Freya Fringed Tote

This fringed tote is sure to make a statement! Swishy fringe detail begs to be touched. The body of the tote is worked in a continuous spiral from an oval base and the sides have alternating “ridge rows” and plain rows. Get ready for compliments whenever you don this creative bag!

Gauge: 25 sts and 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc

Materials

Fine weight yarnYarn: Schachenmayr Catania (100% Mercerized Cotton; 137 yards [125 meters]/50 grams): 162 Kaffee (MC, 6 balls), 383 Zimt (CC1, 1 ball), 110 Schwarz (CC2, 1 ball), 257 Bast (CC3, 1 ball), 128 Fuchsia (CC4, 1 ball).

Hook: US size B (2.25 mm)

Notions: Removable markers, tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

The oval bottom and sides of the tote are worked in a continuous spiral. Do not slip stitch to join rounds.

The sides of the tote alternate ridge rows with plain rows, with ridge rows created by working into the back loop only of each stitch.

Fringe is attached to the front loops of the ridge row stitches.

Rnd 13:  Sc in BL of each st. (204 sts)

Fasten off.

Straps (make 2)

With MC, ch 263.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook (skipped st does not count as st) and each ch. Turn. (262 sts)
Rows 2-8: Sc in each st. Turn. (262 sts)

Fasten off.

Finishing

Mark center of each tote side and center of each tote end with a stitch marker, leaving 50 sts between each marker. Center a Strap between the markers on one side and pin to inside of tote. Sew Strap in place to interior of tote. Rep on other side.

Mark the center 4” / [10 cm] of each strap where it rests on the shoulder. Fold Strap in half between the markers and sew closed.

Cut 1,492 pieces of 5.5” / [14 cm] fringe: 394 pieces in CC1, 464 pieces in CC2, 244 pieces in CC3, and 480 pieces in CC4.

Attach fringe to FL of sts of Rnds 20, 24, 28, 32, 26, 44, 52, 60, and 64 as shown in Fringe Chart.

Trim fringe as desired.

  • EASY? I beg to differ. Cutting and strategically attaching THOUSANDS of pieces of fringe is not an easy task IMO. Just sayin’. Wouldn’t have the time nor the inclination to tackle such a project.
