Vintage Swirls & Squares Shawl

Introducing the mesmerizing Vintage Swirls & Squares Shawl , a triangular masterpiece that seamlessly blends two distinct square motifs: the timeless granny square and a captivating spiral design. This shawl showcases an intriguing combination of these interchangeable motifs, united with a beautifully intricate and lacy join.

Size: 77.5” (197 cm) wingspan x 39.5” (100 cm) depth.

Gauge: Each square motif measures 4” (10 cm), before the final round.

MATERIALS

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Scheepjes Catona (100% Cotton; 137 yards [125 meters] / 50 grams): 247 Bluebird (MC, 6    balls), 280 Lemon (CC1, 2 balls), 412 Forest Green (CC2, 2 balls), 383 Ginger Gold (CC3, 2 balls), 413 Cherry (CC4, 2 balls).

Hook: US size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, locking stitch markers (optional).

PATTERN NOTES

The shawl consists of 45 motifs (16 granny squares, 20 spiral squares and 9 granny triangles).

Each round of the granny squares and triangles is worked in a different color, with the right side always facing.

Each round of the spiral squares is worked with all 4 colors. Each of the colors is worked separately, while the others are waiting with the last loop secure in a stitch marker.

At the beginning of each round, the first ch 3 are counted as 1 dc. You can replace the ch 3 with a standing double crochet or a stacked double crochet.

PATTERN

Granny Square – Motif A (Make 16)

With the first color, ch 4, join with sl st in the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2 here and throughout), 3 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) twice, ch 2, 2 dc in ring, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off.

Round 2: Join 2nd color in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same sp, *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, ch 1, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off.

Round 3: Join 3rd color in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, ch 1, 3 dc in last ch-1 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off.

Round 4: Join 4th color in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same sp, *(ch 1, 3 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the next ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * twice more, (ch 1, 3 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the next corner, ch 1, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off.

Round 5: Join MC in any corner ch-2 sp and repeat Round 4 instructions. Do not fasten off.

Round 6: Continue with MC. Sl st in the ch-2 corner, ch 6 (counts as 1 dc and ch 3), (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in same sp, *(1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the next ch-2 sp, [(1 dc, ch 3) 3 times, 1 dc] in next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the next corner, 1 dc, ch 3 in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Spiral Square – Motif B (Make 20)

With the first color, ch 4, join with sl st in the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 4, 3 dc in ring, remove the hook from the loop (optional: place a locking stitch marker on the loop to keep it secure), *join the next color in the ring ch 4, 3 dc in ring, remove the hook; rep from * twice more.

Round 2: *Insert your hook back at the next color loop. Ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next color’s ch-4 sp, remove the hook from the loop; rep from * thrice more.

Round 3: *Insert your hook back at the next color loop. Ch 1, 3 dc in the next color’s ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 sp, remove the hook from the loop; rep from * thrice more.

Round 4: *Insert your hook back at the next color loop. (ch 1, 3 dc) in each of the next color’s ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 sp, remove the hook from the loop; rep from * thrice more.

Round 5: *Insert your hook back at the next color loop. (ch 1, 3 dc) in each of the next color’s ch-1 sp, ch 1, 1 dc in the ch-2 sp. Fasten off; rep from * thrice more.

Round 6: Join MC in any corner. Ch 1, *4 sc in the corner sp, 1 sc in the next color’s ch-2 sp, (1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc in the ch-1 sp) 3 times, 1 sc in the next 3 sts; rep from * thrice more, join with sl st in the first st. Do not fasten off. (80 sts at the end of this round).

Round 7: Continue with MC. Ch 6 (counts as 1 dc and ch 3), (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in same st, *[skip the next 3 sts, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in the next st] 4 times, skip the next 3 sts, [(1 dc, ch 3) 3 times, 1 dc] in the next st; repeat from * twice more, [skip the next 3 sts, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in the next st] 4 times, skip the next 3 sts, (1 dc, ch 3) in the first st, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Granny Triangle – Motif C (Make 9)

With the first color, ch 4, join with sl st in the first ch to form a ring.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1 here and throughout), (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in ring. Fasten off.

Row 2: Join 2nd color in the 3rd ch of beg ch, ch 4, 3 dc in the ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 1 dc in the last dc. Fasten off.

Row 3: Join 3nd color in the 3rd ch of beg ch, ch 4, (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp across to the next ch-2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to last dc, ch 1, 1 dc in the last dc. Fasten off.

Row 4: Join 4th color in the 3rd ch of beg ch and repeat Round 3 instructions. Fasten off.

Work the rest of the triangle in rounds

Round 1: Join MC in the 3rd ch of beg ch, ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2 here and throughout), 3 dc in the ch-1 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the ch-2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the last ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the last ch-1 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc) in each dc sp across the long side of the triangle to the first dc, ch 1, 2 dc in the first dc sp, join with a sl st in the 3rd ch of beg ch. Do not fasten off.

Round 2: Continue with MC. Sl st in the ch-2 sp corner, ch 6 (counts as 1 dc and ch 3), (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in same sp, *(1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the next ch-2 sp, [(1 dc, ch 3) 3 times, 1 dc] in next ch-2 sp; rep from * once more, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in each ch-1 sp across to the first corner, 1 dc, ch 3 in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch. Assembly

Arrange the motifs as shown in the shawl diagram, assuring all are facing the right side.

Follow the diagram map for joining the motifs as you go, starting with motif 1.

Row 1: Join MC into the bottom ch-3 sp corner of the 1st motif.
