Olympus Scarf

Mount Olympus in Utah is covered in green forests at its base, giving it a striking appearance. Inspired by this very landscape, the equally-green scarf boasts intertwining cables that provide an intriguing texture.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizes: 71.75” / [182 cm] length x 9.5” / [24 cm] width

Gauge: 11 sts = 4″ / [10 cm] and 4 rows = 2.25″ / [5.5 cm] in hdc-blo.

Yarn Quince & Co. Osprey (100% American Wool; 170 yards [155 meters]/100 grams: #141 Wasabi, 3 skeins

Hook: US size M/13 (9 mm)

Cable Panel

Set-up Row 1 (RS): Sk 1 ch, sc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, sc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 sc, turn. (9 sts)

Set-up Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in next 9 sts.

Set-up Row 3: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, sk 2 dc and 1 sc 2 rows below, FPtr around next 2 dc, sc in next sc in previous row (see Notes), FPtr around the first skipped dc then FPdc around the second skipped dc 2 rows below, sc in next 2 sc in previous row, turn.

Set-up Row 4: Rep Set-up Row 2.

Rows 1 and 3 (RS): Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, FPdc in next 2 FPtr or FPdc 2 rows below, sc in next sc (see Notes), FPdc in next 2 FPtr or FPdc 2 rows below, sc in last 2 sc, turn.

Rows 2 and 4 (WS): Ch 1, sc in next 9 sts, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, sk 2 FPdc and 1 sc 2 rows below, FPtr around next 2 FPdc, sc in next sc in previous row (see Notes), FPtr around the first skipped FPdc then FPdc around the second skipped FPdc, sc in next 2 sc, turn.

Pattern Notes

When working the Cable Panel, the FPdc and FPtr sts are worked around the sts from the previous RS row (2 rows below). All sc sts are worked into the sc from the previous WS row. So, when working the sc that is between the 2 sets of FPdc or FPtr sts, look at the back of the work, sk 2 of the sc from the previous WS row, then work the center sc into the next sc. The final 2 sc sts of each RS row may be located using the same method.

Pattern

Center Cable

Ch 10, turn.

Work Set-up Rows 1–4 of Cable Panel, then rep Rows 1–6 of Cable Panel 32 times. Work Row 1 once more. Fasten off.

First Side Ribbing

With WS facing, join yarn with sl st to work along one selvedge edge of the cable panel.

Set-up Row (WS): Ch 2, hdc in end of each row of Cable Panel, turn. (197 hdc)

Row 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), hdc in blo of each hdc to end, turn.

Rep the last row 4 more times, ending after a WS row.

Fasten off.

Second Side Ribbing

Work same as First Side Ribbing. Do not fasten off.

Edging

Turn so RS is facing, work 3 sc in blo of first hdc, sc in blo of each hdc to last hdc, work 3 sc in blo of last hdc, rotate work 90º and work sc along each row of the Side Ribbing, sc in each Cable Panel sts, then sc along each row of the Side Ribbing, rotate work 90º, work 3 sc in blo of first hdc, then sc in blo of each hdc to last hdc, work 3 sc in blo of last hdc, rotate work 90º, work sc along each row of the Side Ribbing, sc in each Cable Panel sts, then sc along each row of the Side Ribbing to end, sl st into first sc to join. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block to measurements
