Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet

Learn how to do a back post double crochet and a front post double crochet

You will most often see these stitches used for ribbing in your work like the start of a sock or the brim of a hat. With a little practice, front post and back post double crochet are a breeze to complete and definitely worth having in your bag of crochet tricks.

For front post and back post double crochet, we are going to be working into the post of our double crochet stitch instead of working into the ‘v’s like we normally would. With a little practice, this can be a relatively easy stitch to master.

Front Post Double Crochet: FPDC

So for front post double crochet, we’re going to yarn over, and then we’re going to go around the post from front to back to front. Yarn over again, and pull through a loop and then finish it off like a normal double crochet stitch (yarn over, pull through two x2). Going around the post just sort of makes that double crochet stitch pop out towards the front.

Back Post Double Crochet: BPDC

Back post double crochet is very similar. Again, start with a yarn over. Then we’re going to go around the post but this time going from back to front to back. This will make the stitch pop out towards the back instead of the front. Then yarn over again, and pull through a loop and then finish it off like a normal double crochet stitch (yarn over, pull through two x2).
