Paola Poncho

Featuring an open front for an easy, effortless style, this poncho is just what you need before the weather starts to cool. Worked lengthwise with three different shades of worsted weight yarn, the color combinations are endless. Whether you are cozying up on the couch with a good book or are out for a stroll on a cool summer’s evening, this poncho is what you’ll reach for.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 64″ long from hem to hem x 44″ wide

Gauge: 5 sts and 7 rows = 4″ [10cm] in Xdc after wet blocking.

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Berroco Vintage (52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon; 217 yards [198 meters]/100 grams): 5189 Charcoal (MC, 10 skeins), 5127 Butternut (CC1, 2 skeins), 5101 Mochi (CC2, 2 skeins)

Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm)

Notions: Removable markers, tapestry needle

Row Below: The row below the regular row you would work into.

Special Stitches

Xdc: Sk 1 st, dc in next 2 st, dc in sk st working in front of the 2 dc.

Vst: (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated st.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked widthwise from one long edge to the other. Once the poncho is finished a sc edge is worked around all edges.

Turn at the end of every row unless indicated otherwise.

Ch 2 counts as the first hdc.

Ch 3 counts as the first dc.

To change yarn color, fasten off current yarn, pick up next yarn color and join it to the top of the last st or tch with a sl st, carrying the unused yarn colors loosely up the sides of the work.

The striped section is worked with one color at a time. The Vst is worked in front of the previous rows Vst and into the ch-sp of the Vst from the row below. The legs of the new Vst should sit between the legs of the Vst from the previous row. For example, the Vst for row 7 (MC) is worked into the ch-sp of the Vst from Row 5 (CC1) and sits inside the legs of the Vst from Row 6 (CC2).

Pattern

First Half of Poncho

**With MC, ch 225.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end. (224 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3, Xdc across to last sc, dc in last sc. (74 Xdc)

Row 3: Ch 3, Xdc in each Xdc across to tch, dc in tch.

Rows 4-21: Rep Row 3.

Fasten off.

Striped Section

Row 1: Join CC1 with sl st to last dc, ch 1, sc in each dc across to tch, sc in tch, turn. (224 sc)

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), sk first sc, hdc in each sc across to end, turn. (224 hdc)

Row 3: Join CC2 with sl st to last hdc, ch 2, sk 1 hdc, [Vst in next hdc, sk 2 hdc] 73 times, Vst in next hdc, sk 1 hdc, hdc in tch, do not turn. (74 Vst)

Row 4: Using MC, ch 2 in tch from Row 3, working in front of Vst from Row 3, Vst in same hdc as Row 3 across to tch, hdc in tch, do not turn.

Row 5: Using CC1, ch 2, working in front of Vst from previous row, Vst in ch-1 sp of Vst from row below across to tch, hdc in tch, turn.

Row 6: Using CC2, ch 2, working behind Vst from previous row, Vst in ch-1 sp of Vst from row below across to tch, hdc in tch, do not turn.

Row 7: Using MC, ch 2, working behind Vst from previous row, Vst in ch-1 sp of Vst from row below across to tch, hdc in tch, do not turn.

Row 8: Using CC1, ch 2, working behind Vst from previous row, Vst in ch-1 sp of Vst from row below across to tch, hdc in tch, turn.

Row 9: Using CC2, ch 2, working in front of Vst from previous row, Vst in ch-1 sp of Vst from row below across to tch, hdc in tch, do not turn.

Row 10: Using MC, ch 2, working in front of Vst from previous row, Vst in ch-1 sp of Vst from row below across to tch, hdc in tch, do not turn.

Rows 11-18: Rep Rows 5-10, once, then Rows 5-6 once more, do not turn.

Row 19: Using CC1, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), sk first hdc, [hdc in dc, hdc in ch-1 sp, hdc in dc] 74 times, hdc in tch. (224 hdc)

Row 20: Ch 1, sc in each hdc across to tch, sc in tch.

Break CC1 and CC2.

Center Section

Row 1: Join MC to last sc, ch 1, sc in each sc across to end, turn. (224 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3, Xdc across to last sc, dc in last sc, turn. (74 Xdc)

Row 3: Ch 3, Xdc in each Xdc across to tch, dc in tch, turn.

Rows 4-7: Rep Row 3.**

Row 8: Ch 3, Xdc in next 37 Xdc, dc in next dc, turn.

Row 9: Ch 3, Xdc in next 37 Xdc, dc in tch, turn.

Row 10: Rep Row 9.

Fasten off. Break MC.

Second Half of Poncho

Rep from ** to ** for Second Half of Poncho.

Fasten off. Break MC.

Row 8: With RS facing, sk 36 Xdc, join MC to 3rd dc of the 37th Xdc with sl st, ch 3, Xdc in next 37 Xdc, dc in tch.

Row 9: Ch 3, Xdc in next 37 Xdc, dc in tch.

Row 10: Rep Row 9.

Fasten off.

Break MC leaving a 40″ tail.

Finishing

Join two halves of poncho together along center back using mattress st.

Border

Rnd 1: Join MC to RS bottom back edge with a sl st, ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around all edges of poncho, working 3 sc in each outside corner, join with sl st in first sc, turn.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc, working 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st to first sc, turn.

Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2.

Fasten off. Break yarn.

Weave in ends.
