 & CC2 every other mb st row. Row 64 will be CC2, Row 72 will be CC1, Row 80 will be CC2. (90 sc, 87 ch-sps)

Decreasing ends at this point.

Row 88: With CC1, ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *ch 1, sk 1, mb st in next; rep from * across to last 2 sts, sk 1, sc in last st. (2 sc, 87 mb)

Row 89: With MC, ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * across to last st, sc in last st. (90 sc, 87 ch-sps)

Row 90: Ch 1, turn, sc in first, ch 1, sk 1, *sc in next ch-sp, ch 1, sk 1; rep from * across to last st, sc in last. (89 sc, 88 ch-sps)

Rows 91-96: Repeat Rows 89-90. (89 sc, 88 ch-sps)

Collar Setup Rows

Row 97: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog the first st and next ch-sp, hdc in each ch-sp and st across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. (175 sts)

Row 98: Ch 1, turn, working in the 3rd loop, sc2tog, hdc in each across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. (173 sts)

Collar Side 1

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, hdc in next 55. (56 sts)

Row 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, hdc across to last 2, sc2tog. Do not turn after last row.

Collar Back Section

Sc evenly along each row edge of Collar Side 1, sl st in same st as last st of Row 1.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in next 59 sts from Row 98. (59 sts)

Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across. Do not turn after last row.

Collar Side 2

Sc evenly along left row edge of Collar Back Section, sl st in same st as last st of Row 1.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st across from Row 98 to last 2 sts, sc2tog. (56 sts)

Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, hdc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. Fasten off after Row 5.

Collar Edge

Join MC to edge of Row 98 where Collar Setup Rows start. Ch 1, sc evenly along each edge of collar placing 2 sc in any corner and sl st between each section of collar. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Finishing

Cut 24 strands 5.5 inches in length of CC1 & cut 20 strands 5.5 inches in length of CC2. Add 2 strands as fringe on each row end where the same contrasting color is.
