Horizon Plant Hanger

Hanging planters are not just charming, old-school items — they’re attractive space savers that can easily be crocheted. Introducing the Horizon Plant Hanger. By taking a simple shell pattern and mixing it with another shell motif, you’ll be able to create your own hanging plant holder that’s perfect for showing off your indoor greenery.

Size: Fits to an approx. 7-8” / [17-20 cm] diameter x 6-7” / [16-18 cm] tall pot, with straps plant hanger is approx. 24” / [60 cm] high

Gauge: Rnd 2 = 2” [5 cm] diameter

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Garnstudio DROPS Paris (100% Cotton; 82 yards [75 meters]/50 grams): 23 Light Grey (2 balls)

Hook: US size H/8 (5.00 mm)

Notions: Removable marker, tapestry needle, 2’’ wooden ring to fasten the finished hanger

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up.

Loop hangers are easily resizable (multiple of 6 sts + 1).

In Rnds 3-10, work in dc only.

In Rnds 2-10, beg ch-4 counts as dc + ch 1.

Base

Ch 6, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc, ch 1), dc in same st, *ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st in top of first ch-3. (12 dc, 12 ch-sps; 24 sts total)

Rnd 3: Ch 4, dc in same st, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, join. (36 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 4, dc in same st, sk next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp) twice, *ch 1 (dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp) twice; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, join. (48 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 4, dc in same st, sk next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp) 3 times, *ch 1 (dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp) 3 times; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, join. (60 sts)

Rnd 6: Ch 4, dc in same st, sk next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp) 4 times, *ch 1 (dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp) 4 times; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, join. (72 sts)

Rnds 7-10: Ch 4, sk next ch-1 sp, *dc in next dc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, join.

Scallop Edging

Rnd 11: *Ch 9, sk next 5 sts, sl st in next st, sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st; rep from * around, join in first st. (6 dc-5 shell, 6 ch-9 completed)

Rnd 12: Ch 1, sl st in next 2 ch of first ch-9, *sk next 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk next 2 ch, sl st in next ch, sk next ch, (fptr, dc) in next 2 dc of dc-5 shell, (fptr, dc, fptr) in center dc, (dc, fptr) in last 2 dc, sk next ch, sl st in next ch (full-shell completed); rep from * around, last st join in 2nd sl st. Rnd 13: Ch 3, *(fptr, dc) in next 2 dc of first dc-5 shell, (fptr, dc, fptr) in center dc, (dc, fptr) in last 2 dc, ch 1, sk next 5 sts, join with sl st in next st (center st of full-shell), ch 1, sk next 5 sts; rep from * around, last st join in first fptr.

Fasten off..

Loop Straps (Make 3)

Rnd 1: Ch 61, sk next 3 ch, *6 dc in next ch, sk next 2 ch, sl st in next ch, sk next 2 ch; rep from * 9 times total, 6 dc in next ch, sk next 2 ch, join in last ch and turn upside down.

Repeat instructions working into same places in the other side of ch, join in last ch at the end.

Leaving approx. 4-6’’ / [10-15 cm] long tail, fasten off.

Finishing

Assembly

*Insert hook in the center dc of first full-shell, ch 25, pass the ch through the last lp of one strap, sk next shell, join with sl st to center dc of 3rd shell, break yarn, sk next shell; rep from * twice more.

Fasten Straps to wooden ring.

Blocking is not required; the finished piece will stretch out when hanged.
