Fine weight yarnYarn: Berroco Ultra® Wool Fine 100% Superwash Wool; 400 yards [366 meters] / 3.5 ounces [100 grams]): 53139 Verbena (MC 2 (2, 3, 3, 4) balls), 5301 Cream (CC 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) balls)

Hook: US size E-4 3.5 mm

Notions: tapestry needle, two 1” buttons, sewing needle and matching thread

Special Stitches

2-tr cluster: Yo twice, insert hook into the desired sp, yo, pull through lp, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] twice, yo twice, insert hook into the same sp, yo, pull through lp, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] twice, yo, pull through all 3 lps on hook.

Ch 4 at the beginning of row counts as dc, ch 1.

Pattern

Motif 1

With MC, ch 5. Make a ring with a sl st into the first ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 4, tr in ring, ch 3, (2-tr cluster in ring, ch 3) 6 times, 2-tr cluster in ring, ch 1, tr into the 4th ch (counts as ch-3 sp). (8 2-tr clusters, 8 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 2: (Ch 7, sl st into next ch-3 sp, ch 5, sl st into next ch-3 sp) 3 times, ch 7, sl st into next ch-3 sp, ch 2, dc into last ch-3 sp (counts as ch-5 sp). (4 ch-7 sps, 4 ch-5 sps)

Rnd 3: Attach CC to the last ch-5, ([tr, ch 1] 10 times in next ch-7 sp, tr in same ch-7 sp, sc in next ch-5 sp]) 4 times.

Rnd 4: With MC, ch 5, * [tr in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 4 times, tr in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, [tr in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 5 times, tr in next sc, ch 1; rep from * around, end with sl st into the 4th ch. Fasten off MC.

Rnd 5: With CC, * [sc in next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, sc in next tr, [2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc] in next ch-5 sp, [sc in next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, ch 3, sk next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, end with ch 3, sl st into the first sc. Fasten off.

Motif 2 and all other motifs

Work same as motif 1 to rnd 5.

Rnd 5: With CC, * [sc in next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, sc in next tr, 2 sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 1, sl st into the corresponding ch 3-sp on previous motif, ch 1, 2 sc in same ch-5 sp, [sc in next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, ch 1, sl st into the corresponding ch 3-sp on previous motif, ch 1, sk next tr, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * on all joining sides, otherwise follow instructions of rnd 5 of motif 1. Fasten off.

Instruction

Follow instruction for motif 1 then for the rest of the motifs follow instructions for motif 2. For joining motifs, check diagram.

Side Panel (make 4)

Row 1: Starting from bottom edge attach MC to ch-3 sp of the first motif, ch 4, dc in next sc, ([ch 1, sk next sc, dc in next sc] 14 times, ch 1, dc in next ch-3 sp) 4 times, turn.

Row 2: Ch 4, * dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * across, end with dc in 3rd ch, turn.

Rep row 2 another 2 (5, 7, 9, 12) more times for respective sizes. Fasten off.

Attach side panel to each side of front and back.

Front edge Panel (make 2)

Row 1: Starting from bottom edge attach MC to ch-3 sp of the first motif ch 4, dc in next sc, ([ch 1, sk next sc, dc in next sc] 14 times, ch 1, dc in next ch-3 sp) 4 times, [dc in next sc, sk next sc, ch 1] 6 times, sk next sc, hdc in next sc, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, * dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * across, end with dc in 3rd ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 4, dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * across to dc before ch 3, end with hdc in 3rd ch, turn.

Rows 4-8: Rep rows 2-3. Fasten off.

Sleeve Panel (make 2)

Row 1: Starting from edge of the sleeve attach MC to ch-3 sp of the first motif ch 4, dc in next sc, ([ch 1, sk next sc, dc in next sc] 14 times, ch 1, dc in next ch-3 sp) twice, sk next ch-2 sp or 2 sc on the corresponding body panel, sl st into next sc, turn.

Row 2: Ch 4, * dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * across, end with dc in 3rd ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 4, * dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * across, dc in the 3rd ch, sk next 2 sc on the corresponding body panel, sl st into next sc on body motif, turn.

Rows 4-14: Rep rows 2-3.

Finishing

Sew side seams leaving 5” at the bottom edge without sewing together. Sew sleeve seams.

Sleeve Finishing

Rnd 1: Attach CC to the edge of the seam. Sc in every sc around.

Rnd 2: Reverse sc in every sc around. Fasten off.

Bottom Edge Finishing

Row 1: Attach CC to the front edge of the left front, 2 sc in the side dc or ch-3 sp, on the motifs, sc in every sc along the edge.

Row 2: Reverse sc in every sc across. Fasten off.

Front Edge Finishing

Row 1: Attach CC to the edge of the right front, 2 sc in the side dc or ch-3 sp, on the motifs, sc in every sc along the right front edge, back neck and left front edge.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in every sc until you get to the edge of right front V-neck, ch 5, sk next 3 sc, sc in next 10 sc, ch 5, sk next 3 sc, sc to the bottom edge. (Two buttonholes made)

Row 3: Reverse sc in every sc and every ch across. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.  Block cardigan to size. Sew buttons across from buttonholes.
