Skylark Fringe Poncho

Skylark is an oversized poncho made as a tribute to nature taking us through the hot summer weather to the cozy fall days ahead. Featuring the rich texture of popcorn bobbles and the wheat-resembling moss stitch, this poncho will have you feeling like a fall queen. With simple two-panel construction, different textures and a fun fringe, Skylark is the perfect project for an intermediate level crocheter.

Abbreviations

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

FPsc – front post single crochet

hdc in 3rd loop – half double crochet in third loop only

pc – popcorn stitch

sk – skip

pm – place marker

yo – yarn over

[ ] or ( ) – work instructions within brackets as many times as directed

Special Stitches

Popcorn Stitch – work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch. Drop the loop from your hook, insert hook from back to front in the first double crochet of the group, place the dropped loop on hook and pull through the stitch.

Hdc in 3rd loop – yarn over and insert hook under third loop of the stitch (lower horizontal bar in front of you) you are working into, yarn over and finish the stitch as you usually would, pulling through all 3 loops on hook.

FPsc – insert the hook from front to back to front around post of sc, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook.

Moss Stitch –Row 1: starting in first st [sc in next st, ch 1, sk 1] across to last 2 sts, sc in each of last 2 sts. Row 2 and each successive row: Sc in first sc, ch 1, sk 1, [sc in ch-sp, ch 1, sk 1] across, working sc in last ch-sp and sc.

Pattern Notes

This garment is worked in two panels, seamed together with side ribbing and turtle neck added.

The front and back panel are worked from the bottom up, back and forth in rows starting from the hdc in 3rd loop ribbing. Side ribbing is worked after joining the front and back panels.

The side seam is made along the side ribbing.

Left and right sides refer to how the garment is worn on the body.

When working your first sc row across the ribbing, I suggest placing approximately 3 sc per 2 hdc sts.

Optional: when working the front panel, place stitch markers at the last stitch of each section (marked in the pattern as (pm) and in the chart with colors) starting with Row 6, to set up the stitch pattern easier. Move your markers up as you go as long as you need it. When working odd number rows (on right side of your work), your markers will be in the first stitch of the section.

Back Panel has 4 rows more than the Front to compensate for the fabric’s tendency of the Front Panel to lean forward.

I recommend blocking the panels before doing the shoulder seam.

Shoulder Seam

With wrong side facing you (right side facing each other), align front and back panels and sl st to join through outer loops (front loop of the stitch closer to you and back loop of the stitch furthest from you) along the shoulder line to join, leaving 8.5 (9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10.5, 11, 11)” unworked for the neck opening in the middle.

Fasten off.

Turtle Neck

Join yarn at neck opening (at the seam).

Ch 11

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 9 ch, sl st in next 2 sts of the body (10 hdc, 2 sl st).

Row 2: Turn (without chaining), sk 2 sl sts, hdc in 3rd loop in each of 10 sts (10 hdc in 3rd loop).

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, hdc in 3rd loop in each of 10 sts, sl st in next 3 sts of the body (10 hdc in 3rd loop, 3 sl st).

Side Ribbing

With right side facing, join yarn at the bottom right corner of the back.

Ch 13.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 11 ch, sl st in next 2 sts of the body (12 hdc, 2 sl st).

Row 2: Turn (without chaining), sk 2 sl sts, hdc in 3rd loop in each of 12 sts (12 hdc in 3rd loop).

With wrong side facing each other, align front and back panels and pm approximately 9 (10, 10, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11)“ / 23 (25, 25, 28, 28, 28, 28, 28) cm down from the shoulder seams on the side ribbings. Sew along the side seams about 8” / 20 cm in length. Cut the yarn.

Fringe

Cut around 400 pieces (for each ch-2 space) of fringe, each measuring approximately 11”.

Attach a piece of fringe around each ch-2 space.
