Lemon Meringue Pullover

This comfortable pullover features a unique textured stitch, wide horizontal stripes, and a ribbed button detail at the shoulder seam. Using a softer yellow and a cream colored yarn, the stripes are still bold but definitely more subtle and casual.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Bust Size 37 (41, 45, 49, 53)” to fit bust 34 (38, 42, 46, 50)”

3” positive ease recommended.

Gauge: 18 sts and 18 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern st with larger hook

Materials

Yarn: Berroco Ultra Wool (100% Superwash Wool; 219 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): #3312 Butter (MC, 4 (5, 5, 6, 6) balls), #3301 Cream (CC, 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) balls

Hook: US size H/8 (5.0mm); K/10.5 (6.5mm)

Notions: Three ½” buttons, tapestry needle, sewing needle, matching thread

Blo: Back loop only.

Flo: Front loop only.

Pattern Stitch (worked over an odd number of sts)

Row 1: *Sc flo, sc blo; rep from *, ending with sc flo.

Rows 1-10: CC

Rows 11-20: MC

When increasing or decreasing be sure to work in pattern stitch as established. You will see a horizontal bar two rows below where are you are working for every stitch that should be flo.

Change to larger hook.

Body

Cont across long side of Ribbing, working Stripe Pattern for Front and Back.

Neck Shaping

Decrease at neck edge every row 7 (12, 13, 16, 17) more times. (17 (17, 19, 19, 21) sts)

Work even in established Pattern Stitch for 5 (0, 3, 0, 0) rows.

Button Tab

With smaller hook and MC, ch 5.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch, sc2tog next ch and next st of Body. (4 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc blo in each st across.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc blo in first 3 sts, sc2tog blo of next st of rib and next st of Body.

Rep Rows 2-3 across shoulder seam.

Fasten off.

Skip center 13 (13, 15, 15, 17) sts and join yarn, ch 1, work in Pattern Stitch to end. (24 (29, 32, 35, 38) sts)

Decrease at neck edge every row 7 (12, 13, 16, 17) more times. (17 (17, 19, 19, 21) sts)

Begin working Stripe Pattern for Sleeve.

**Rep Row 2 until Ribbing meas 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10.5)”, ending with a WS row. Do not turn at end of last row.

Wet block all pieces.

Stitch Front to Back at shoulder seams.

Collar

With smaller hook and MC, join yarn with sl st at right shoulder seam.

Rep Ribbing for button tab across neck edge. Sew seam in Ribbing.

Sew buttons on button tab.

Sew Sleeves and side seams.

Weave in ends.

  • I am confused by the tab instructions. Is this supposed to be a working tab where you can unfasten it when putting it on, or is it only for decoration? Do you sew the shoulder seam at the outer edge of the tab (for decoration only) or sew the shoulder seam at the base of the tab on one side?

  • I’m making this sweater and am now beginning the sleeves. I think the directions are misleading….
    when you say repeat row 2….should it say repeat row 3?
