Fantastic Plum Colorwork Set

The Fantastic Plum Colorwork Set features a slouchy hat topped off with a pom pom, a striking cowl and fingerless gloves closed with fancy buttons. Each piece features a complicated-looking colorwork band that’s easier to make than you’d think that sets this set apart from anything else you’ll see this season.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Hat = 20 (22, 24)” circumference; cowl = 55” circumference; fingerless gloves = 6 (7, 8)” circumference

Gauge: 20 sts and 20 rnds = 4” [10 cm] measuring Rounds from the bottom of Round 1 and working in pattern. 

Materials

Yarn:

Super Fine Weight Yarn Knit Picks Palette (100% peruvian highland wool; 231 yards [212 meters]/50 grams): #26038 Urchin (MC, 2 balls for hat, 1 ball for cowl, 1 ball for mitts), #24255 Eggplant (CC1, 1 ball for hat, 2 balls for cowl, 1 ball for mitts), #25090 Pennyroyal (CC2, 1 ball for hat, 1 ball for cowl, 1 ball for mitts)

Hook: US size E/4 (3.5 mm) and D/3 (3.25 mm) hooks

Notions: Yarn needle, stitch marker; pom pom maker 

Special Stitches

2dc Cluster (2dcCl): YO, insert hook in indicated st, YO, draw yarn through, YO, draw through 2 loops, (YO insert hook in same st, YO, draw yarn through, YO, draw through 2 loops) 1 time, YO draw yarn through all loops on hook.
3dc Cluster (3dcCl): YO, insert hook in indicated st, YO, draw yarn through, YO, draw through 2 loops, (YO insert hook in same st, YO, draw yarn through, YO, draw through 2 loops) twice, YO draw yarn through all loops on hook.

Pattern Notes

Please read pattern through before beginning and ensure you have all the requirements needed to complete the piece. The patterns are worked in Rounds from the bottom up. Run colors up the inside of the hat to minimize ends to sew in.
At the end of each round, join with slip stitch unless otherwise noted.

Hat Pattern

Hat Band

With size 3.5 mm hook and CC1, ch 92 (104, 112), join with sl st into a ring being careful not to twist ch. Change to size 3.0 mm hook.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in first ch, sc in each ch to end of rnd. (92, 104, 112 sts)
Change to MC.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to end of rnd.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to end of rnd.
Change to MC.
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in each st to end of rnd.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to MC
Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to CC2.
Rnd 8: Ch 3, 2dcCl in same st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, *3dcCl in next 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts; rep from * to last st, 3dcCl in last st, sl st in top of first cluster to join.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in top of cluster, *working in front of ch-2 and into Rnd 7, tr in next 2 sts, sc in top of next 2 clusters; rep from * to last 3 sts, working in front of ch-2, tr in next 2 sts, sc in top of last cluster, sl st in top of first sc to join.
Rep Rnds 2-7, keeping colors correct throughout.
Change to MC. 

Hat Top

Work in a spiral without joining at ends of the Rnds, using a st marker to keep track of ends of Rnds.
Rnd 16: (Sc, dc) in first st, sk 1 st, *(sc, dc) in next st, sk 1 st; rep from * to end of rnd, do not join.
Rnd 11: Working into sp between dc and sc, *(dc, sc) into sp, sk (sc, dc); rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 11 until Hat measures 6” from bottom of band. Use st marker to mark end of Rnd.
Size Small Hat Only: Work 1 more round decreasing 4 stitches in Rnd. (88 sts)

Crown Decrease

Rnd 1: (Sc, 1 dc) in next 10 (12, 13) sps, sc in next sp; rep from * to end of rnd. (86, 98, 108 sts)
Rnd 2: (Sc, dc) in next 10 (12, 13) sps, sk (2 sc, dc); rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: (Sc, dc) in next 9 (11, 12) sps, sc in next sp; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 4: (Sc, dc) in next 9 (11, 12) sps, sk (2 sc, dc); rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: (Sc, dc) in next 8 (10, 11) sps, sc in next sp; rep from * to end to end of rnd.
Rnd 6: (Sc, dc) in next 9 (11, 12) sps, sk (2 sc, dc); rep from * to end of rnd.
Continue decreasing in pattern until 12 sts remain. Fasten off leaving a long tail. 

Finishing

Thread long tail onto yarn needle and weave through last 12 sts, pull up tight to close hole.
Make pom pom and attach firmly to top of Hat.
Weave in ends.

