Patchwork Posies Scarf

Perfect for scrap busting your yarn stash, these little posie motifs and start motifs are joined together to make a vibrant scarf. Connecting each posie as you go makes this scarf work up nicely.

Gauge: motif measures 2.25” / [7cm] 2¼in (7cm) x 2¼in (7cm)

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Scheepjes Catona (100% Mercerized Cotton; 137 yards [125 meters]/50 grams):

Special Stitches

Stem: Ch 4, sl st in first of these 4 ch.

Joining Stem: Ch 2, sl st in joining point, ch 2, sl st in first of these 4 ch.

Pattern Notes

The scarf is worked in flower motifs, joined by stems made of chain stitches.

The center row is worked first, followed by a bottom row then top row, once joined small star flowers are made to fill the space between motifs.

A border is added in two colors, with matching tassels.

Row 1

Flower Colors – 20 flowers in row. The center color is stated first, followed by the outer petal/stem color:

Flower 1

With first color (263), make a Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc), 17 tr in ring. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join 2nd color (179) with sl st in blo of any st, ch 1 (not counted as st), sc in first st, make 1 stem, sc in same st, 2 sc in next st, make 1 stem, 2 sc in next st, *[sc, stem, sc] in next st, 2 sc in next st, stem, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, sl st in first sc. (38 sts, 12 stems made)

Flower 2

Rnd 1: Rep Rnd 1 as for Flower 1, changing colors by referring to number stated above.

Rnd 2 (Joining Rnd): Ch 1 (not counted as st), sc in first st, make joining stem, sc in same st on Flower 2, 2 sc in next st, make joining stem to Flower 1, above joining stem just made (i.e. in a clockwise motion), 2 sc in next st, *[sc, stem, sc] in next st, 2 sc in next st, stem, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, sl st in first sc. (38 sts, 12 stems made, 2 stems joined)

Flower 3

Complete as for Flower 2, joining 2 stems at opposite side of flower; there will be 4 free stems at top of flower and 4 free stems at bottom of each join.

Continue until all 20 flowers have been joined in a Row.

Row 2

Flower Colors – 18 flowers in row. The center color is stated first, followed by the outer petal/stem color:

Flower 1

Rnd 1: Rep Rnd 1 as for Flower 1, changing colors by referring to colors stated above.

Rnd 2: Sk first flower on Rnd 1, leaving stem free from previous joining point (i.e. looking at motif as a clockface), flowers on Row 1 are joined at numbers 2 & 3 to 8 & 9. The 2 new stems will be joined at numbers 5 & 6.

Flower 2

Rnd 1: Rep Rnd 1 as for Flower 1, changing colors by referring to colors stated above.

Rnd 2: Join to flower on right to stems 8 & 9, make stem and leave free, and then join following stems to Row 1 at stems 5 & 6.

Flowers 3-18

Complete as for Flower 2, joining to stems of flower just worked, leaving stem free between join and then to flower on Row 1.

Row 3

Flower Colors – 18 flowers in row. The center color is stated first, followed by the outer petal/stem color:

Turn scarf so that RS and top of Row 1 is facing, join Row 3 motifs to Row 1, repeating instructions for Row 2.

Star Flowers

Make 38 flowers in the following colors:

101      385      263      403      252      146      513      392      386      101      146      409            280

113      172      513      397      114      392      280      252      179      513      263      264

Joining Star flowers to 4 corner motifs:

With appropriate color, make a Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1 (not counted as st), 12 sc in ring, sl st in first st.

Rnd 2 (Joining Rnd): Ch 1 (not counted as st), sc in first st, [2 ch, join with sl st in first free stem of flower (working in an anti-clockwise motion), 2 ch, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, ch 4, sc in next st, sl st in first st in rnd. Fasten off.

Joining Star flower to 4 stems as follows:

Make a Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1 (not counted as st), 12 sc in ring, sl st in first st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (not counted as st), sc in first st, [ch 2, join with sl st in first free stem of flower (working in an anti-clockwise motion), ch 2, 2 sc in next st] 4 times, sc in next st, sl st in first st in rnd. Fasten off.

Border

With RS of scarf facing and A, sl st in ch-4 sp of first Star flower on Row 3.

Foundation Row: Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3), *dc in first stem of next flower, [ch 3, sc in next stem] 4 times, ch 3, dc in next stem, [ch 3, dc in stem of next circle, (ch 3, sc in next stem) 2 times, ch 3, dc in next stem] 16 times, ch 3, dc in next stem, [ch 3, sc in next stem] 4 times, ch 3, dc in next stem, ch 3, dc in star, ch 3, dc in stem of next flower, [ch 3, sc in next stem] 6 times, ch 3 **, dc in next stem, ch 3, dc in star, ch 3; rep from * to ** once, sl st in 3rd ch at beg rnd. (688 sts)

Rnd 1: Ch 1 (counts as first st), sl st evenly in outer loop of each st and ch st in rnd.

Rnd 2: Join B with sl st, ch 1 (not counted as st), sc in outer loop of each st along to the centre sts of Flower 20 Row 1, work (sc, dc) in outer loop only, make ch 1 to attach tassel, (dc, sc) in outer loop of next st, sc in the outer loop of each st along to Flower 1 Row 1, (sc dc) in outer loop of next st, make ch 1 to attach 2nd tassel, (dc, sc) in next st, sc to end, sl st in first st in rnd. Fasten off.

Tassel (Make 2)

Cut a piece of card 12 cm wide, wrap A around the card approximately 50 times. Fasten off.

Use piece of B approx. 10 cm to tie a knot tightly at the top enclosing all wraps.

Cut through bottom of wraps and carefully remove from card.

Holding a 3 cm loop of B 3cm from top knot wrap around tassel and loop tightly 10 times. Cut end and feed through loop and pull down tightly securing wrap. Trim ends of wrap.

Straighten and trim ends of tassel to neaten.

Feed ends of knot through ch-1 sp of Flower 1 at end of scarf, tie, and secure.

Repeat tassel and tie at Flower 20.

Finishing

Finish and neaten all ends.

Steam block work.

    It seems like 22 balls is more than you need to purchase to make this scarf. If I were to use just a nice mixture of my own colors, would it be possible to make with fewer balls? Do you know how many total yards needed? Thank you!

      For the Patchwork Posies scarf about 25 – 50gr in the main border colors, then a mixture of colors could be used for the flowers, I’m not sure exactly how many meters was used of each color but the full scarf weighs 188gr. It would be possible to do the scarf in one or more colors of choice and even small scraps can be used for the joining flowers! Hope this helps. – Nicola, Editor
