Bewitching Hat

Crochet a perfectly spooky witch hat this Halloween for your favorite trick-or-treater. This easy pattern lets you work up a pointy and positively bewitching hat, complete with grey braids. Designed by Michele Wilcox.

Skill Level: Easy 

Size: 20” in circumference; 14” tall

Gauge: 5 sc = 1 1/2”; 5 rounds sc = 1 1/2”

Materials

Yarn:

Medium weight yarn Red Heart Super Saver (100% acrylic; 364 yards [333 meters]/198 grams): #312 Black (A, 1 skein), #400 Grey Heather (B, 1 skein), #356 Amethyst (C, 1 skein)

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook
Notions: Yarn needle

Pattern

Starting at top of hat with A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook do not join. Work in a spiral, marking beginning of each round, moving marker up as work progresses. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 3: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (8 sc)
Rnd 4: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (10 sc)
Rnd 5: *Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (12 sc)
Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 7: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (15 sc)
Rnds 8-9: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 10: *Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (18 sc)
Rnds 11-12: sc in each sc around.
Rnd 13: *Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (21 sc)
Rnds 14-15: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 16: *Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (24 sc)
Rnds 17-18: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 19: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (30 sc)
Rnd 20: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 21: *Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (36 sc)
Rnd 22: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 23: *Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (42 sc)
Rnd 24: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 25: *Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (48 sc)
Rnd 26: Sc in each sc around. (48 sc)
Rnd 27: *Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (54 sc)
Rnd 28: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 29: *Sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (60 sc)
Rnd 30: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 31: *Sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (66 sc)
Rnds 32-39: Sc in each sc around. Complete last sc with C, drop A to wrong side
Rnds 40-43: With C, sc in each sc around. Complete last sc with A. Fasten off C.
Rnd 44: With A, sc in each sc around.
Rnd 45: Working this round in flps only, slip st in first sc, ch 3, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each sc around, join with slip st in top of beginning ch 3.
Rnd 46: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each dc around. Fasten off.

Braids (Make Two)

Wrap grey around an 8” cardboard 65 times. Cut one end. Tie center of strands tightly together. Braid to desired length.  Tie at the bottom of braid. Trim. Sew each side of hat just under brim. yarn ball

    LOVE THIS- GOING TO TRY MY HAND AT IT!… DON’T DO MUCH CROCHETING ANYMORE- AT 71, MY HANDS HURT WHEN I TRY AND MAKE ANYTHING TOO BIG!… THIS LOOKS LIKE I COULD HANDLE IT!… 😉
