Pacific Coast Pillow

Using basic stitches and thick blanket yarn, this pillow works up quickly and adds a touch of the sea to any home décor. Using shades of blue yarn topped with rows of white, this precious pillow effortlessly mimics crests of waves near the shoreline.  

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 25” x 25”

Gauge: one 7-dc shell (from sc to sc) and 2 rows of stitch pattern = 4” [10 cm]

Materials

Super bulky weight yarnYarn: Bernat Blanket Yarn Ocean Collection (100% Polyester; 220 yards [201 meters]/300 grams): 10799 Blue Velvet (CC1, 1 skein), 10800 Lapis (CC2, 1 skein), 10808 North Sea (CC3, 1 skein), 10006 Vintage White (CC4, 1 skein)

Hook: US size N/P (10 mm)

Notions: 24” x 24” square floor pillow, tapestry needle with large eye

Special Stitches

Ch-1 picot

Ch 1, sl st into side of sc post made.

Pattern Notes

Pattern is worked in rows.

Color is changed every 2 rows. On one side of pillow, use colors in order listed above. On other side use colors in order as follow: CC2, CC1, CC3.

Ch-3 at beg of every other row counts as a dc.

Pattern (make 2)

Ch 50.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sk next 3 ch, 7 dc in next ch, sk next 3 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across until 8 ch rem, sk next 3 ch, 7 dc in next ch, sk next 3 ch, sc in last ch. Turn. (6 7-dc shells)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *working in front loops only, sl st in next dc, (sc, ch-1 picot) in each of next 5 dc, sl st in next dc, sk next sc; rep from * across, sc in last sc. Turn. Fasten off.

Row 3: With next color, join with sl st in first sc, (ch 3, 3dc) in same first st, *sc in back bar of sc above 4th dc in next shell, 7 dc in back loop of next sl st (in between current shell and next); rep from * across to last sc, 4 dc in last sc. Turn. (5 whole 7-dc shells and 2 half 7-dc shells)

Row 4: Ch 1, working in front loops only, (sc, ch-1 picot) in first st and in each of next 2 sts, sl st in last dc of this first shell, *sk next sc, sl st in next dc, (sc, ch-1 picot) in each of next 5 dc, sl st in next dc; rep from * across to last sc and 4 dc (1/2 shell), sk last sc, sl st in next dc, (sc, ch-1 picot) in each of last 3 dc. Turn. Fasten off.

Row 5: With next color, join with sc in top of t-ch (from 2 rows previous), *working behind the first (sc, ch-1 picot), 7 dc in back loop of next sl st (between current shell and next shell), sc in back bar of sc above 4th dc in next shell; rep from * across, sc in top of last dc working behind last (sc, ch-1 picot). Turn.

Rep Rows 2-5, 5 more times.

Rep Row 2. Fasten off. (26 total rows)

Finishing

Pin or clip both pieces together with WS facing each other and shells pointing upward on both sides.

Join darkest blue in Corner A with sl st.

Sc both pieces together up to Corner D, leaving one side open, making sure to work 2 scs in Corner B and C. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Insert pillow form.

With needle and long yarn tail, whipstitch opening closed.

Weave in all ends.
