Varley Striped Cowl

Varley is a unique cowl that highlights striped yarn in an interesting way. The solid yarn breaks up the colors of the striped yarn in textured stitches and alternating rows. Quick to make and easy to wear.

Time: 2 Hour Pattern

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 5.5″ tall x 24″ circumference

Gauge: 12 sts and 18 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in pattern

Materials

Yarn: Lion Brand Landscapes (100% acrylic; 147 yards [134 meters]\100 grams): #150 Silver (A, 1 ball), #204 Desert Spring (B, 1 ball)

Hook: US size I/9  (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Yarn needle

Abbreviations

rsc – reverse single crochet

Special Stitches

Front post double crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert hook from right to left behind post of designated st, yo, pull up lp, [yo, pull through 2 lps] twice.

Change color: Work with current color to last yo of current st, with new color, complete st.

Pattern Notes

Join with a sl st unless otherwise indicated.

Pattern

With A, ch 72, sl st in first ch to form a ring being careful not to twist ch.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each bottom bump of ch, change to B, join, turn. (72 sc)

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc around, join, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc around, change to A, join, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, *fpdc around next 2 sc 2 rows below, sk the 2 sc behind fpdc on this row, sc in next 2 sc; rep from * to end, join, turn. (36 fpdc, 36 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc and fpdc around, change to B, join, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, *fpdc around next 2 fpdc 2 rows below, sk 2 sc behind fpdc on this row, sc in next 2 sc; rep from *, join, turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each sc and fpdc, change to A, join, turn.

Rows 8-23: Rep Rows 6-7 seven times.

Row 24: Ch 1, rsc in each st to end, join. (76 rsc)

Fasten off.

Opposite edge

Attach yarn to any st with a sl st. ch 1, rsc in each st to end, join. Fasten off.