Cowl Pattern

Using size 3.5mm hook and MC, ch 280, join with sl st into a ring being careful not to twist ch. Change to size 3.0 mm hook.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in first ch, sc in each ch to end of rnd. (280 sts)
Change to CC1.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to end of rnd.
Change to MC.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to end of rnd.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in each st to end of rnd.
Change to MC.
Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to MC.
Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to CC2.
Rnd 8: Ch 3, 2dcCl in same st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, *3dcCl in next 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts; rep from * to last st, 3dcCl in last st, sl st in top of first cluster to join.
Change to MC.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in top of cluster, *work in front of ch-2 and into Rnd 7, tr in next 2 sts, sc in top of next 2 clusters; rep from * to last 3 sts, work in front of ch-2, tr in next 2 sts, sc in top of last cluster, sl st in top of first sc to join.
Rnds 2–9 form pattern. Repeat pattern twice more, then repeat Rnds 2-7 once more, keeping colors correct throughout.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fingerless Mitts Pattern

Wrist Band (Make Two)

With size 3.5 mm hook and CC1, ch 31 (35, 41). Change to size 3.0 mm hook.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to end of rnd, join with sl st. (30, 34, 40 sts)
Change to MC.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to end of rnd, join with sl st.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st to end rnd, join with sl st.
Change to CC2.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 3 (3, 4) sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, *3dcCl in next 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts; rep from * to last 4 (4, 5) sts, dc in last 4 (4, 5) sts, join with sl st.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 5:  Ch 3, dc in next 4 (4, 5) sts, *work in front of ch-2 and into Rnd 3, tr in next 2 sts, sc in top of next 2 clusters; rep from * to last 6 (6, 7) sts, work in front of ch-2, tr in next 2 sts, dc in last 4 (4, 5) sts, join with sl st.
Change to MC.
Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 2.
Change to MC.
Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in each st to end of rnd, join with sl st.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 2.
Rep Rnds 2–7, keeping colors correct throughout.
Change to MC. 

Glove Left Hand

Row 1: (Sc, dc) in first st, sk 1 st, *(sc, dc) in next st, sk 1 st; rep from * to end, do not join.
Row 2: Working into sp between dc and sc, ch 3, (sc, dc) in next 5 sps, (sc, dc) between next sc and dc, (sc, dc) in next 6 (7, 8) sps, (sc, dc) between next sc and dc, (sc, dc) in each sp to end of row, dc in last st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in sp between 1st dc and next st, (sc, dc) in next 5 sps, (sc, dc) between sc and dc, (sc, dc) in next 6 (7, 8) sps, (sc, dc) in each sp to end of row, (sc, dc) in sp before last dc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, (sc, dc) in next 10 (11, 12) sps, (sc, dc) in sp between sc and dc, (sc, dc) in each sp to end of row, dc in last st.
Bring both sides together and sl st into top of ch-3 from Row 4, joining glove and working in rounds from here on.
Work in a spiral, marking end of round with a stitch marker.
Rnd 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), (sc, dc) in each sp to end of rnd, sc in sp next to ch-3, do not sl st. Begin next rnd in ch-3 sp.
Rnd 6: (Sc, dc) in each sp to end of rnd.
Rep rnd 6, 8 times. 

Thumbhole

Rnd 15: Turn and sl st back 7 sts, turn, ch 8, sk 10 sts, (sc, dc) into sp, (sc, dc) into each sp around to ch-8, (sc, dc) into first ch, [sk 1 ch, (sc, dc) into next ch] 3 times, (sc, dc) in next sp, (sc, dc) in each sp to end of rnd.
Rnds 16-20: (Sc, dc) in each sp to end of rnd. Sl st into last sp at the end of Rnd 20.
Change to CC1.
Rnd 21: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog; rep from * to end of rnd, sl st in first sc to join.
Rnd 22: Ch 1, sc in each st to end of rnd.
Fasten off and weave in ends. 

Glove Right Hand

Work as for Left Hand to the end of Row 4, turn so RS is facing and continue working as for Left Hand to thumb. 

Thumbhole

Rnd 15: (Sc, dc) in next 10 (11, 12) sps, ch 8, sk 10 sts, (sc, dc) in next sp, (sc, dc) in each sp to end of rnd.
Rnd 16: (Sc, dc) into each sp to beginning of ch-8, (sc, dc) into first ch, [sk 1 ch, (sc, dc) into next ch] 3 times, (sc, dc) in next sp, (sc, dc) in each sp to end of rnd.
Continue working as for Left Hand to end.
Fasten off and weave in ends. 

Finishing

Attach 3 buttons to one side of wrist, lining them up with corresponding Cluster and dc rows for buttonholes.
