Skill Level: Easy

Size: 12” x 12” square

Gauge:  9 sc and 11 sc rows = 2 inches

Materials

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Encore Worsted medium (worsted) weight (100% acrylic; 200 yards [189 meters]/100g):

#1317 vacation blues (MC), 1 skein

#1202 sand (CC1), quarter skein

#801 colonial green (CC2), 30 yds

#154 blue haze (CC3), 30 yds

#793 lite blue (CC4), half skein

#449 pink (CC5), 65 yds

#597 pale peach (CC6), 60 yds

Hook/Needles: US size G/6 (4mm) hook and C/2 (2.75mm) crochet hooks

Notions: Blocking supplies, tapestry needle, large eye hand sewing needle, scissors or rotary cutter, ruler and mat

Special Stitches

Back horizontal bar: Skip top 2 lps of indicated ch, insert hook in next horizontal bar on back of ch. (Also called 3rd bar)

Slip stitch join (sl st join): With lp on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull lp up through lp on hook.

Single crochet join (sc join): With lp on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull lp through both lps on hook.

Slip st decrease (sl st dec): With lp on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up lp, insert hook in next st, yo, pull lp up through all lps on hook.

Pattern Notes

Chain-1 (ch 1): Chain 1 at beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.

Do not chain 1:  Do not chain 1 at beg of rows unless otherwise stated.

Chain-3 (ch 3): Chain 3 at beginning of rows counts as a stitch unless otherwise stated.

Chain-2 (ch 2): Chain 2 at beginning of rows counts as a stitch unless otherwise stated.

Chain-4 (ch 4): Chain 4 at beginning of rows counts as a stitch unless otherwise stated.

Change color before completing last st: Work current stitch until last yarn over, drop current yarn to WS, yo with new color and pull through all lps on hook.

Pillow Back

With MC and larger hook, ch 55,

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (54 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1 (see Pattern Notes), sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, [hdc in each of next 8 sts, sc in each of next 8 sts] across to last 3 sts, hdc in each of next 3 sts, turn.

Row 3: Working in back lps, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, [dc in each of next 8 sts, sc in each of next 8 sts] across to last 3 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, turn.

Row 4: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), dc in each of next 2 sts, [sc in each of next 8 sts, dc in each of next 8 sts] across to last 3 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts, turn.

Pillow Front

Beg at bottom edge with CC1 and larger hook, ch 55,

Row 1 (RS/Beach): Rep row 1 of Back.

Rows 2-15: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 16: Rep row 2 of Back, change color to CC2 before completing last st, turn. Fasten off CC1.

Row 17-18 (First wave): Rep rows 3-4 of Back, change color to CC3 before completing last st, turn. Fasten off CC2.

Rows 19-20 (2nd wave): Rep rows 5-6 of Back, change color to MC before completing last st, fasten off CC3.

Row 21-22 (3rd wave): Rep rows 3-4 of Back.

Row 23: Working in back lps of sts, ch 2 (see Pattern Notes), hdc in each of next 2 sts, [sc in each of next 8 sts, hdc in each of next 8 sts] 3 times, sc in each of next 3 sts, turn.

Row 24: Rep row 2, change color to CC4 before completing last st, fasten off MC.

Row 25 (Sky): Working in back lps of sts, ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each of next 41 sts, change to CC1 before completing last st, sc in each of next 12 sts (Cliff), turn.

Right Side Edging

Beg at bottom edge with Front RS facing, working in ends of rows along right side edge with CC1 and larger hook, sc join in first row, *work 14 sc evenly spaced to within first wave, change color to CC2 before completing last st, work 2 sc across to within 2nd wave, change color to CC3 before completing last st, work 2 sc to within 3rd wave, change color to MC before completing last st, work 2 sc to within sky, change color to CC4 before completing last st, work 30 sc evenly spaced to top corner*. Fasten off.  (51 sc)

Left Side Edging

Beg at top edge with Front RS facing, working in ends of rows along left side edge with CC4 and larger hook, sc join in first row, *work 27 sc evenly spaced to within cliff, change color to CC1 before completing last st, work 2 sts to within 3rd wave, change color to MC before completing last st, work 2 sc to within 2nd wave, change to CC3 before completing last st, work 2 sc to within first wave, change to CC2 before completing last st, work 2 sc to within beach, change color to CC1 before completing last st, work 15 sc evenly spaced to bottom corner*. Fasten off. (51 sc)

Umbrella

With CC5 and smaller hook, ch 11,

Row 1 (RS): Working in back bar (see Special Stitches) of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in each of next 3 chs, dc in each of next 4 chs, turn. (10 sts)

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in each of next 3 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts, change color to CC6 before completing last st, turn. (10 sts)

