Decadent Cookie Garland

Frosted cookies, candy canes and star cookies make up this whimsical and unique Christmas garland. Using simple amigurimi techniques, you’ll have a special decoration that will last year after year!

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Frosted Cookie = 4” diameter; Star = 4” across; Candy Cane = 3 ½” tall; Chain length = 60”

Gauge: Gauge is not necessary for this project

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Caron Simply Soft (100% acrylic; 315 yards [288 meters]/170 grams):  #B9604 Watermelon (1 skein), #750 Chocolate (1 skein), #703 Bone (1 skein), #782 Gold (1 skein), #729 Red (1 skein), #701 White (1 skein), #770 Cool Green (1 skein)
Hook: US size G/6 (4.0 mm) and H/8 (5.0 mm) hooks
Notions: Stitch markers, yarn needle, sewing needle, small amount of yellow felt and yellow sewing thread, 2 – 12” white pipe cleaners with ¼” of ends folded over, small amount of fiberfil, 3 – 12” lengths of ½” red ribbon and red sewing thread, 8 acrylic pom-poms – 4 (1 ½ ” diameter) and 4 (2” diameter)

Special Stitches

Beg. CL: Ch 3, [YO 2x, insert hk into same st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps) 2x] 2x; YO, pull through all lps on hk.
CL: [YO 2x, insert hk into same st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps) 2x] 3x; YO, pull through all lps on hk.

Pattern Notes

Each element is crocheted and completed first and then sewn to a triple-stranded chain length.
Larger hook is only used for chain length – use smaller hook for all other elements.
When working Frosted Cookie, mark the beg. of each round with a stitch marker. Do not join each round (Rnds 1-5) with a sl st – work in spiral.

Frosted Cookie Pattern

Front

(Make Three: Two Watermelon and One Chocolate)

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in an adjustable ring.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: Working in the front loops only, (sl st in next st, 5 dc in next st, sl st in next st) around. (8 petals/scallops)
Fasten off.
Rnd 6:  With Bone join with hdc in any unused back loop from Rnd 5; *ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st) around; join with sl st to starting ch-2.*
Rnd 7:  Ch 2, hdc in next st and in each st around; join with sl st to starting ch-2.
Rnd 8:  Ch 2, hdc in same st; (hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st) around; Fasten off.

Back (Make Three)

With Bone and smaller hook work as for Rounds 1-4 for FRONT of cookie.
Rnd 5:  Work as for * to * in Round 6 of FRONT of cookie.
Rnds 6 and 7: Work as for Rounds 7 and 8 of FRONT of cookie.

Finishing/Assembly

Using a small amount of all colors used in project, embroider small stitches (for sprinkles) on Chocolate Frosting Cookie.
Holding wrong sides facing of one FRONT piece and one BACK piece, sc through both loops of last round of each piece; When only about 10 sts left unworked, stuff cookie with small amount of fiberfil; Finish sc in remaining sts and join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.

Star Cookie Pattern (Make Two)

With gold ch 5; join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Beg. CL, (ch 3, CL) 4x; ch 3, join with sl st to top of 1st CL. (5 CLs)
Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in top of CL, ch 3, 3 dc in same st; sc in next ch-3 sp; *(3 dc, ch 3, 3dc) in next CL, sc in next ch-3 sp *; Rep. from * to * 3 more times; join with sl st to beg. ch-3.
Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 sts and in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, sc in next sc, ch 1; *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in next sc , ch 1*; Repeat from * to * 3 more times; join with sl st to 1st st.
Rnd 4: Sc in same st as sl st, sc in next 2 sts, *(sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-2 sp, sc in next 3 sts, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 3 sts * Rep. from * to * around; join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off.

Finishing

Trace star shape onto yellow felt and cut out. Using matching sewing thread and sewing needle, attach felt to back of star shape. Trim excess felt so does not show on front.

Candy Cane Pattern (Make Two)

With White ch 52.
Row 1: Working in the back bar of the ch, hdc in 3rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Fasten off. Turn.
Row 2: Join Red with sl st in 1st st, ch 2, hdc in next st and in each st across.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly.

Finishing

Wrap white and red length around pencil; Using yarn needle and red yarn tail, sew edge of red row to edge of white row so piece creates a tube of red and white twisted together; Fold pipe cleaner in half and insert into tube.  Bend tube to form candy cane shape and sew up both ends.
Chain length for hanging: With a triple strand of green, ch 20, sl st in 20th ch from hk; ch 120, sl st in 20th ch from hk. Fasten off.

Assembly

Using photo as a guide layout all pieces along chain length (with RS facing) starting with Chocolate Frosted Cookie in the center; Pin all large pieces in place and then layout all pom-poms in between.
Using yarn needle and green yarn, attach pom-poms to chain length – push needle through center of pom-pom, thread ends through chain length and tie into double knot; weave ends into chain length.
Attach large pieces using yarn needle and color that matches piece.
Tie 3 lengths of ribbon into bows and sew on to chain length above each Frosted Cookie using sewing needle and red thread. yarn ball