Row 3: Working in back lps of sts with CC6, ch 1, sl st in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st turn. (11 sts)

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in each of next 3 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, sl st dec over next 2 st, change color to CC5 before completing last st, turn. (11 sts)

Row 17: Working in back lps of sts with CC5, ch 4 (see Pattern Notes), 2 tr in same st, dc in next 4 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc dec over next 2 sts, turn. (12 sts)

Edging Rnd: Working across top edge of umbrella stripes, ch 1, *2 sc in each center of next 3 stripes*, 2 hdc in center of next stripe, (2 dc, tr, 2 dc) in center of next stripe, 2 hdc in center of next stripe, rep from * to * once, ch 1, working in sts of row 9, sc in each of next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, sc in same place where last sc was made, working across bottom edge of umbrella stripes, work 3 sc evenly spaced in first stripe, [work 4 sc evenly spaced across next stripe] 8 times, ch 1, working in sts of row 17, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 11 sts, join to first sc of rnd. Fasten off.  (83 sts)  

Fringe

Cut 38- 8” strands CC7, with bottom edge of umbrella RS facing, *insert smaller hook from bottom to top through lower loop of first ch-1 at right edge, fold 1 fringe strand in half, yo with center of strand and pull through ch lp, pull cut ends of fringe through lp and pull to tighten and form a knot. Rep from * in same manner to add fringe to each of next 36 sts and last ch-1. Fasten off.  (38 fringe added)

Block umbrella with fringe lying smooth and straight. When dry, use scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, and mat to trim fringe to 0.5″below larks head knot or to length desired.  Designer tip: Cut all fringe strands from the outside yarn end of skein for smoother fringe.

Towel

With CC5 and larger hook, ch 16,

Row 1: Working in back bar of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, change color to CC6 before completing last st, turn. (15 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across, change color to CC5 before completing last st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Rep row 3, change color to CC6 before completing last st, turn.

Rows 5-6: Rep rows 2-3 once. Fasten off.

Edging

Using CC5 and smaller hook with towel RS facing, working in ends of rows, sl st join (see Special Stitches) in end of first row, work 7 sl sts evenly spaced across towel. Fasten off. (8 sl sts)

Rep to add edging to opposite end of towel.

Fringe

Cut 16- 4” lengths of CC7, follow Fringe instructions as for Umbrella Fringe to add fringe across each end of towel, block and trim.

Pole

With CC8 and smaller hook, ch 31,

Row 1: Working in back bar of chs, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. (30 sl sts)

Finishing

With photo as placement guide, use tapestry needle and CC8 to sew umbrella pole where desired to front of pillow. Use CC5 to sew umbrella over top end of pole and towel below bottom end of pole.

Using CC7, make 3 pair of straight sts with tapestry needle in sky where desired for sea gulls.

Cut twenty 2-inch strands CC7, tie center of strands tightly with a 6-inch length of CC7. Use scissors to trim pom pom to desired size. Insert tie ends through pillow front above center top of umbrella and tie tightly on WS to secure.

Divide an 18-inch length of CC1 into 3 plies. Use a large eye hand sewing needle and 1 ply CC1 to sew sea shells to sand on each side of towel where desired.

Designer’s Tip: If needle will not go through sea shell holes, thread tapestry needle with CC1, insert needle from back to front where desired, remove yarn from needle, thread end of yarn through dental floss threader, insert tip of threader through shell hole and pull yarn through shell, remove yarn from threader and thread through tapestry needle, insert needle from front to back of Front and tie ends together to secure shell. 

Assembly

Working through both layers in opposite side of foundation chs with Pillow Front and Back WS together and Front RS facing, using CC1 and larger hook, sc join in first ch, sc in same ch, sc in each ch across to first corner, working along right side edge in sts of front and where desired in ends of rows of Back, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 14 sts to within first wave, change color to CC2 before completing last st, sc in each of next 2 sts to within 2nd wave, change color to CC3 before completing last st, sc in each of next 2 sts to within 3rd wave, change color to MC before completing last st, sc in each of next 2 sts to within sky, change color to CC4 before completing last st, sc in each of next 30 sts to top corner working in sts of top rows of both layers, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 53 sts across to next corner at left side edge, working in sts of Front and where desired in ends of rows of Back left side edge, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 27 sts to within cliff, change color to CC1 before completing last st, sc in each of next 2 sts to within 3rd wave, change color to MC before completing last st, work sc in each of next 2 sts to within 2nd wave, change to CC3 before completing last st, sc in each of next 2 sts to within first wave, change to CC2 before completing last st, sc in each of next 2 sts to within beach, change color to CC1 before completing last st, sc in each of next 15 sts to bottom corner, inserting pillow before finishing, join in first st of rnd. Fasten off. (214 sc)
